Selassie was a king & he did not call himself King of Kings & Lord of Lords the Rastafarian movement that stated in 1930s in Jamaica did that. Because of several facts- his Dynasty traced back to the 13th centry from King Solomon, Queen of Sheba & several statements that are in the bible (King James Bible) especially this Psalm 87:1-7

The emperor had nothing to do with the starvation of Ethiopia. Fascist Italy invaded the Ethiopians in 1935; after they had signed a peace agreement & civil wars were the cost of starvation. The Ethiopian armies were defeated. Selassie,fled to exile in England, make an impact on the world with his dignity in a lecture to the L.O.N protesting Italy invasion. Returned in 1941, & regained his throne with the defeat of the Italians dependent on the British.
