  • I would hope that idub42 has grown some since his original comment. Nothing but respect for Keone and all those getting work done for the right reasons, and in the right way.

  • this took me back a while. haha

  • Don't worry about that fake fat samoan net banger "idub42" thinking he's better than any other Polynesian just because he's "samoan". Hawaiians have every right to revive their tattooing heritage just as much as any other Polynesian. It's not just for Samoans only. Stay ready my Hawaiian cousins and don't let anyone get you down. Aroha Nui.

  • @kaiwhatu kia ora

  • I meant to say ", etc." after listing Samoa and the other places. I want to include all of Polynesia.

  • Thank you for being Maoli. The future ones now see...

  • @Cheehoo9- you have no idea what you're talkin about.

  • Malo e lelei, Aloha, Talofa, Kia Ora!,I am a proud Tongan, but importantly a proud POLYNESIAN! I carry my Ta Tatau in respect of my culture, family, loved ones and my of my culture. I am proud that all polynesians are unique with our culture, & that we must keep our beautiful culture alive. After travelling the world and seeing how unique we are, I am blessed every time I return to the islands. Its not about who started what, or kept their culture alive from western influences. ONE LOVE!!

  • this is too all the negative speaking

tatau, tamoko, kakau and so on are all named differently they all have a different look, back ground, culture that they reside in but look at this if the art is kept inside the triangle then don't be so negative we all relate some how notice how we are polynesian just we lived on different islands so no matter how if you hawaiian samoan maori marquesan fijian togan etc.. we all are equal, my self im hawaiian but for sure i am polynesian

  • @idub42, you should be happy that other people are showing an interest in your culture, i would imagine that most people who are getting this type of art work have an interest in the culture they are getting a tattoo from, and want to know more about it to get something that has eternal meaning to them! think about it!

  • HAWAIIANS CREATED TATOOS THE FIRST TO INK SKIN AND RIDE WAVES

  • @hobahfish samoa invented tattoing but i hawaiian

  • The origin of tattooing to us is of divine command. Ta'aroa the supreme god sent two of his sons. These tow gods taught the people the spiritual and the social lore which made up the traditional fabric of our society. They tattooed all the living creatures, thus giving them specxial colors & markings. These two gods are said to ha e come to the people and said... maururu nui MULTINESIA for sharing a part of da tamariki o polinisia, ua rau tatu mai a matua na tangata fenua... i'm micronesia btw

  • You must become tattooed, so that you become beautiful. Everything will pass after death. Only tghe tattoos will remain; they will outlive you. A human will leave all and everything behind on earth. All his/her belongings; only the tattoos will be taken to the grave...

  • I have a question. I am white surfer and have always loved polynesian culture and its concepts. Although i am not directly polynesian I have always felt a close bond with nature, the ocean and my family. I would love to get a traditional polynesian tattoo designed for me, almost as a way to pay my respects. What are peoples views on this matter? Good, bad, offensive etc?

  • @zizzilock Im maori from NZ and although i love the fact that foreigners like our tattoos I personally think that unless you have some polynesian or maori blood you should not get our traditional tattoos because its our identity a mark with our family and traditions engraved on it,an Identity to say to the world we are polynesian, would you scar your face like in africa and look like an african when your not because you like it?

  • fuck idub42! faka how darr you disrespect our culture. you fake, fuck samoans! get off out islands denn! ai kukae kanaka kamoa keto!

  • @n0akubirds watch your dirty mouth fool! dont be saying shit like dat about an entire culture; "fuck samoans", you'll get your ass beat up off your own island.. not all samoans are prideful a shit bruh, only a few..so dont be hatin' all of us because of a couple ignorants. ONE.

  • In response to IDUB42 post, learn polynesian history you idiot. Then you will see that it is tradition that all polynesian did. The only reason your culture still is strong is because the western world influences did impact Samoa like hawaii, and your not in strategical position for the military. So before you crack your mouth THINK>

  • hey my young bruddas, how bout the 5000!!! year old Irish bogman...bugger had beautiful tats. Musta been one sailor wen lose da way...one a dos bruddas wen neva cum home eh...

cumaaaahhhnnn this stuff is all much older than memory----Aloha, me ke Aloha nui

  • I hope i get to meet Keone one day, and hopefully i could get a traditional tattoo from him too... In time... nice Vid!!

  • Wow I'm truly astounded at the level of ignorant comments about Polynesians here. Absolute despicable display and lack of knowledgeable History. "Bold Tattoo" indeed Keone, Kanaka Maoli Kakau is one of the strongest Tattoo's in all of Polynesia, not to denigrate other Polynesians, but Kanaka Maoli patterns are extremely intricate in it's geometric patterns which backs the notion that the Kanaka Maoli understood mathematical positions and placements, which is why they excelled in Voyaging.

  • Shameful on those that hate on other polynesians.... The video is showing the different styles the different cultures and the ways of the people and what it means in each person about where they came from and who they represent shameful that some of you polynesians act as if your the only islander with pride. Polynesians all have pride but some of you ignorants today tend to think your the last standing proud poly? Well what a lonely person you must be.. XD multinesia thanks for your vids

  • I'm Samoan and it's embarassing when other Samoans start making these patronizing claims, as if we're better than anyone because we have strong tattooing history. I'm proud of the Hawaiians reviving this part of their culture, and to the Samoans who are so prideful that they create divisions among our closest kin, grow the hell up.

  • What's with all this rivalry? Open your mind and respect others.

  • i still love my maori design but much respect to all the other traditional polynesian tattoo artists all the south pacific brothers n sisters and my brown peeps in hawaii, thats one thing the white man can neva take away from us.

  • Whether its hawaiian, fijian, moari, samoan or whatever the culture may be...the thing that fascinates me about polynesian tattoo is the artists vision. Respect is definitely expected when obtaining a tattoo ANY sort, but it does frustrate me when people compare or even try to compete designs!! It would be humble to understand the variety of cultural body art and consider the concept as SKILL!!

  • EIA NEI NA MAMAKAKAUA!

    UA ALA A KU'E KU'E KU'E.KA MAMAKAKAUA HANOHANO KU'E. EO!

A ina a'ole 'oukou ke maopopo ko makou ola, ko makou mole,ka mo'omeheu o na maoli mai keia honua, e ola ana 'oukou me ka ha o ke kanaka haole.

E OLA MAU KA LAHUI MAOLI!

  • Uhi are older than Samoa .. used by Uenuku in the realm of Te Rarohenga and were brought to Hawaiiki by Mataora. Where is Hawaiiki??? .. well it could be Hawai'i or it could be Savai'i depending on how you wanna say it.

  • Nga mihi nunui kia tatou nga uri o maui te nukurau ... kia ora to all our brothersd and all our tohunga-tofuna-kahuna who hold strong to the ways of our ancestors and keep it all alive. Ko koe ko au ko au ko koe .. i am you and you are me and we all own the art of tatau-kakau-tamoko

  • Aye?? Man you go back 2000 years ago and all polys are tattooin like this!! Maori, Samoan, Hawaiin, Tongan. If you didnt know somewhere way back all polys came from the same place. So stop hatin man. Hawaii big ups, Revive the culture that was taken from you!! Us maori feel you bro!

  • People Can hate as much as they want but

this is still my pride and blood, i have to respect it

  • yeahh ! great video ! awesome tatoos !

  • this is some bullshit! why all of the sudden, the hawaiians using the samoan tools. soo damn fake dis guy. alaniho is just a generic samoan pe'a. samoans made up the damn tattooin game. dis is a samoan tradition.

  • He was trained by the Su'a Sulape in Samoa and given permission to use the tools.

  • @MULTINESIA how did they sharpen the bone teeth??

  • you know what, u should shut ya damn mout and no act, i know this man better then you, so no act. Have some Respect.

  • thats the problem today with people, no respect for nothing,we respect all of our ohana(tahitian.samoan, tongan, fijian, maori, all

the same, some of my best friends are samoan,

they teach love, respect, family,to younger ones,to bring the culture forward instead of backward,we are very greatful for are samoan ohana, much respect--mahalo

  • @idub42 who gives a fuck.

  • @idub42 Any historical facts Samoans "made up the damn tattooin game" and alaniho is not a generic pe'a, watch your lip

  • @idub42 We Polynesians are all interconnected. Much of what Hawaii appreciates traditionally has come from Samoa, Tahiti, and Aotearoa and the same could be said for those cultures as well. Let's not play the "who did it first" game. This is about preserving Polynesian culture; it's not about having a pissing contest.

  • @idub42 do your home work brah and chill.

  • Samoa is the only Polynesians that still perform traditional Samoan tatoo's and have been doing it for over 2000 years. Samoans are now helping other Polynesian islands revive their own traditional tatoos. If you really think about it I dont think that it is possible to revive an art that has been lost for thousands of years hence the reason why every tool and design that other Polynesians use for revival of their own tatoo's are exactly like Samoa's tools and designs

  • MV,just because the marks mean nothing to you,the traditional desigsns should hold more of an importance and feeling of connection to the past of the people who have Native blood and choose to get those marks on their body.If you dont like it just cuz its not pretty enough for you, then why knock it? Peace!

  • I love when the Hawai'i Aloha is playin in the back ground! South Pacific all the way!!!!!!!

  • test

  • wheres my comment at?

  • In REPLY thread to DaHawaiian06

  • DaHawaiian06 -why do you use a word the "crackas" made up (polynesian)...to cling on to Samoan culture? Tatau/Kakau is Samoan. and btw I have seen "crackas" show more respect for Samoan Tatau/Kakau than hawaiians. Leave the palagi out of it...

  • Dahawaiian06, why do you use a word the "crackas" invented(polynesian)...to cling on to Samoan culture? Tatau/Katau is Samoan.

and btw, most Palagi I know have more respect for Tatau/Kakau then the Hawaiians. Those Palagi respect and acknowledge that its a true Samoan tradition...not just some "tattoo" thing.

  • your one ignorant kid,"disgrace to true hawaiians".stop the hate for "whites" and get over it kid.your always going on other polynesian vids always trying to envoke and instigate hate for caucasions.grow the f**k up and get your facts straight before you start pointing fingers.i see you didnt post my comment on your video "before and after".i guess i struck a nerve huh? its ignorant f**ks like you that put hawaii youth back ten fold.keep that f**k whitey sh*t off poly vids.1 luv to real polys.

  • hey do u kno how i can get in contact with him?!

  • Last seen in Nanakuli at the local health clinic. Folks out there will know.

  • thanks. i'll hit um up when im back on the islands in the summer. heard the wait is long to get one from him. tru?

  • He's pretty popular. Plus he wants you to think about your tatau, ohaha, ancestors, etc. So yeah, it might take a while. But it will be worth the wait.

  • Thank you for the great content. This video is now playing on Hawaii Pictures (dot) com. Mahalos! Check the chat room on the bottom of the home page.

  • what a bunch of bullshit! yeah i guess the tools are hawai'ian too. I heard that during the filming of this video for "pbs" all the context and topics they are refering too was from petelo suluape. brother of the late paulo suluape who taught john nunez the traditional technique.

  • This is totally correct. Keone Nunez would be the first person to acknowledge his relationship with Su'a Suluape as teacher and mentor. Ssamoans kept the tatau traditions going for 2000 years and shared it with others reviving their cultural traditions. That's hardly "bullshit".

  • and who would you be to say otherwise? Are you some world renown authority on the subject? You like everyone else are outsiders looking in. Therefore what you hear is what you conseive everything to be. "a Revival"? from what source? maybe european renderrings in text books with the aid of Samoan protocols. And call it "ka kakau" from the samoan "Ta tatau". Now that is bullshit.

  • And who are you to diss other people's (Hawaiian) arts and cultures? C'mon bro, less hate more tolerance.

  • (multinesia)It didn't sound he was dissing anyone...just educating on people on the truth.
