BRAVA

  • tebaldi, callas, fleming - Bravo, Maestro!

  • tHIS IS AN ANGEL SINGING

  • Not wishing to seen to be ignorant, can anyone tell me the story of the song, what she is singing about, it's so beutiful to hear this.

  • @johncliffe39 She's leaving home because she refuses to

marry her father's choice...she loves someone else. In this

aria she's singing to her mother that this may be the last

time she ever sees her mother or her home.

  • Soul? The *soul* of the music is present here. Her musical choices-- all of them, phrasing, diminuendo/crescendo, etc.-- are incredible. It's not good enough to sing by the numbers (little marks on the staff). She brings it to life. Love her. Love Fleming. Love Jessye Norman.

  • Bravo Bravo Bravo Renata Tebaldi!

  • do not like her, total lack of soul!!

  • Heartbreakingly beautiful. Truly one of the finest performances of this aria to be heard.

  • Parlo per me e solo per me,LEI E' WALLI'

  • I love Tebaldi - this is excellent for 1969 but I prefer her 1953 performance. I love the tone and phrasing. Callas is intense but vocally erratic. Among others Sutherland and Caballe had greater vocal control for longer periods of time.

  • Awesome singing! TY.

  • Why one must bash Callas to praise Tebaldi (and vice versa) is totally beyond me. They were as different as day and night, and their stage repertories rarely overlapped. Tebaldi had a gorgeous instrument, but could have never undertaken the roles that Callas did (Norma, Medea, Sonnambula, Bolena, Pirata, etc). Callas was able to sing Tebaldi's roles, but was really not suited to them. Tebaldi specialized in early 20th century operas; Callas championed Bellini, Rossini, Donizetti and Verdi.

  • @Zva26 And we were blessed to have both! Who today can hold a candle to those two greats? Urmana? No. Voight? No. Fleming? HELL no!

  • @RVP57 Of course I agree. Both made the 1950's a Golden Age, but they were so different that I cannot see how people compare them. It's apples and oranges. Tebaldi was a spinto who was stylistically suited to early 20th Century opera (Puccini and the verismo composers). Callas, while she could "get away" with these operas, really didn't bother with them. Her focus was on Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini, and Verdi. People who compare them don't really know much about music. Both were great!

  • @Zva26 I remember seeing an old NY Times from the 60s, and reading the Met schedule. In one week at the old Met you could hear Price, Nilsson, Tebaldi, Sutherland, Farrell, Milanov, Merrill, Tucker, Peerce, Corelli, Hines,..those were indeed the days. We're so fortunate now to have these artists available to us at the push of a computer key.

  • @RVP57 - Those days are long gone. We had a Golden Age in the 1960's none of us realized it. Today, if you take away Florez, Kaufman, Fleming, and Radvanovsky, Blythe ---------- you've got NOTNHNG!

  • @Zva26 Get off your lazy and arrogant ass and help support the new and upcoming musicians.

Your kind of bitching is disgusting.

  • @jpstenino - Your manners are so classy, and your post conveys so much more about you than mine do about me. You should be ashamed of yourself. On second thought, you probably aren't intelligent enough be so. Please bother me no further with these posts. They will be deleted before being read.

  • @Zva26 Could not have said it better!

  • renata is just out of this world callas might have had better stage presents but for sheer voice, renata is totely above them all dont care what any body say - amblerificatoin.

  • la mejor de todas....en esta aria

  • How lovely it is. Voices like Tebaldi's are very rare today.

  • As good as Tebaldi is, nothing can equal Callas on this.

  • A tad slow, otherwise, perfect.

  • I like them both, and whether one is better than the other is purely a subjective judgement on the part of the listener. I think we should be grateful to have them chance to listen to both of them and Anna Netrebko as well, although no doubt some people will find fault with this.

  • but I do agree, that here Tebaldi is not on her best...

  • ps. just to remind you of your netrebko comments all the time, mental case that you are

  • hello striker you ah. guess you are as old as Callas an therefor perverted as you are. Cierdo pervertido quien eres.

  • pity, so young an so ignorant yet

  • Tebaldi does have a wonderful, much- loved voice, however I don't think anyone equals that witch Callas on this, or anything else.

  • Bello! O.O

  • I must recognize that my soul is divided between Tebaldi & Callas, they are doing with me a perfect schizophrenic! But anyone knows that Tebaldi had the better voice & Callas the most dramatic, indeed the first do sublimes some arias and the second anothers, that's the truth. This do not mean that Callas hasn't moments of sublime voice and Tebaldo other of sublime expresiveness that also stand up your hair: this aria is a good example.

  • @bruckner4444 there are many other wonderful soprano like grubenova!

  • Yes, you are right: Victoria de los Ángeles, Montserrat Caballé, Sutherland, etc. etc. However, for me is undoubted that Tebaldi & Callas are two supreme artists with a lot of records one may be sure shows perfect versions. Top 1, top 2, top 10, top 100, top 1.000...? The form seems to be conic, or pyramidal...

  • I Tebaldi she is the best ever voice . God given beauty in the voice excellent. I also, like Milanov, Nilsson, Harken, Dimatrova .

    But Tebaldi is the best!

  • i think Tebaldi is complete ! wonderful artist.. i personally prefer her to Callas but they are both GREAT

  • sorry, guess it`s a question of preference. callas in many things is more ádramatic", for sure, often perfect...but she is above all Callas and not the role. Whatever she sings, its her. her own Ego, while other singers, in my opinion put mor sinsibility into it. maybe , just an advice, listen to the different interpretes one after the other and try differenciate. Ok, with kind regards.

  • thats where you are wrong! there have often been times when Famus ppl have said that callas always became the carecter much more so then any outher opera singer, she even has diffrent voices for all her carecters, I thin U need to do more sudying on the matter.

  • @tissetatten what characters did Callas use that wobble that was so big ,we could jump double dutch through it?

  • @tissetatten Come on!!Callas only had a dramatic sense otherwise,she sang like a cow!

  • @monpitt500 -Yes,but what a cow.Great stage presence as well emotion.

  • BRAVA!

    FANTASTIC!

    PERFECT!

THIS IS THE VOICE FOR THIS KIND OF MUSIC...

THIS IS AN ARTIST FOR THIS KIND OF MUSIC with taste and understanding how to sing the true verismo = natural with a powerful full voice never harsh or to sweet ...

    BRAVA!

  • Great performance!

  • The vocal production is flawless, but it makes me long for Callas, in spite of her flaws.

  • Her voice is great, For me this version is better than Callas's.

  • This is very beautiful, and very late for Madame T.. Personally, I prefer the Callas recording. There is also a wonderful recording of this aria by Victoria de los Angeles. That one MAY be my favorite.

  • I totally understand that. In this case I prefer Tebaldi, and her voice is better for this aria, to me. For some other arias and roles, I prefer Callas, so I don't have that determined opinion, Callas is the best, or Tebaldi is the best, it depends on a role they are in.

  • Sheer perfection, and yet I still prefer Callas who was far from perfect.

Mah!!!! Don't try to explain to me the reason! I will never understand it.

  • I agree with you. They are both fabulous. I can't explain it either, but Callas' version makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

  • This is what you could and should call a truly beautiful voice.

  • One of the greatest sopranos of our time. Gorgeous voice! Outstanding musicianship! Everything a singer should have.

  • She sings La Wally so powerful and beautiful... and what a remarkably beautiful woman ... this is one of my favorite La Wally performances

  • You are so right, an extraordinary performance... I never cease to wonder... every time I hear it.

  • Tebaldi is one of my favorite singers. A true spinto soprano. A voice with such richness and depth and she could sing any role to almost perfection. My other favorites, lyric sopranos de los Angeles, Freni, Caballe, dramatic sopranos Flagstad, Milanov, Nilsson, Norman, and a grudging nod to Callas, although I believe her voice is overated in this respect.

  • Callas didn't have most beautiful voice for sure but she knew how to convey passion in music. She is over the top but never annoys me. Stella is also lovely lirico spinto soprano. Definitely an underrated singer.

  • absolutely gorgeous ---the best version of this I've ever heard

  • Wow, so,so beautiful...Love Angelica

  • this is one of my favorite arias EVER

  • This is also going on my funeral music list, it's faultless.

  • Brava! La piu' grande Wally .

    Veramente voce d'Angelo.

  • like moltedo37 i also will have this as my first aria sung at my funeral.i have decieded that the final piece will be the te deum from tosca.....sigh just wish i could be there to hear it.!

  • I totally agree with you :)

  • Excuse you and your workingpoorsingingchoirschool which you try to promote on youtube are the DRECKSCHEISSE from germany you are nothing und das Rohr muss bei Ihnen gepustet werden und zwar bald Herr Amateursinglehrer - apropos Ihre Schule ist LÄCHERLICH und Ihre Vita ist die eines AMATEURS - singen Sie besser auf Rohrreinigungsevents der deutschen Maschinenhysterie

  • bravissima, better than all the new sopranos , only she and Maria and Monserrate are the thrue italian opera divas

  • jep - especially Monserrat who is spanish...

    lol

  • This is one of the most beautiful voices in the Opera.

  • @noncondition No..it´s not..but one of them..:-)

  • I dont care who sings this aria. I have stipulated that when I - me ne andro' lontano - this aria will be mine send off. what a way to go!!!

  • I trust Tebaldi's voice is the best. She is a great musician. No one sings like Tebaldi. I am a student of violin performance and find the best voice--- Tebaldi. Like bible and textbook(sorry...)

    But callas's,

sorry, that is God himself. Many people told me there is no God in the world.

  • Interesting comment. I fell exactly the same. It needs more than beauty to relly move you.

  • Get real, Tebaldi is FAR better, and with a more beautiful voice.

  • to each his own

  • No one sings this like Tebaldi. NO one.

  • Amazing, astonishing, very very very nice, BRAVA RENATA !

  • OMIGOD! I love her, and I love this. Mine is on an old vinyl, worn out. Thank you!

  • voilà un air vraiment ardu à interpréter - bravo

  • ROCK` - N ROLL FEELING FOR ME - excuse! BRAVA! SHE IS ONE OF THE rare Sporanos a WOMEN WHO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SING THIS - HOW IT HAS TO BE SUNG! 1000.000.000.000 Points from my side! BRAAAAAVA!

  • Since your favorites list includes Nancy Sinatra singing "Bang Bang", we'll discount your misguided opinions. Completely.

  • LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!

    Merci Renata.

  • If there is a opera heaven then I am quite sure this performance is there, absolutley superb and flawless.

  • Slow down folks and don't fight. Tebaldi was most famous for her Verismo roles more than Callas was; but this area is so beautiful I like anybody who sings it even Scotto & Lorengar are great in this - here the composer should be given creadit. Catalani's composition and orchetration is superb in his opera. Wished he had written more, lot more.

  • moi j'aime gheorghiu in this aria

  • This makes me cry

  • Tebaldi is better in this aria, her voice is bigger and she sings it with haunting tone like it should be. Get a life.

Ricciarelli is past her prime and her voice is weak.

  • I think you are very correct. It is here that Callas and Swartzkopf scores. But her voice is otherwise so angelic!

  • You are silly human, but very happy, because I don't see you and don't know you. You shall never dare to tell me these poor words tet a tet If you don' t whant me to make your face more beautifull poor guy!!!

  • Please learn something about voice types. Tebaldi belongs to a quite unusual category known as the "lirico-spinto". A counterpart to her voice range would be Schwarzkopf in the German repertoire. Take a look at her home page and see her reasoning about repertoire, which might teach you a great deal. And finally, this is a solid verismo role and one of the last that Tebaldi took on, magnificently. There can be no finer interpretation of this aria.

  • I think Renee Fleming gives her a decent run for the money....

  • Un personaje perfecto para Tebaldi.

  • This is the most beautiful and dramatic version of this opera I have ever heard, and I have heard many.

  • This is lovely. Thank you for posting it.

We are lucky to have so many wonderful artists represented here on YouTube. Their recorded performances, thank goodness, will continue to give pleasure.

  • C'est nul. Je préfère Maria Callas !!!

  • Je prefere Tebaldi, she is more touching in this aria, Callas is only ok. She does not have the warm of the Great Tebaldi.

  • callas was a FORCE of nature for about 10 years. the vocal decline she suffered was a risk she took on for singing ALL the repitoire that she COULD sing!! she was a phenom!! her technique was "genius"! tebaldi's technique was not as secured but she got away with all of her flaws because the voice was GORGEOUS!!!!! thats it!!! they are both GEMS! i happen to like tebaldi but they are both GREAT!! the bitch has spoken!! let me know if anyone needs any more GENIUS INFO.

  • First of everything, Callas voice was NOT very large, definitely, and Callas voice was too flawed, so to speak of Callas a FORCE of nature and great technique is only fiction

  • How can you diss Tebaldi? she is a GEM, singers only stive to have half the sound her lovely voice produces, I have seen all kinds of sopranos sing this, and i feel a bigger weightier voice does this aria better justice! Viva La Tebaldi!

  • Beautiful line and phrasing. It sounds effortless and without all the excessive histrionics that some divas indulge in.

  • Callas was full of flaws, wobbly high Cs, ugly screaming voice, horrendous technique that cracked most of the time, let's not mention her monotonous high notes, unlike sutherland's ringing ones. hmmm let's see what else?

she lost her e-flat in 1955, she produced bizarre sounds in many coloratura passages (example: the Ah! si in saprgi d'amaro that became hooo! si) and they call her "la divina", and a dramatic

  • Operacollector, you couldn't have listened to Maria Callas's rendition of this aria on You Tube - so beautiful and so moving. Tebaldi has gentle melancholy; Callas has sorrowful passion, yet is delicate and fragile at the same time, with pure high notes.

    the You Tube rendition

  • I think you need to ignore anyone who says Maria Callas couldn't sing - that's just silly! - that's like saying Da Vinci couldn't paint - fair enoughj you don't like her singing that's up to you but to claim she had a poor voice is just silly

  • I totally agree with your comment. It is also true that some artists do very well with certain arias and operas. In order for any singer to be recognized, they have studied for so many years.

  • i didn`t tebaldi enjoy particularly, but this aria was song wonderfully of her.

  • Stupidity. You have no idea of what the voice must be

  • This aria brings out magical qualities in so many sopranos, each of whom displays her individual beauty through its unforgettable melody.

  • beautiful

  • For those of us who are in our upper 40's or older, Renata Tebaldi was one of the sopranos who made opera LIVE for us, because, for them OPERA MATTERED, and they did indeed used their energy and their talent to the max EVERY NIGHT to project that opera to us. This Tebaldi recording is a case in point: every time I watch "Diva," I have to cleanse my palate afterwards with Tebaldi singing this aria PROPERLY; she KNOWS what she is singing about!!! Thank you very much for posting this!!!!!

  • HAHAHAHA

  • I think Tebaldi does more with this aria than most singers (and those mentioned already are wonderful). The opera itself is an uneven work that doesn't work on stage well at all. I am thankful Tebaldi recorded it. At least it works in the studio.

  • Tebaldi is perfect for this aria, it is better than

Ricciarelli - she has more feeling in her voice. You could detect the sadness in her voice as it should be.

    GREAT INTERPREATION.

  • I think you are a stupid person - Tebaldi is a great singer like Callas - Also Tebaldi was beautiful woman.

You are a laughable person yourself. You are retarted.

  • You're an IDIOT!!!

  • sandrik100 and baritolo

You are both acting like brats and need time outs. Your discourse would be rejected by a comic book.

  • I think she is perfect for this role. Other singers with voices like hers are fine as well.

  • sounds like apples and oranges to me..

  • Miss Tebaldi's legato and phrasing are elegant. She sings from her heart, not for effect.

  • She's the best at this song!!!!!!

she sings with a lot emotions~I love it!!!

  • johi613 - i agree with you she sings with great emotions also her voice is sad as it should be.

    It is very haunting.

  • Of cource Tebaldi was greatest Diva, But I prefear Ricciarelli.

  • Tebaldi was wonderful, I like her voice, but between Ricciarelli and Freni...I prefer Raina Kabaivanska....without any doubt...

  • Very nice. So what's the story about? Man, I do love opera; it makes me feel so superior to other people when I leave the Opera House in Amsterdam!

  • Tebaldi is better - she is more touching also a greater voice.

  • Riccarelli is far more better!!!

  • Where did you loose your mind? Ricciarelli is a bad, poor, small imitation of Renata.

  • You are dangerous for melodram and music in general. Listen to me, stop to post comments about artists you don't know.

  • I have to agree Riccarelli is better. By the way she is a cousin of Pavarotti...a bit of useless info!!

  • No no no, Tebaldi is superb, Riccarelli is good but not as elegant as Tebladi, that´s why the rivality between Callas and Tebladi, Tebaldi was gentle, kind, and Callas was totally undiplomatic, so imagine the how great Tebaldi was that she as the only calla's rival

  • I fell in love with this aria when I was 15 not knowing what the words meant. Tebaldi's voice, her artistry were true.

  • I saw Tebaldi at the Old Met Opera House in NYC

many times and no other singer ever moved me to tears

like she did. Another singer I loved who is still

alive is Lucine Amara who sang many performances at

the Met but never became an international star.

  • I menat haunting. Sorry.

  • I think she sings with a lot emotions. She sing it sadly as it should be. Her singing is quite hunting.

    Great interpreation,

  • Although I wish that she sang with a bit more emotion, but this is brilliant. Beautiful voice.

  • What an artist! No need to punch every note, no screaming. Voice alone tells you everything. This IS belcanto.

  • Barabanych you stated it better than I Could have. This singing is just perfect.

  • The best version, great legato, she is very touching.

Voice is so firm and well controlled. Simply the BEST.

  • Best version of this aria.

  • Absolute Greatness.

  • The right conductor Fausto Cleva the wrong orchestra.

It is Orchestre National de l'opera de Monte-Carlo.

    Beautiful version of this aria.
