Oh, if I had a dime for every time this happened to my Dad...he'd drag us all out to a railway track to film an excursion or other special and something like this would always happen!
on the coast, yes. no longer run over Tehachapi. after the pipeline was built over the mountain, the trains originated/terminated at Fleta just south of Mojave.
I know why that helper was on there, no thanks to her bearing problems earlier that day at Cajon, still pissed the principal didn't let me go and see her that day either because he thought she went through Sunday!
Not sure. There were 2 different ones on this video. the higher pitched is the fireman's, which was stolen in the early 90's. and the lower is the engineer's quite different than thw one they use now. Personally, I like the current on best!
Damn, that sucks. Wish I could have seen that, though I probably would have been too young to even realise it wasn't just another train. I live about 15 minutes from Sandcut - my dad and I used to go through Bealville up to the Tehachapi loop all the time when I was little, and those long SP tanker trains were pretty much all you'd see, besides piggy-backs. Good times.
Just wondering were you the guy who did the pictorial videos for southern pacific & santa fe? because that scene looks like it came from the espee video....
Last time that oilcan train was run over Tehachapi was in late 1996. The ODOWP/ OWPDO still runs on the Coast Line; occasionally it may detour over Tehachapi (as in early 2005) if the Coast is closed. Even though the 4449 was obscured, it was still a nice meet. =PSH
Sandcut is an excellent site. Filming from the south side of the tracks allows miles of viewing to the east and to the west on a clear day (rare in Kern County). Getting to the north side of the tracks can be risky business ... especially when train's acommin'. Also, it provides a diminished sightline.
well, the good thing is - you got this instead! It's just awesome to watch! Your videos rock! Thanks for sharing them!

The 4449 was on it's way to the 50th anniversary of los angeles union station when this video was shot
trainboy94 4 years ago
you mean coming back from the 50th anniversary of LAUPT right because the oil train had mid-train helpers which means it was heading east

The whistle 4449 was blowing at 00:39 is an SP 5-Chime, which SQUEEKS(!!!) when blown too hard. It was removed from the engine in 1991.
