Man, I thought this game was going to be off the chain. Blowing up all kinds of shit, playing around with the world and its vending machines and pinball, exploring and saving an alien-invaded open world Las Vegas, that sounded like a crazy time. Instead we got extremely linear level progression, pointless puzzles, very few guns, turret sections, and unfunny jokes. Why did it have to have levels? What would this game have been like in 2001? Guess we'll never know now...

Keep in mind, this was all scripted to make an impressive trailer. At the time they were just concepts the developers had come up with, but were not actually implemented. They didn't know if they were actually going to be able to program them into the game, but it made it look good for a trailer, so they added them to create hype.

If they had released what they had at that time ( I've read that they came to a point where the game actually had a solid substance) they would've been much better off than today, where all the COD , halo, TF2 etc. player are around, most of them not even knowing the duke from the past anymore.

@meroxyersox i can answer that the reason why it turned out shit is the original developers had a dispute and eventually went bankrupt, then the second developer disbanded , then square was developing it but got pushed bk further when they merged to become square enix, the company blew their allocated budget, square enix were asking for ridiculous prices to sell for 4-6 years then they dropped their price down a company called gearbox took and jus changed graphics and is shit by today standards

Love to see how everyone says this was better than this year's release. Come on, guys, face it. First of all, there was no way to make Duke Nukem Forever. Duke Nukem is a game that requires content, and content takes time to get done. Duke 3D took 6 years to be released while games were done in less than a year at that time.

However, delays enrage the community, which pummels the games. Look at Daikatana. It's a good game destroyed by delays and hype.

After buying the rights to Duke Nukem Forever, I can only imagine how everyone at Gearbox reacted when they realized what they got themselves into! If they make a new Duke Nukem title (as opposed to finishing Broussard's mess), I sincerely wish them the best of luck.

The point of playing a game is to have fun. Of course eye candy is important, but not fundamental. The fact that the Unreal Engine 2 on which the game was built resembles so much UE3 we have now is already an awesome achievement. Also, Duke Nukem was never about being realistic at all. It's about being funny.
