  • Great performance but the flow feels wrong. Doesn't do the piece justice.

  • Great sound, but that "beeping" in the background is irritating me :P

  • i hate these youtube comments on performances oh this and this isnt right musically...not like this is an interpretation or something

  • I love this song!!

  • Wow! I didn't know this was up! What a neat memory! As for those that find the tempo too fast, I would say that it seems a refreshing tempo for a song that sinks many times into a lackluster melancholy.

  • So cool! I never knew this was here!!! Either that or I'd forgotten.... Good times! Great memories!

  • you guys make a lovely sound in this large accoustic , but i do think it's too fast , it needs more 'room'

lovely ending , dying away - as it ought

  • the rubati on this feels more like how we did it..though there are times this conductor pushes the rubato too fast. they are also sharp after the first few seconds. great blend, love the diction. great room.

  • VERY good. Your men are awesome.

  • wow!!! this is taken way to fast to enjoy especially after having it heard so emotionally before. This just feels like I'm listening to a c.d skip because it's going so fast.

  • Very good tone and diction, I think it went a bit too fast, though. Take your time with it! Sleep is amazing.

  • especially for the fact that it is in a cathedral. I would have gone well with a quarter of the tempo.

  • you guys are awesome but why speed up the tempo. you guys are the first choir i know who can get those chords out noticably. i love it.

  • I completely agree... The music says Lento; lontano e molto legato. Lento meaning slow and lontano meaning far... I think Whitacre intended this music to sound like a distant, ringing, seamless echo. But this choir sounds sooooo chillingly gorgeous on those tight harmonies! I feel the performers and audience would have enjoyed themselves much more with a more spacious tempo. Either way, they sound wonderful!

  • A beautiful piece in a beautiful building!

  • Holy crap Eddie!!! I didn't realize this was on here and it just popped up and made my day... I freaking miss this choir. One of the best musical moments of my life so far. Thanks for posting it man!

  • hell yeah man...ive been meaning to post more......

  • @loki1983msu So cool! I never knew this was here!!! Either that or I'd forgotten.... Good times! Great memories!

  • I think tempo fluctuaction is appropriate. It allows the piece to breathe, and it well represents the restlessness of the poem's text. Restlessness is key because this poem represents someone fighting and resisting sleep. Something is keeping them awake, whether it be something frightening or something exciting. However, much consideration ought to be given to where it is appropriate to be free with tempo. The important thing is to put thought into it.

  • beautiful! I love love love Eric Whitacre...he makes my heart happy.

  • The sound in this space is fantastic-however, to echo others comments, the tempo has toooo much ebb and flow until the repeated "c" on the word "If" It blossoms beeeeeautifully after that though...goosebumps. By far my favorite song, maybe ever. Definitely my favorite choral.........

  • The temp in the first third bothers me as well. But after that, it fits right in. But even still, beautiful performance! The entire "As I surrender unto sleep" build up was fantastic, as well as the climax where the dissonance resolves for a few brief moments.

  • this was absolutely beautiful. My choir is about to sing this and im cannot wait to start learning it.

  • love the acoustics in that church, you should hear Mozart's Requiem there :)

on the other hand I am more into the version where tempo is not played with this much. a more consistent speed with good dynamics would touch better on the topic of the poem.

  • This made me cry and it sounds SOOO amazing! Great Job!

  • wow. i would absolutely die to be able to sing this in a cathedral like that. i thought i didn't like the tempo at first, but as i keep listening, i really enjoy the movement.

    beautiful!!!

  • Yeahh little fast. Other than that, great sound.

  • THIS WAS AMAZING!!! by far the best i've ever heard it. great job, i agree it was a little fast, it was wonderful.

  • its a little fast. but other than

    that well done. :]

  • I agree BUT you guys sound great!

  • This is the best performance of this song that I have heard so far. The acoustics are amazing. Love it.

  • Hey thanks. Would love to do it again...

  • @jacobcarmack When I saw the title and then Cathedral...I knew it had to be good!

  • i love this songggg

    srsly

  • Tempo feels a bit up, but still incredible, simply incredible

  • HOLY CRUD!!!!!!!! this alone is an amazing piece but u guys do a wonderfully job!!!! the choir im in is soooo blessed to have eric write us a song!!!!!!!!!! we will be opening it in the national convention in oklahoma city in march!!! it will be an amazing expierence!!!!!!!!

  • did you guys change the key of this piece? The climax sounds different than what I'm used to...

  • You guys have a very nice sound! I performed here with my school's choir last summer! How did you guys get to perform this piece? They told us when we arrived that we could not perform any secular pieces!

  • Thanks a lot--I'm not sure about the requisites on secular music at this cathedral or how we surpassed them (if any), but we sang a mixture or sacred and secular songs there without any problem, as far as I know.
