They will find ONE breeder that decided to have too many dogs, and try their best to make it look like a mill, or maybe it is, and then exploit it. They make it seem like puppy mills are then norm, when in reality they're the exception.
You guys believe everything you see on TV? War on terror? Strawberries and Cell phones cause cancer? etc.
you're retarded, PETLAND (the pet store i work at) has MANY AKC dogs, and we don't fucking use puppy mills. The news and press likes to turn things in to something they're not. Out of the thousands of USDA breeders that are site visited once every 6 months, the odds of one out of those thousand NOT becomming a large breeding facility (or techincally, a puppy mill) is very slim.
Poppy is adorable. However, be aware that puppies in pet stores come from puppy mills--unscrupulous breeders in it for the $ and often keep their dogs in very poor conditions. Good breeders never sell to pet stores. They take responsibility for the lives they create and are very picky about who they let have a pup. Pet store puppies are often high priced but very poorly bred with little regard for health, genetic problems, etc.
Well, we were aware of that, and we only went to the pet store so that we could interact with a variety of breeds before contacting a reputable breeder. Alas, we could not leave this little puppy behind.
Totally understandable. It is just sad that every sale of a pet store pup, even by educated, well-meaning people like yourselves, just keeps the market alive. Yet it is so heart-breaking to leave them there, especially knowing someone ignorant of the situation and perhaps not a good owner will just come along and buy them... a true dilemma.
Just FYI, the pet store where I work takes very good care of our puppies (which all come from breeders). We keep them on meds, up to date vaccs and dewormers, inspections from a knowledgable vet, keep them and their kennels clean, and well fed and watered.
That is surprising. I read that no AKC breeders will sell to pet stores. Does your store sell a puppy to anyone who wants to buy it? Do you do home inspections, follow up inspections, anything to ensure that the pups are being well looked after? The good breeders do all that and more, as they feel responsible for the lives they've created.
No, we don't perform any such inspections...but we do refuse to sell puppies to people who are just obviously sketchy (which is admittedly quite rare). The store is independently owned and operated, and it doesn't make much money at all, so the owner basically feels the need to sell to anyone, just to keep in the black (if she even IS in the black). And we've had some AKC-registered puppies in the store for sale before.
I'm not saying I'm absolutely in love with my job or the place where I work; I DO understand the ethics vs. business arguments that come into play when dealing with animals, and I know that we do more than other stores at least in regards to keeping up ethical practices.
