It hasn't been very clear why he was there but the best knowledge says that he became earths' guardian at the time and fell in love with a human woman. He would already have a gigai. He definitely was a squad captain before he left the soul society. Wish I knew which squad!

Then he returned to earth because he wanted to be with his girl, and probably caused a big uproar in soul society because of it. I'm not exactly sure if you have to be dead, because the people in Soul Society can also give birth meaning the baby didn't die first because it didn't exist yet.

It was definately payback, even if Isshin didn't know it. In the rescue arc early on into bleach, Aizen stopped Ichigos bankai blade with 1 finger, then tapped the blade and sent a shockwave that nearly severed him in half :P

I hope in the next arc after the fullbringer arc they do something on Isshin's past. I bet his story was like he came to the living world on a mission and met Uryuu Ishida's Dad and some powerful enemy came and he used his own Final getsuga tenshio and lost his powers then slowly after meeting Ichigo's mom his powers slowly came back.

@bursky09 you don't seem to get it. If Ichigo hadn't defeated him, the Hougyoku wouldn't have allowed the seal to take effect. The seal only took effect because the Hougyoku permitted it, hence Aizen was defeated. He may have been alive at that point, but he would have had no more power than Ichigo did.

Seal or no seal, he was done.
