Sure it was. Like you're telling me something I didn't know? Like I said, it's from the film 'The Squid and the Whale'. I don't know why you'd take issue with that statement of fact. Jeeze.
I first heard this song at a Loudon concert at the Regents Park Open Air Theatre (in London). He played it on a banjo and as he started the intro a soft gasp went across the audience at its beauty.
He has written some sublime songs but somehow has been under-rated and, I think, not least, by himself. I heard the song about his grandfather, the FIRST Loudon, who could "handle a shot-gun"; a marvellous sad sweet song.
Loudon is and always will be moving and compelling.
Just heard this for the first time on CBC radio. Would've loved to have seen a band version with banjo. Still, what a great blooy tune. Can't get it outta me head now.
It´s been twenty years since I last heard this song. Just remembered the melody and the opening lines. Good to hear it again. Loudon Wainwright is great. Thanks for posting this one
Nice to see videos of Loudon Wainwright 111, he's a great singer/guitarist and writer, I first heard this song from folksinger Nic Jones and see now why he chose it.One of many great songs of Loudons. Thanks for posting it dannygreene.
One of my favourite books - Waterlog by Roger Deakin - opens with the lyrics of this song. I hadn't heard the song until now. I can see why he used it!
It's an awesome book. The author spent a year swimming in as many different bodies of water up and down Britain as he could. Sounds dull but trust me, it's great :)
It's an colloquial Australian manner of speech to put the preposition "but" at the end of a sentence especially where the sentence is a continuation of a topic. but slightly contrarian.
Thuis one might say "Some ingredients of a Christmas pudding like suet are pretty yucky." to which someone might respond "Tastes good, but."
The inimitable Loudon. Check out the version of this rollicking classic on the live "career moves" album. Wag that tongue! Swimming is fun. Metaphor-free zone.

I also loved the girlish, almost frail-sounding cover version by his then-wife, Kate McGarrigle and her sister Anna on their mid-'70s debut album

Should check out the vetiver version. Has the banjo your craving.

Thanks, I'll have to have a look, though I haven't a clue what "vetiver" might be.
