At these days you could really see the graphic improvement in the games :) From Quake1, Blood, Duke Nukem 3d, Redneck Rampage etc Unreal was a amazing jump in creating big 3d environments. Quake2 had slightly better models but hes engine couldn't handle bigger maps. These days Unreal was most climatic 3d shooter because after finishing labyrinth like dungeon map you often came up into big opened world with pretty environment and awesome soundtrack :) Never seen that in older titles. Epic Game!

@mandigal After playing Wolfenstein 3D for hours on end. DOOM really looks like an improvement. Then after playing that game hours on end. But I like that atmosphere of loniless, and also deeply appreciate the fact that you are alone, nobody tells you there to go, what to do, and nobody goes and shoot with you, like in most modern shooters. U2 lost this feature.

I remember, back in the day, this game came out and it was, to me, as if it was 10 years ahead of the others in terms of graphics. It was so stunning that those guys who were working on Duke Nukem Forever decided to redo their game using the Unreal engine. The first two levels were simply brilliant and movie-like. The universe was so different from what had been made before... It was indeed Unreal. Everybody remembers the first Skaarj attack in the corridor after the lights were shut, right?

Unreal Anthology which includes Unreal, Unreal 2, UT, and UT 04 for only a buck and 99 cents... I bought it right away :) now that is Unreal !

@synaesthetics I would settle for an Unreal Gold Remake using Unreal Engine 3 for the PC, 360 and PS3 with more story maybe and put out a minimum of, say, 3 DLC (Return to Na Pali is included in Gold, so 3 NEW ones) that last a couple of hours each, Epic would have my full respect. MAKE IT HAPPEN GUYS.

Unreal 2 was good but not as good as the original. I found it boring at first but as game progressed it became quite interesting. The end was something I really didn`t expect and I kinda liked it. Too bad there was no story connection to the original except for enemies as some were the same. A new original-like-unreal would definitely rock.

true, unreal 2 wa not a sequel, more a stand alone, which happends to be with a skaarj setting. unreal was good for the nice views, funny weapons, funny enemies.. as a game it was ok. but unreal 1 set the standard very high. and unreal2 cannot compete with it.

i found it stupid btw, that they forgot to build a multiplayer in.. not even vs bots.  ( yes its downloable i know)

Mhm, it was quite epic back then. I mostly admired the landscape and architecture never seen before in such large scale. Quake 2 couldn`t compete with its claustrophobic levels and linear design. A big impression was also the music to which I listen even today sometimes. Weapons were new to the eye but the feedback during shooting was very mild (compared to Q2). It felt like holding a slingshot instead of a gun - no shaking whatsoever.

They didn't forget the multiplayer, but deliberately didn't make one as they wanted it to be a sister product of Unreal Tournament 2003/Unreal Championship 1. Unfortunatetly UT2k3 wasn't great and the singleplayer part of Unreal 2 was forgettable. It wasn't bad and it had some moments (Hell especially was a fun level), but it wasn't Unreal.

@TomozukiII indeed Unreal 2 had the fun parts. (Skaarj in lift, Hell, etc) and had some funny weapons too. (LOL turrets, spidergun, singularity gun) but overall single player was just not it, and multiplayer was a fail. it just doesnt had the Unreal spirit in it.
