Follow behind a truck on any Interstate in slow traffic.That black diesel smoke that you're breathing contains nitrous oxide, hydrocarbons, nitromethanne, carbon monoxide and ozone among other things. Not only do these fumes poison our lungs, they poison the atmosphere. Why aren't these smoker vigilantes yelling for stricter mandates on the emissions of these trucks instead of harassing someone that's standing 10 feet away holding a cigarette?

Too little is talked about benefits of smoking. Its cool. It makes you feel cool even if no one is there to see. It relaxes you a little bit. You are part of smokers secret society and everyone who smokes is your friend. You have something to hold in your hands. You have excuse to hang outside. It saves trillions in pensions. It generates lot of tax revenues. Healthcare costs but everyone needs healthcare eventually. I highly recommend smoking. I smoke about a pack a year.

Freedom is having CHOICE! If I choose to smoke, I pay the taxes to the gov & Im fine with that. If I choose to NOT smoke, I pay no taxes to gov & Im fine with that. If I choose to be around smoke in public, or not, Im fine with that. Im NOT fine with the gov taking my choices away! Let those who pollute the air pay more tax such as those who own cars/drive, pay more tax $ , but DO NOT allow the gov to TAKE & MAKE your choices for you. Second hand smoking is also as equally as dangerous as first hand smoke; actually worse, because the smoke is not filtered. You talk of freedom and mention human rights. You must realize when it comes to negatively affecting others, any freedom is banned by the law. In fact, this is how all laws are legislated.

@afuckingbadass: I thought the same thing age 20 when I started, it was a nice way to relax. But that's the trick. Soon you'll find it's addictive. Stop for one day now and you'll see. Everything seems wrong and you will be easily angered. You'll probably be singing a different tune in the next 5 to 10 years when smoking actually causes stress trying to find a place to smoke or not being able to go smoke. It causes severe inconviniences. Good luck when the time comes to quitting!

I've been smoking since 2002 at age 20. Stopped in 2007 using the patch, then again 2009 from January til July. Back at it though. Need to stop soon going into the AirForce. I think their should be a ban on cirgarettes specifically and do it at an birth year like persons born 2001 and forward cannot purchase cigarettes. These things are bad, terribly bad!!! The addiction is terrible!!

couldn't agree more. claims for passive smoking were started off by Claims Direct. They got people on benefits to claim for anything and everything in the UK fraudulently. All the smoking ban has done is cause hundreds of pubs in the UK to go out of business. After the smoking ban the Government doubled the price of cigarette tax to make up the amount they lost. We can't even buy cheap cigarettes in EU countries as the UK loses tax! Reverse the smoking ban - give people a choice.

And the irony is that smoking limits your life expectancy. You don't suddenly die from smoking, it's a just an accelerator and a limiter on life. So maybe you're living life by relaxing, but you won't live it longer than a nonsmoker. This is assuming that smoke heavily and not just 1 cig a day. For all I know, you could even more fit than the average person.

You could get hit by a car! Would people say that was caused by smoking! Not everyone is the same, so it can't be proved that smoking limits life. Old people now were exposed to chemicals and asbestos years ago but it's more convenient to blame smoking. It stops UK industry being sued out of existance.

Because putting a limiter on life is not the smartest thing to do if you're wanting to live your life. Placing a ban on public smoking is perfectly fine is the constituents find that it is necessary. Why? Because I subscribe to the "share the air" idea that we all drive, we all put up with pollution, we all do not smoke, put out that cigarette. Now, I do not advocate the government's limit on your freedom to smoke, but a deterrent by the people is not terrible.

Because we should not have to drive 50 miles to go to a non smoking bar or restaurant. If you want to smoke, why don't you drive to Mexico where its legal? OR JUST MOVE THEIR. I'm glad that there are less places to light up.

I quit like 7 or 8 years ago when my right lung was always in pain. Within a week everything was better. I can exercise and not out of wind.

I feel for smokers who are of course going to feel picked on, but in all honesty. You don't have any right to hurt my body.

I am a smoker. I live in KY. My family raised tobacco for generations. Smoking is banned in the city I live in, but do I have a problem with it? Not so much for myself. Even as a smoker I would rather not be in a cloud of it all the time. But my rights as a smoker and yours as a non smoker are not the issue. It should be the right of a business owner to discern if they want to allow it in their establishment. If b/c they do they lose your business thats on them, but they should choose not you.

If you have a resturant and you don't have a handicap restroom, that is discrimination against the disabled. If a person with asthma can not eat in your restiurant, because you allow smoking, that is also discrimination. People with asthma should not have to get someone to shop for them because a food store allows smoking. The non smokers are not complaining like the smokers, if they were, business would lose 75% of their business as 75% of Americans do not smoke.

I never said I opposed the ban from a smokers standpoint. I remember when the ban was imposed here originally, business owners were complaining b/c of decreased sales(mostly bars). My boss's son has a deadly allergy to peanuts. He cannot eat at steakhouses that allow peanut shells to be thrown on the floor. Is that not the same discrimination? Do we ban peanuts in restaurants? Still a business owners decision not yours.
