I came here from K80Blog's video to see what your response was. Anyway, I get that you're not making a political statement, but is simulating violence to a penis really conveying gender ambiguity? Isn't it more likely to convey a message against male-ness? Does severing a phallus make something ambiguous in terms of gender? I guess my question is too serious for YouTube, especially YouTube comments.

if there's anything really related to anything in the video idea, it's transsexuality. The removal of one's own penis represents a change of gender. Does a penis make a person male, or is it more than that? and at what point in a gender transition does the individual become another sex? When the genitals are changed? before that? hence- gender ambiguity. It's kind of lame, though, having to defend myself against being thought of as anti-male when i just got into this to make a jello weiner.

Oh please don't think I'm calling you "anti-male." I thought no such thing. I just thought the artistic gesture might convey that. YouTube comments are so bad for tone; I expect every comment is read in a harsh, sarcastic way.

Anyway, your response is interesting. It's so hard for me, artistically, to separate artistic portrayals of the penis from the symbolism of patriarichal authority and power. That's why I actually thought the first painting was better.

I also think that the image of severing a penis doesn't convey gender ambiguity. I don't think it undermines the 'male-ness' of a person. It just, to me, conveys injury and violence. I think the connotation of violence (emphasized with the blood) takes the statement so far away from a positive gender ambiguity. I almost think a better approach is one that eschews representations of overt maleness or femaleness. But anyway, I wasn't trying to criticize, just have an interesting discussion.

Anyway, I mean a positive appraisal of ambiguity in gender--a way of looking at eschewing gender categories that doesn't have to be violent towards any of them. There's lot of theory on protean identity (most of it American) that gestures towards positive relationships with ambiguity.

Well, I'm a poor artist, so I'm not sure any of my ideas would be very good. I was thinking about it, though, when I wrote earlier, but all I could think of then was vague, something that didn't include any identifiable sexual characteristics. Then, we end up with landscape painting. That wouldn't do.

In terms of representations of genitalia, a painting where one cannot tell if they are looking at a penis or vagina might be suitable.

I recall a discussion of Heidegger's picked up in Derrida's "The Truth in Painting" regarding a shoe. The shoe is an interesting symbol, both yonic and phallic, and tied up in fetishistic concerns. Any object that can operate in both ways simultaneously, and not favour one over the other, might be portrayed in suggestive ways.
