@kathryn120 Backgammon does require skill, otherwise the same guy couldn't win the backgammon championships multiple times. The game is a mix of luck and skill, as anyone who has experience playing the game will know. Poker is similar in that it is part luck (you don't get to choose your cards) and part skill (you can choose how to play them, or play the opponent). It is far from being a stupid game. If it was, it wouldn't have lasted 5000 years.

According to nearly every backgammon site I've seen, the board should be set up the other way around. I.e switch the 24 point with the checkers on the 13th point, and the 8th point with the checkers on the 5th point.

I started playing with this setup, then realising that every other guide I've seen shows the opposite.

Am I wrong?

@spntneous Yes this looks wrong to me, not much of an expert i would say, but i think that 24 point and 13 point should be switched as well as the 8th and 3rd... WEIRD

@spntneous It goes both ways. One is just a mirror image of the other. You just reverse which direction you play based on how you set up the checkers. Some people are used to playing one way or another way, but both are correct.

This fellow is NOT a good teacher of the game.

For new players who want to learn, I recommend the "monkeyseevideos" series, with host Vic. He's clear, takes it slowly, and covers different situations. Do a youtube search for user "monkeyseevideos". He uses white and blue checkers on the board, so you know you have the right vids when you see that.  Good luck.

Seriously, backgammon is not that hard to learn (at least the basic rules). It's very similar to Parcheesi. The board setup is kinda weird, true, but after that, it's not hard to comprehend.
