@z0mgrugbyreturns. Todays players have interchange. It's pretty easy to take a heavy knock and get subbed and come back on later. 1986,with only 2 fresh off the bench, you had tot ough it out. Ps, Leadbetter was 110kg, Bundy 105kg, Eric Grothe snr would rip nrl 2011 to shreds.
i wish rugby league was like this again now its so soft now if you slap a player in the head in a tackle its a high tackle back in the 80's we see blokes throwing fist at heads
@aussielad83 Mate, are you daft? There's less steroids in professional sport than there's ever been! That stuff was rife up to the 90's, there wasn't enough technology and scientific understanding to catch people out.
Just because players today are professionals with the time to train in the gym doesn't mean they're on steroids. Use a bit of common sense. If you loved the game you wouldn't try to shame it with bullshit accusations of steroid abuse.
@aussielad83 Ultimately these guys are no tougher than anyone playing today. They played by the rules and accepted interpretations of the time. If reffing was as lax today as it was in the 80's you'd see 5 people being stretchered off a game, such is the physical superiority of todays guys.
Smaller guys are faster, but half these supposed fast blokes wouldn't be fast by todays standards. They'd all be George Rose slow, without the size and ability to intimidate.
@aussielad83 It's not about respect for elders, it's about fact. Big man beats a small man. These guys were tough as nails but were all little by todays standards, they'd be physically dominated -- in a game or a brawl.
Whether they made the sport or not. They'd get their arses kicked by the blokes playing today, and anyone suggesting otherwise is senile.
You could put some piss weak bloke like Creagh in a time machine and he'd bully most of the hardmen of the 80s.
grew up playing footy in the 80's...fuck i dont know how i survived...now i show my 2 sons what it was like in the 'old days' and they just freak out!!..........the game has gone soft...thats a fact!!!
Outstanding! To quote the great Rex Mossop, "How wonderful to see two big men going hammer and tongs." They get it out of their system then settle down to play great footy. I thank my lucky stars every day that i grew up during this era.
How is it Sterlo and only Sterlo got binned? ..."theres headbutting, theres knees..." but Sterlo went! Goes to prove the refs in the good ol days couldn't get it right either.
they were pretty tough in the 80s....none of the gel haired poofs that are in the NRL today would have lasted 5 minutes against the likes of Dallas Donnelly, Craig Young or Les Davidson
@z0mgrugbyreturns I disagree. Sonny Bill would piss in his pants if he had to go one on one with Boondy Davidson. Adrian Morley would prefer to play on the wing than pack down against Blocka and Willy Mason would go 6 shades of white if Peter Kelly pulled him on. Physics don't compare with the heart required to play in these days.
@tillyadams There's nothing to disagree about. A big guy beats a small guy almost every time. These unathletic guys wouldn't last one second in a fight today.
It's the same in every sport when you look at old fights, none of the guys have any idea how to fight. They throw punches like girls.
You pensioners need to accept it wasn't better in your day. It was a pseudo-sport for pissheads.
@z0mgrugbyreturns Wouldn t they now???? They played for 80 mins in the 80s unlike like today, scrums were a real contest and the players got away with a lot more biff than they do today.Only fast because of the constant rests they get today
@lapalad So what? They were still little guys, pseudo-athletes at best.
It's like saying boxers back in the day were better because they went 20 rounds in the sun and fought with less padded gloves. Doesn't mean anything. They'd still get smashed by the physically superior boxers of today.
You old guys are just in denial. My generation is bigger and stronger than yours ever was. This is science fact.
@z0mgrugbyreturns Have you seen the current crop of heavyweight boxers? They are a joke and wouldn t be good enough to lace the boots of an Ali,Louis or Frasier
@z0mgrugbyreturns You are fucken kidding. Although the current NRL blokes are bigger and more athletic than the older generation, half of them couldn't knock the skin of a rice custard. They would have done more damage hitting each other with their handbags in that stink at Brookvale between Manly & Storm. Lunatics like Les Davidson, Craig Young or even Tom Raudonikis would have punched, kicked and gouged six kinds of shit out of all of them. They had way more pump in the 80s.
@TheParratwoblues None of the punches in the Manly brawl even connected, so how can you say that?
And bullshit to you. Most League players today are trained in MMA fighting and all sorts. They'd fucking savage the little unfit midgets of old. Get real old man.
A fucking cat like Jamal Idris would have beat up Tommy if he was around back then.
@TheParratwoblues The most common hairstyle in the NRL is the short back and sides. Probably the most "macho" haircut in the world if there is such a thing(there isn't).
People in the 80's used to rock mullets and didn't know what a clipper was!
I swear some of you blokes are insane with the crap you come out with.
Yeah I remember that too.Kelly was wearing headgear and Bundy knocked it off with the sweetest uppercut .I also remember him giving Peter Cullum from Manly an absolute flogging at Brooky back in 86.Cullum was in the paper the next day with 2 black eyes.Aaaah the good old days...
@Roddirat the fight with Cullum and Davidson is on youtube. Two beautiful righthands from Les after Callum started it with a pussy backhand right. Only thing stopping further massacre was fatty coming in and grabbing Boondy's arm
Bundy probably got the best right hand in I think but he did look stunned from a temple shot. You are right though, noone ever got the better of Bundy. Him and Blocka stood toe to toe in 87 and was very even and he got the better of Peter Kelly, Martin Bella and Jason Stevens. If anyone has his blue with Blocka can you please upload
I think that`s about the best anyone did up against Les. Wouldn`t have minded seeing him going toe to toe with Tallis. They probably will too, if they bump into each other after 17 schooners. Or without.
Couldn't agree more with you Tim! I'm almost certain that there wasn't a single player from this game even cited for foul play...however, Craig Coleman actually did get sent off late in this match for verbally abusing the referee.

Parramatta 12 (Steve Ella, Paul Taylor tries; Mick Cronin, Ella goals) drew with South Sydney 12 (Michael Pobjie try; Neil Baker 4 goals).
If Sterling got ten in the sin bin, why then did Price and Terry Leabeater, who started it, not get sent off?

Absolute nonsense. I'd take any current NRL team in a fight against a team from the 80s.
These old teams wouldn't last a minute against the profound athletes and physical freaks playing in the NRL now.
Too big and too fast for the last generation. Basic physics.

@lapalad Fairpoint but you ignore logic and science. A good big man will beat a good small man.
There's a reason sports like boxing, mma etc have WEIGHT DIVISIONS. These little fellas from previous generations would get slapped today.
