The kanas are the basic "alphabet" letters in japanese, but to write IN japanese you may use hiragana, hiragana is like cursive letters, the katakana writing is for foreign names and words, example:

hiragana: あ Katakana: ア

both sound "a" like in spanish. Sometimes, if you combine some hiragana you can form kanji like:

あめ/ 雨. means "Rain", the first two sounds "ame" and so the third, the third is the combination of the previous two, it's kinda confusing, and it's polioman btw. :)
