@gavsky23 Holy crap, it does sound alot like "Virginia Plain." But no where near as good as Roxy in my opinion. And that keyboard break sounds like Mott the Hoople's "All the Way from Memphis"! Not enough to be sued or anything... just enough to noticeable...
I LOVE THIS SONG!................want some bad a s s gossip from their '75 darwin stop-over that never got reported............go to "jenny morris she has to be loved nzoz1989" and press "see all" to find my 3 hidden comments.
@fortheloveoftunes = and: ( quote) is the great-grandson of Robert Kajanus: composer, conductor, confidant of Sibelius and founder of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra.
God, I heard this song today on the radio and I hadn't heard it for years. It's such a great song and really catchy! I couldn't remember the name of the band but at first I thought it was Sparks because it has a very similar sound to them. If this came out in 1976 then for me it was one of the only good things about that year because that's the year my dad died, when I was 13. I think Abba also won the Eurovision Song Contest in that year too though so there were some nice things.
I thought for years that this was Roxy Music and therefore sang it in the stylie! Now I know better and still sing it in a Roxy Stylie. Cock on, babe.
@antimanc9 You, me and loads of other people. I.d forgotten how good this was. They suffered in the 70s because of the great singles/album divide when writing clever, literate 3 minute pop songs didn't get the credit it deserved.
This reminds me of the New York Bar In Wakefield, when Paul Kelly used to play the records, it was the best bar ever, 1977-1990. Good days, good ways. The Amsterdam Bar, Huddersfield was like an episode of Hi de Hi compared to it.
Easily mistaken for a Roxy Music number .. Thats no insult !! I wonder looking foreward and back and beyond if they were too hasty when picking a name for the band ... For such a talented band their name didn't do them justice !! Thats just my opinion !!
@owainglyndwr16 WOW your right..I like Roxy music since last year and I thought this was really like them...so similar...anyway this songs flippin GREAT....I doubt any of my m8s agree but f*** them hahaha...and the bands name Sailor is really gay I gotta say also but I spose it was 70s/80s so it was different then ...glad you mentioned roxy music...I forgot about them and now am gonna watch some of their vids ;D
True enough. I hadn't really heard Roxy in 1976 - I was only 7, and never noticed any similarity. Still a great song even if it is wearing it's influences a little too obviously.
Also reminds me a bit of XTC although it predates their first stuff by a couple of years.
@topkkat, there was the Camp Rock fashion of the day, but there was still a lot of talent beneath the fancy duds, in many bands.
As others have pointed out, this is a brilliantly crafted pop song. Catchy, happy, hopeful, fun. Remember that the essence of a show is entertainment, and the Sailor stage show was about performance (of course), as well as musicianship. That's why they are still performing and attracting crowds. You need to be larger than life on stage, and the clothing & actions help.
It was really the end by then in 1976 for the Huge English Glamrock....after Mud, Rubettes, Sweet, Smokie, Slade....1977 was suddenly a total different year with punk and later on also Disco!! Great memories in the 70*ies how everything changed so fast (much more than the 60ies)
Quite simply the best pop song ever written. If Ringo could could have pulled off a more camp look than Sailor's drummer does at around 2.01..... The Beatles could have been huge. Awesome track.
right, ok, I am a serious music fan. You know, Henry cow, Steve Reich, Terry Riley, all that experimental stuff. But this? This? I bloody love it and have done ever since it came out about 35 years ago. Pure pop and all the better for it
Too many people claimed Sailor sounded too much like Roxy Music. There is no such comparison. Sailor and Roxy' are as different as chalk and cheese. There was never anything to compare with the sound of Sailor's "Giant Nickelodeon" (their keyboard 'set-up'). Each band was unique in their own way.
No doubt if they were around today I'd denouce them as too poncey but back in the day they were gods. I loved this song! Right I'll just creep away quietly now and hide my face.
@topkkat You know given the quality of song writing 'today' I'm proud to admit to liking and supporting Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, Pilot, Smile, Pussycat, Mud, Clifford T. Ward, Duncan Browne, Marc Bolan, and other MOR bands. The songs they wrote that made us smile and for we were happier than we had been (even if that was just 2 mins 30 sec). As Toyah Wilcox sang, "be loud be proud, be heard" ... lol
@topkkat i remember this song too and liked it back then and still do....shame todays musicians arent musiciams putting songs together as good as this
