  • I do have an older car. A 1987 Nissan Laurel 2.0 gasoline. When I am in neutral (it's a manual), and the engine is idling at the correct RPM and I push the throttle a little, and rev the engine, it takes a really long time to go down to the RPM where it should idle.

Got any idea why that is? I've driven other manual cars (an automatics), and mine is the first I've noticed that takes so long to fall back to its idling RPM.

  • @SpeedFreakNO hey, you're not supposed to revv it up like that anyway, serves no purpose. If it runs fine otherwise, leave it alone. If not, remove the throttle assembly, take it part, and clean out every single hole and make sure the throttle plate is shiny clean so it doesn't stick

  • I absolutely hate those new electronic pedals, one of the reasons being that they have little to no resistance when you push on them.

  • How can you see to do your work with those dark sun glasses you always wear?

  • @thhall459 it's bright here in Houston. And I'm getting old, the eye Doc says stay away from UV rays.

  • @scottykilmer Pfft. Getting old. You look fit as hell. And young too! :)

  • Hey scotty ! Thanks for your help :) im 16 years old and im learning a lot form you :) i am driving races and i got a nissan bluebird with a volvo 850 engine. Do you have any tip to get betther acceleration? My flywheel is lighter

  • @Hypnotisk yea put on a turbo or a supercharger.

  • @scottykilmer it is not allowed :(

  • @Hypnotisk then you're dealing with transmission gearing, or internal engine mods, big money there.

  • @Hypnotisk Lightweight flywheel is good. They may also make a lightweight pully set for it. My buddy got a set for his 300ZX and he said it felt like gaining 10 HP. Naturally they don't add horse power they just free up what you already have.

  • Just had to pick a Toyota didn't you.... Lmao

  • one reason i prefer older cars

  • more complicated bullshit to work on. god bless ya scotty. mechanics sure do have a tougher job now a days. sure do miss the carbureted days

  • wow they should have just stuck with the throttle cable design. computer controlled throttles don't seem safe at all!

  • was that a supra or a mr2?

  • @bobclavi it's a celica

  • @scottykilmer is that a gt4?

  • @bobclavi Supra is a front engined straight six, the mr2 is a transverse (sideways mounted) 4cyl like in the video except the engine is mid mounted. :)

  • but wouldnt it just rev up even if its in neutral?

  • @D1350Z well, if it did, at least you wouldn't be driving out of control and kill yourself.

  • scotty, i have a 2000 ford focus the car accelerate even when the car is in parking when turn the ac on can you help me please, tanks!!

  • @81avila watch my video "how to fix a car that idles poorlY" , often vacuum leaks on the intake system on those models too.

  • trhttle cables break thats how u run into your nieghbors back yard .always check your cables and potientiameters, and cables.

  • this is why i like older cars

  • @grizzlyrider2 yeah all you need is a simple throttle cable

  • Driving an old car ftw. What worries me... is the new steering by wire... wonder what happens if you blow the battery or alternator. Can you still turn?

Having said that... I drove some of the newer cars when mine was on recall... u can literally turn with your pinky. Also when you hit bumps the steering wheel doesn't jerk, because it isn't connected physically. Kind of relaxing. But I still love no abs, no trac, etc. Just a clutch, gears, cables, and hydraulic lines.

  • @lifeisgood070 im very curious now,as far as i know all steering systems are connected physically in case of failure, still have control...what kind of car was it?...cheers

  • @MyDucatiGT1000 I think you are right and I was wrong. I asked toyota. They said the system was just replaced with an electric steering pump instead of hydraulic. I got to drive a 2011 toyota matrix when my tacoma was in for the rust recall. I swear it felt like the wheels were not connected. But apparently it is just an electric rack/pump in place of a typically hydraulic one. A subaru forester which I drove a couple years ago had a similar feel. It's a weird feeling though.

  • @lifeisgood070 im a mechanic by trade, and i think it would be a very bad idea to have steering that worked off electrics only,if it failed the driver would have no control.i've dealt with electric powered hydrulics,if power steering fails there is still a mechanical connection with the rack and pinion.steering gets harder but still control, come along way with p/s but i don't think they will ever allow a steering system that relies on electrics only, could be fatal........have a good one, cheers :]

  • Older cars seem to be better since they put all electrical crap in it to just make it more expensive when it breaks. I'll keep driving my 95 corolla! :)

  • @mV33rs they put it in to keep up with ever more ridiculous government emission standards.

  • @mV33rs great little car..love em,easy to work on and simple, take care of it and it will last....i'd much rather that then a BMW or a merc, there shit.

  • @MyDucatiGT1000 I haven't see one in person or taken one apart. But it gives all the signs of not being connected.

    -Turning with minimal pressure

-Not feeling bumps transmitted from front wheels to steering column vibration (you still feel chassis vib though)

-Hitting a bump and feeling the front wheels move a little but the steering wheel not move then the wheels turn back. you know how u can hit a pot hole and the car will go slightly sideways in lane?

    Anyways... good day. :-D

  • i have a 1994 mercedes that started accelerating by itself, the throttle wasnt sticking though, its something with the computer i think.

  • i had 2 Unintended Acceleration problems..The second time it started accelerating i didnt bother and i drove it 3 miles through traffic lights till i reached the mechanic. Most of the time i was on 3rd gear and when i slowed down i was on 2nd gear!! The only thing you got to do is switch off the engine and start again with the gear in.. The only problem was that even if the cars engine was running my breaks were not working!!!! Exciting thought!!!! haha

  • So whats the advantage of having computerized throttle control after all ?

  • @sarathcpt they can make a LOT of money selling you one when it breaks. Basically, they want everything controlled by computers, that's the reason.

  • @scottykilmer all cars made now need to have a traction control system. This of course is electrical so it makes it way easier to for the computer to over-ride the throttle pedal input.

  • @parrowman yea, and I hate that trac crap. Makes working on them a pain, and really, if you can't drive a car, trac isn't going to save you or the people you hit.

  • @scottykilmer But the Trac crap is very useful on RWD cars in bad weather conditoins

  • @parrowman They could have come up with a failsafe design where a secondary throttle would simply override the main throttle in closing the airflow. Engine power is controlled primarily by the main throttle and the secondary only steps in when power needs to be cut.

  • @scottykilmer let's just hope they don't come up with a fully electronic automatic transmission because then you might not be able to shift into neutral as well.

  • @sarathcpt so that they can weed out shade tree mechanics like myself and people that have enough knowledge to fix their own cars so in the end we take our cars to the dealer and they make more money its corporate america they only want whats good for them

  • @sarathcpt It's also better for emissions. All the fuel injected engines I've seen (ok, not many) have had a secondary air valve system that lets some air bypass the throttle, as if the computer's got it's own little extra throttle to play with. It uses that to fine tune the fuel-air mixture and control the idle speed. Having a fully computerised throttle means that the regular throttle and secondary air valve can be combined into one unit, reducing the number of parts and making it cheaper.

  • lol wtf this is the first time I've ever heard of electronic throttles.

  • @n3rdbear they have been around since 2000 or maybe less

  • A friend of mine had a Torino that as soon as you touched the trottle it would go wide open. I told him the car was possessed by a demon or the motor mount was broken. It turned out it wasn't a demon. The broken motor mount (rubber) caused the engine to tilt and pull the throttle cable!.

  • epah, toyota!!

  • just use your common sense, put the car N

  • The big "to-do" over the unintended acceleration was because the domestic car makers can't compete with the quality of the imports so they pushed all these claims into the media about the Prius accelerating out of control. The Prius does not make enough power to overpower the brakes and you can hold the start/stop button in and the engine shuts off. People are just dumb and if they died from it, then Darwin did what is best for the world.

  • You sound like that bloke from Happy Gilmore " You will not make this putt.. ya jackass! "

  • I know they are working on brake-by-wire & steer-by-wire systems. Won't that be fun?

  • I wish I could Matrix Download all of his knowledge!

  • You guys know, how to turn the key 3 times fast on cars before 1994 right? each blink is 1 and a break is new number, thats your code :)

  • HA! That's why I'm glad I drive a '95 Dodge Stealth... You're awesome Scotty

  • Subscribed! / Jeep-Simon

  • if you shift it into neutral wont the engine rev to redline?

  • @3NOSHITSHERLOCK3 not normally, but even if it did, it's better than wrecking your car, and if you turn the key off it won't revv at all scotty

  • @scottykilmer Besides that's why cars have a revlimiter, to protect the engine from over revving. So as said pop in to neutral. worst case scenario you bounce off the rev limiter while you coast your car to the side of the road, THEN TURN THE CAR OFF AND CAR FOR A TOW. As said this is really important as you can still make use of power steering, power brakes and ABS. Thanks for the videos Scotty.

  • @scottykilmer Yes and once the engine has stopped and you are in neutral put the key back to the "on" position so the steering lock doesn't come on.

  • @3NOSHITSHERLOCK3 Like Scotty says, shift it into Neutral, stamp on the brake and pull over, then switch off the engine - oh yeah - pull on the hand brake. They should teach this basic stuff at driver ed.

  • @3NOSHITSHERLOCK3 ik your comments is old i know a lot of modern automatic cars will have a rev limiter when its in nutrual. i was just having fun one day in my 2010 and it redlines at 8rpm and the automatic only let it go to about 7.

  • @3NOSHITSHERLOCK3 A strange thing happens when you shut off the key, the engine stops. You can also hold the brakes and the car will stop. I can't think of any car that makes so much power (stock) that the brakes won't stop the car even with the engine wide open.

  • if you shift it into neutral wont the engine rev to redline?

  • Dude You Are Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • how did u do code checks on pre 96 cars?

  • @Matthew55904 you need an old obd I code reader, and they are different for many different cars. Scotty I use an old snap on VERY expensive tool

  • @scottykilmer do you use a vat 40 or micro vat or sumthing different?

  • @scottykilmer With a lot of cars you can use a penny paper clip to ground two pins together, and the check engine will flash indicating the error code. At least some older GM vehicles anyway.

  • @eliw4232 Older gm vehicles yes. There's a how to somewhere on youtube

  • just curious if i have a 96 ford explorer and the pedal sticks would this still be an accelerator problem?

  • @Lburna84able yes, often the throttles stick in those,k clean em as I show in my video "Fixing a car that idles poorly" on the scottykilmer channel on youtube. Scotty

  • every ford truck i see with the tailgate up i sit and wonder when scotty is gonna pop out lol

  • when people freak out, they're don't know what to do (at that moment of time). Especially woman (no Fucking offense and dont reply me)

  • What is with Scotty and trunks. And.. is that a Alltrac Celica you had in this video?!

  • @Jayeeyee Naa, I've never actually ever seen an alltrac celica, I know they make em, but I've never seen one here in texas. Scotty

  • wouldnt puting the neutrual in rev the engine like hell then?

  • @tarpys But its better then raming into the truck ahead of you! lol

  • i'm disgusted, but not surprised that so many people don't know this

  • @defect0r1 I know it is so simple to stop from being in a crash and a lot of people dont think of it

  • Good vdieo..

  • I'd rather have a blown engine than driving into a wall at 100mph. Sometimes being neutral is the best thing.

  • I put my Saturn in neutral but engine was revving very high, so I had to turn it off at the side of the road and then spray lubricant on it.

  • anyone with any kind of comand sence would know you should but the car in neutral

  • @12344richard people freak out, and common sense isn't as common as it used to be. Scotty

  • Lesson: Don't buy a toyota

  • @BoyPocketsJr You didn't comprehend the video at all. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer

    You tell em Scotty

  • It seems like it would be cheaper for automotive companies to just use the cable system. I don't understand why cars seem to become more computerized and complicated for very little benefit in return.

  • @sketchyinc

i think its all about ease of building.. my car raise the idle by 100-200rpm when AC is on.. with an mechanical system it would be more expensive then telling the computer to raise the rpm and more that can fail.

  • i feel like car companies are trying to make things more complicated so that you have to take your car into the mechanic. i notice that newer cars have abunch of plastic covering the intake manifolds and other components. older cars have everything in plain sight.

  • yeah i have done that b4 is that bad for the tranny

  • @vinngrizzle yes, you don't want to do that too often. Scotty

  • @ScottyKilmer can you change the new accelerator to the old one with the cable? If so can you make a video please? And I really appreciate your videos, there funny and helpful and it gives you a bit of courage to thank you!

  • @d3v3ouzm1ndz NO you can't, completely different systems. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer that SUCKS....well then can you get the car without the new system or you just have no choice what so ever...? which would suck...

  • @d3v3ouzm1ndz No, almost all cars are made that way now as it's a cheaper way to build them. Scotty

  • Hey scotty I work at a toyota dealership (technician) when the u.s congress (and media) made a big deal over sticking accelerators toyota, was selling the most cars in america, Because of the Bailouts, at the time, it was in the governments best interest to slow them down. The pedals that were recalled were made by CTS, toyota only uses 10% of the pedals CTS makes the rest go to FORD CHRYSLER, and GM. CHRYSLER and GM? have had recalls but no oneheard of them.

  • @markification Ah, a conspiracy theorist. I tend to agree with you though. Scotty

  • prius commercials perfect for the video

  • I agree. I like good ol throttle cables. I am not a fan of putting all of these motors and computers in cars because they dont always respond correctly. I dont want a computer controlling the throttle of my car

  • SO TRUE Scotty. Here is a bit of tech that is cheaper to make and eliminates cable lubrication, but if it does go wrong the repair costs will be bigger. In aircraft, fly-by-wire saves a lot of weight. In cars ??

  • @SolonicToyota1991 Yea, another B.S. American Idiot Media frenzy, typical. Scotty

  • Scotty when You shift a car into neutral when it is accelerating when you don't want it to, wont the car rev really high and and have a chance of damaging the engine.

  • @xJINGLESx99 not really, they have rev limiters on most cars, and it sure beats getting in a wreck. scotty

  • Comment removed

  • I prefer cables, they're easy to fix if they go wrong and they're idiot proof!

  • very helpful video Scott y...the cable bit..might be the reason why my gas peddle feels hard when i accelerate.

  • i prefer cables, they claim the fly by wire or electric pedals work better and do all this good stuff but if im driving the car i still prefer to have a direct physical connection to everything im controlling

  • i too thought sticking the car into neutral would solve this issue.... but i heard this one lady's testimony that even when she put the car in neutral AND reverse, the car kept accelerating. im not sure if she was telling the truth.

  • @eundaddy those are completely lies (from the lady). First, shifting into neutral will always disconnect the engine and transmission. Second (and this is how i know she's lying), automatic transmissions (on newer cars) have a safety device called Reverse Inhibit designed into transmissions to prevent inadvertent selection of reverse. Putting it into reverse (in modern cars) when going forward has no action at all, the car just ignores the request until you get down to a proper speed.

  • Actually having an electronically controlled throttle like this makes creating a car cheaper for the manufacturers. This way they DO NOT need a separate Cruise Control Module, IAC Valve and throttle blade, it can all be controlled by the one butterfly valve and an electric motor attached to it.

  • @Desterado Of course it makes it cheaper for them to make them, which unfortunately is the route they are all going, cheaper and cheaper. Big mistake if you ask me. Scotty

  • Unfortunately you can't do anything about dumb drivers.

  • I tell so many people this, it's not a big deal or a real hazard, and it's pretty sad a whole family dies in an unintendedly accelerating lexus because they didn't know this.

  • @crazysamz Yes, that's the main reason I made this video. I found out my own customers had no idea what to do. And it's SO simple. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer @scottykilmer I imagine you saw the article regarding Toyota's 10 mil settlement?

Is it true that at 120mph it's difficult to throw the gear lever into neutral? I find that hard to believe ... what's your opinion Scotty?

  • @MichaelAlphonsePhoto No, it's not difficult to go into neutral at any speed, but really, why the heck would anyone allow a vehicle to get to 120 mph in the first place? the old "gee, I didn't know I was going that fast" argument wouldn't work too well there. Scotty

  • scotty can you do a stereo installation vid,one day

  • @hp11208 Yea, if anyone brings me one. My cars all came with stereos in em. Scotty

  • Yes scotty , modern technology is not always a good thing , experienced car people like you should be listened to when car companies make new technologies , we have cars that are pain to replace spark plugs for , the white collar engineers should consult hands on people , not just draw it , and make it , with almost no testing period . God bless you Scotty

  • Thanks for the advice Scotty, now could you help me improve my INTENDED acceleration? LOL

  • @nightmathzombieethan I would like a how to on some basic to medium improvements that could be made to a Honda accords acceleration as well.

  • @tonkpilsmaggot666 LMAO I drive an Accord as well (A fairly cherry 81!) I love her, but she's not exactly about to win any races! LOL

  • @tonkpilsmaggot666 Oh, cars are made pretty well the way they are designed to go the fastest they can for their design and to get the best gas mileage at the same time. If you mess with going faster, you will then get worse gas mileage. If you want speed, get a bigger engine, if you want gas mileage, get a smaller one. Scotty

  • @nightmathzombieethan I would like a how to on some basic to medium improvements that could be made to a Honda Accords acceleration as well.

  • Some cars are using drive by wire brake systems. That is, the brake pedal is not physically connected to the brake booster/master cylinder. A computer does all of this for you by means of an actuator that gets a signal from the brake pedal.

That's just asking for trouble. Of course they will build in some kind of fail safe radar in the bumper to reduce anxiety about it but I would never buy a car with that system on it. The cost of the car would be significantly higher too.

  • if you put into neutral, wont that give the engine less(or no) resistance from the transmission. causing the engine to redline or burnout??? kinda like revving the engine when your in park??

  • @AllinTMC Most cars have rev limiters on them, and if you're worried about dying in a high speed crash, better to blow an engine than blow your brains out. Scotty

  • Comment removed

  • Some luxury cars have throttle, brake and steer by wire; excessive complexity is not always better Besides the performance is usually sluggish and disconnected feeling. Now some motorcycles are throttle-by-wire, I have already seen two bikes come in to my shop with sensor failures; one Rider was accelerating on to a highway, suddenly the throttle goes to idle(fail safe) and the rider almost gets hit by a semi. I want to have direct mechanical control of whatever i drive.

  • @zozx Aye men, I agree. But the engineers do not. Scotty

  • @zozx I totally agree with you , when drive by wire cars and bikes become old , say 15 years from new condition , they can become real death traps , old cars were really Plug and Play devices , put gasoline, oil ......and go , that simple

  • Yeah you tell 'em Scotty! It's a wonder how all these people have never heard of neutral.

  • The whole Toyota debacle was all about a nonexistent problem, mass hysteria, 'me-too' idiots, and sheer stupidity than about any car actually having a problem.

  • @sbakar Well, I tend to agree with this, as I've never seen it happen, non of the other mechanics I know have never seen it happen with any of their customers either, and the media loves hysterical stories about frightened people racing down the highway to their imminent deaths. I know, I used to do a TV car talk segment on CBS. I remember hearing the news program directors yelling at the cameramen to get pictures of bigger flames for their stories. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer That's not surprising given that ratings are so dependent on viewership. Audi almost went under in the 1980s after the fake 'investigation'.

People like to fixate on things that the media shows them. The truth and logic are the first casualties, and all sense is lost. For example, I bet many more people die from the garbage rolling around in their footwells and jamming pedals than from a so-called 'acceleration problem'.

  • @sbakar LOL Yeah, I actually felt kinda bad for Toyota, years of producing great cars and they have one little "mess-up" which wasn't that big a problem to start with, but the media ran away with the story and really put a blemish on Toyota's record. I think as a company they are STILL recuperating from the "PR hit".

  • I'm starting to like the older cars too Scotty after looking at how little work space there is in that 2007 Toyota Camry. It's like a maze in raiders of the lost arc all in a closet! what will we all do once all the older cars become too old to find parts for? Lord help us.

  • I drive a standard. So this doesn't worry me much.

  • people dont know what neutral is half the time....its all ignorance

  • @g20s10silveradoman Yep, that's why I made this video. and lots of people don't even know if they have anti locking brakes on their vehicles, which also is a big deal. Ignorance is everywhere. Scotty

  • You should fix the unintended vehicle acceleration on your motorcycle in the intro...

  • @sbaker3232 Lmao i don´t think it´s actually unintended.....

  • @sbaker3232 that's intended acceleration. Scotty

  • When I think back to what you said about my Kia Scotty, It makes me wonder why the majority of your videos involve you fixing Toyotas

  • @DJEddieXZ Because I own 4 of them and use them as examples. If you look closely, sometimes I am not actually fixing something that was broken, as when I show brake jobs, the old brakes aren't really worn down far in my videos as they are used only as examples of how to do the job. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer I see, I went to a good mechanic and I found out that the idiots who were supposed to fix it, Did nothing, thats why I had those problems, I got them fixed and I have no problems! Too bad your not in NY

  • ths is only a problem if u drive a Toyota Lexus or BMW if u dont drive any of those u have nothign to worry about

  • Could having an engine running on the lean side cause unintended acceleration from a dead stop?

  • @mechanicwarrior20 No, it would run slower being lean, that has nothing to do with it. Scotty

  • could unintended acceleration also happen if the engine is running too lean?

  • I hate electronic throttle. my mom drives a '10 Ford escape. If i mash the gas peddle to the floor real quick, the delay actually causes the engine not to rev really. on my '97 ranger though, it revs all the way up and then down when i do that. Love it.

  • hey your a texan! best kind of people lol

  • Fly by wire might be good for an F-16, but give me a steel cable any day.

  • @CoolasIce2 hahaha trust me, its the best thing in modern planes but when your not fighting 1000's of newtons of force to control your vehical then whats the point of having the computer do it all for you? I agree, fly-by-wire in the air, cables on the ground, its all so much easier to DIY fix, provided you know what your doing or have one of Scott's vids to help you :)

  • sooo true

  • good video Scotty

  • I don't like how the Government is regulating cars. Let's say we have an out of control Government who wants some people to die. Well they could just remotely control your car. Not allow the car to shut off, brakes to work, steering to work, and completely max out the accelerator killing you and no one would ever realize thats what happened.

That is where all this is going. We must fight these global warming dupes who keep pushing for newer cars. Drive the old ones as long as you can.

  • Great video Scotty...I thought the same thing about turning the key off and I also thought it would suck to have the steering wheel lock up on you!!! Thumbs up.

  • Never had a car with a computer conrolled throttle and can't see the need for one.

  • scotty, you're a good mechanic, thanks for all your help, keep up the good work!

  • if anyone has or wants to know about Fords unintended acceleration in the 1987-1995 F series truck, full size bronco and econoline with 5.0 and 5.8 V8 engines keep reading.

this summer my truck would rev up to 2500-3000RPM when first started it and stay there until it was turned off. even later on after starting it again it did the same thing. the accel cable was not stuck or propped, it was the TPS on the throttle body. just unplug it and replace it as soon as possible. temp fix take + off batt

  • This is why i wish americans are forced to learn how to drive stickshift or there were less automatics arround. It would force people to actually learn how their car drives.

I have met so many people that didnt know what "N" meant out of the whole "P,R,N,D,4,3,2,1" setup.

  • I have to agree, I prefer the regular cable too. Scotty, gota ask though. For a car like that Camry for instance, don't they also use computers instead of cables to change your gear selection? Do they even use a cable anymore? Not trying to throw a bunch of what if's out there...but if the throttle is sticking and you have an electronic gear changer (like a Prius) instead of a cable opperated selector, does the same concept apply there?

  • @Duratec86 My thoughts exactly...something tells me that a Prius wouldn't allow you to shift to Neutral with the throttle stuck open in Drive.

  • thank you for finally making it clear, my celica and camry did this and they were old cars. ppl cry for anything these days and blame the manufacturer, just lift the pedle with your foot. happens a lot during winter especially

  • I really hate those stupid new electronic throttles. It's so unnecessarily complicated, and provides no advantages! I can't see what these auto makers are thinking. Even if it were somehow cheaper to use the electronic throttles, I would still rather pay a few bucks extra for the physical connection.

I mean, it's like designing a new door knob where when you turn the handle, a computer instructs a servo to retract the latch, it's just completely unnecessary, and just more crap to break!

  • @sbab83

    it improves gas mileage.
