I was one of the choristers in this cathedral for 5 years. Trust me, it's the quality of the recording that makes them appear poor. They sound absolutely nothing like that in the flesh.
My point exactly and as someone who knows them your comments really carry some weight. There seem to be a little gang in the ringing fraternity who love to rubbish some peals of bells and think it's big and clever. They'd ask for chips at the Last Supper and say "come on Jesus where's the bloody chips!" Ignore them, they'll be on the Jeremy Kyle show next week, doing what they do best ie showing themselves up!
Incidentally the only time that these didn't sound good were when I was taken up into the tower, stood 10 feet away from the swinging bells as "a treat" and told that under no circumstances should I take my fingers out of my ears until the bells fell silent.
Of course, you tell a 13 year old boy not to do something and he'll do the complete opposite......quite painful, it was.
Wow, they sound shite, Another "waste of time job" by Whitechapel. Lets face facts- you can't polish a turd, even though Whitechapel are the ultimate turd polishers and have manufactured turds themselves
My first quarter on 10 was here, and I liked the bells. They are not great, but neither are they 'sh*te' or 'disgusting' and it's really not nice to say that about anyone's bells, think how offended you might be if someone said that about your own tower?!
People can't face facts. If my home tower's bells were sh*te, I would agree and accept it. The fact is I learned to ring on a fine Taylor 18cwt 8 , Ho Ho Ho, then moved on to ring at magnificent 40cwt Taylor 12. Ho Ho Ho.
I am sure they aren't that bad and the recording is much to blame for the poor noise. It isn't polite to make such inapproriate remarks. Otherwise those geordie boys will give you a good kicking!
I'm quite sure us Yorkshire boys would be quite happy to travel upto Durham to save those Geordie boys a journey. The bells ARE that bad- the last renovation was an excellent opportunity to provide the Cathedral with a magnificent Taylor cast ring is so rightly deserves.

It's working now. Sound quality is poor but good enough for me to put Durham on the 'To visit' list;-)
