And when Jeff Hardy was headlining TNA, look at the state TNA was in at the time. Ron Killings was the champion at one point too, that means nothing.
Look at what happened when Jeff Hardy tried to wrestle in ROH. He blew nearly every spot and got booed out of the building.

Chris Jericho was a huge star long before '05-'06. I often wonder why WCW didn't make a stronger push to sign him back when they had him, because he was extremely over. He simply got stale in WWE over the years, but that happens to everyone (see: Hogan, Cena, Bret, etc).
When Hardy was on top of TNA, TNA was searching for credibility and having a former WWE star gave it to them. Simple as that.
