I agree and I see it as political. The 80's would have been prime time for the upheaval and revolt of the people against the devastatingly conservative government at that time. So much was happening, yet all we remember of the 1980s (or what's shown) are the trends and pop culture.

Even as you stated that it's a economic issue, that still sites the political influence on the economy. Financial exploiotation is encouraged by multinational coporations and the music industry is no exception.
