  • went to a New Years Eve party in a Rosemont hotel, think it was '67, the year i got out of the Marine Corps. Buckinghams, Cryan Shamees, & the Colony Six were there.. had a great time, didn't care about the bands at that time, i was trying to get laid....hehehehehehe

  • Both Recordings of this are Great

    Thank you

    Searchers & Cryan Shames

  • I remember having this album back then. They had some good music. I remember one of the guys in the band had only one hand. Wore a hook on the other arm. I believe they called him JC Hook.

  • anyone in Chicago, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin LOVED these guys. They had a huge following It was always a good time with them. WLS really gave them airplay too. They were a band you had to see and be with to get the full appreciation. they were a party unto themselves. The magic somehow got lost on the recordings for me. Just being there with them live was a high, they loved their fans as much as the fans loved them.

  • Great memories, from Chicago

  • Another Chicago Classic....These guys were great! Thanks!

  • Not only did this song not get the national attention it deserved, but if you listen to the Shames albums, the band definitely deserved better. I think Columbia decided to put all of their money and promotion behind Guercio and the Buckinghams, and the Shames never got the exposure they deserved.

  • @rktbusinc I have the album. It is worth looking for to get in your own collection either as original or a sundazed reprint

  • @rktbusinc --- I think you hit it on the nail. Cryan Shames were shafted by Columbia and could have went alot further if they hadn't put their marketing into the Buckinghams.

  • DENNY CONROY ON DRUMS, MY BRO'S GOOD FRIEND AND OUR NEIGHBOR

  • "Never knew a girl so lovely, sweet enough to want to eat."

  • Some things don"t change

    From someplace in the space/place

  • Nice hearing them again. I knew them at LTJC when they were the Travelers, Grape, Toad, Stonehenge. 3rd floor hall mixers, lounge, those were the days (German with Herr Meyer, huh, Gerry!). Always did love the Chicago sound for those too brief years.

  • As an old '69 highschool grad, I used to love to see these guys around the Chicago area. They sounded as good as any of the bands that were out there, and my old copy of Scratch in the Sky is still a prized possesion. Thanks for posting.

  • J.C. Hooke (original member of the Cryan' Shames) is on Facebook under his real name. Jim Pilster. He loves getting e-mail about the Shames. By the way, they are still playing the Chicago area often. J.C. is the only original member but Tom Doody (Toad) comes in from California for some shows.

  • This was the Searchers song, and I love their version, However, the energy, the type of guitars used and the playing, the harmonies, the arrangement, etc. was a lot better in the Cryan' Shames version. And I am from Chicago, but am not being partial.

  • They were big in the Midwest in the early 60's but the markets were not considered major. Madison, Green Bay, Rockford. They finally hit it big around 65.

  • Great memories. I graduated Naperville HS in 1968, and the 'Shames' were one of the primo groups.

  • Brings back memories of New York City 1965

  • VERY GOOD!

  • Awsome song! How can I forget this diamond,I was a young teenager listening to these new magical sounds in the mid-60's.The British Invasion was at its peak, and Psychedelic sounds were coming over the air waves, What a magical time!

  • @MyJellyJunglein1967 - Right you are - I have shared the films with my children so they can get the feel of those days, which were "magical" indeed. Best Wishes to you.

  • @mjcamck71 The song did not get all the proper air-time it deserved on the West Coast, but then again, every song I heard in 1966 was a number 1 hit

  • The Cryin' Shames sound better and better every passing year. I hope the band knows how much we still enjoy their music.

  • The Shames were so huge in the Chicago area; I'd assumed they were national stars. Then in '67 they competed on some weird TV talent show. Seemed like a bad move.

  • Saw the Cryan' Shames perform this summer in northern Illinois. What a nice group of guys and they're still having so much FUN....

  • Love this track - even better than The Searchers' version. Not much in it though !

That's coming from a Searchers fan of long standing.

  • @weightfeather1 There is an added pivot chord modulation at 1:36 listen to suzy cincinatti by the beachy boys for the same/ one of the videos has nude girls see also the queen of sheba by respigi for a nude girl

  • I agree with you papamac This is, by far,

the best version of the song.

    Thanks for posting!

  • This is just plain gorgeous.

  • @johnnypoker46 YOU GOT THAT JOHNNY P

  • "Sugar and Spice" was the Cryan Shames' first of 7 Billboard charted singles -- debuting 7-23-66 and climbing to a shocking only #49 nationally over a nine-week run. (Despite that, I programmed it into the Reader's Digest "Dedicated To The One I Love" 4 CD box set.) "I Wanna Meet You" charted next in November 1966 -- incredbily peaking at only #85 over a four week run. And those were the group's two biggest national hits! Why both didn't reach #1 nationally astounds me. Both are superb!

  • i saw the shames at my church rec area in 1967 near california and foster

  • I LIKE IT.

  • I lIKE it

  • The BEST version of this song...hands down!

  • They were from my old neighborhood. Their big hit was "I Wanna Meet You", but this was always my fav by them..1966 4ever!

  • The pride of Hinsdale.

  • Summer 1966- great song from a great summer!!

  • I saw them at WARM- day near Wilkes Barre PA in 1966 with my new girlfriend. Great time, great band and great ol' gal 44 years later. I nearly wore out those three albums. One of the greatest bands that few people ever heard of. It was like the secret that a few of us shared over the years. Peace

  • still listen to them everyday since 1966

  • Impressive harmonies on top of everything else. Drums especially appealing. THANKS FOR POSTING. Thanks Cryan' Shames!

  • Thanks for this posting! This is my favorite version of this song.

  • the song sugar and spice, in todays world might inflame many women, but, I love it!

  • aww this is so cute. i wish it was still back then . i love you guys so much. toad , jim pilster, dennis ,and jim fairs. you will never know the effect you had on me. i later played drums in off broadway. i love you guys madley. there has never been a greater band to come out of chicago. best , kh

  • My buddy had the album, we played it alot, really dug it!

  • Just heard this on XM radio on the way home. Had to check for it here. Glad I did. A real lite , lively & enjoyable tune. You Tube pulled through again !!!!!

  • This version was recorded at june - 1966,after of the version of The Searchers ( 1963).

    Regards.

  • @festivae yes there was an album the best of 66 with aretha ,the buckinghams ,the cryan shames, the byrds...

  • @festivae Got to be the 60's. Just heard it on XM and brought back so many memories

  • This is a great version!! I've only heard the Searchers, until just now i read that the Cryan Shames did it, and now I've heard it! I like the subtle differences in the melody, the extra harmony, the key change, the echo/reverb they use....I like it!!!

  • A nugget.

  • Watching these slides while hearing "Sugar & Spice" is like an emotional vacation from all the incredibly ugly pessimistic "music" from so many (not all, thank goodness) of today's pop stars. I have two impressionable teenage children and positive, pleasant life affirming songs like this are the ones I encourage them to listen to. Fortunately, they love 60's & 70's bands. One just went with her dad to see Loggins & Messina. THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT TUNES, Cryan' Shames. Peace & Love Always.

  • Saw them in concert in 1968. They put on a great show. There were just so many great bands and sounds in the 60's that some groups are forgotten. I will never forget them. Thanks Fest for this posting.

  • @newhotman1001 ; saw them at Lane Tech High school (my school) in 68', I think, at the Auditorium there. Great show; they were really good players, owing to all of their club experience.
