Clara was the first of her kind; the star that truly embodied her era. It is a double edged sword because it makes you frozen in time forever but it can destroy your career once the times change. (John Travolta after 1979 and before his comeback in the 90's is a good example of this type of typecasting.) Clara quit acting before she could become a relic which makes her even more timeless now.
@gryphon50c If I recall, she said in her biography that when she told her mother she wanted to be an actress, her mother tried to cut her throat when she was sleeping. Makes you wonder what the hell was going on there.
@gryphon50c Clara's mother was clinically insane. Throughout Clara's life, she was so afraid that she would be considered insane herself. I don't know where I read or heard this, but there was a rumour that Clara had relations with an entire football team. I even looked it up on Snopes, and it said that it wasn't so. For some reason though, she didn't have a very good name in Hollywood; talk about the pot calling the kettle black, huh?
@HeavensHelp1 It's true that she was rather promiscuous, but NOT with a football team. She really wasn't much worse than the other film stars of Hollywood at that time, but she wasn't secretive about it. Also, her mother was a prostitute who locked her in a closet during her trysts w/ johns, and her father raped her, so that's probably where her promiscuity came from.
Clara actually made 11 talkies and it's a myth that her voice was a problem. She retired in 1933 about a year after she was married because she wanted to start a family. She went out on top and of her own will.
This song is actually from one of her talkies from 1930, Love Among the Millionaires.
@coopsgirl07 Actually, she retired because people were making awful rumors about her that included disgusting things-- such as beastiality. All lies, but still very hard on her. She was already rather unstable. But, yes, she did retire on her own.
This is fun! Too bad Clara never made it out of silents. Like so many from the silents, her voice was not "suitable" for 'talkies'. It's great to hear her. Thanks.
If you can get a gander at the authoritative Bow biography, "Runnin' Wild" by David Stenn, there are a couple of later pictures. She had put on some weight, but in my opinion, still would have had plenty of "It" for the movies.
She was clearly the inspiration for cartoon favorite Betty Boop - singing and all! And those eyes - they showed every emotion - they weren't just regualr almond-shape, they were also WIDESCREEN!

boy this girl had a rough life. Read about her childhood- her tears in movies were ALL REAL, she only had to think of her childhood to start crying.

I fell in love with her when I first saw her photos when I was a kid. One of the most beautiful women still. The "it" girl indeed!

She was also banned...She was quite the bisexual wilde child, think Katy Perry. The Catholics did not like that very much....
