@2IDSGT The LCSs are not blue water ships and you would be suprised how much damage the small ships can take. We had destroyers in WWII that took more kamakazi hits than carriers and survive while the carrier sunk. With the Stark, not only was the design tough, so were the damage control and fire fighting teams.
@Robbob9933 Compare the basic crew complements of the Perrys and the LCS (as in the number of actual sailors on board), then take a wild guess as to which stands the best chance of staying afloat after taking two Exocet missiles.
@2IDSGT Most world navies consist of a couple missile patrol boats. From the recent activity in Libya to Gulf War 1 and 2, these small craft turned out to be tough buggers. One Iraqi boat took four harpoons (slower but more lethal than exocet) and would not sink. A Libyan boat took three, the third used the pop up attack mode to carry the explosive force through the hull bottom. In WWII The USS Laffey survived 4 bombs and 6 Kamakazi hits, it is ~size of LCS-1.
@Robbob9933 The USS Laffey was a Sumner-class DD with over 300 crewmen that was designed to take 1 or 2 hits. Seeing as neither class of LCS is being required to meet normal shock testing standards, you'll have to forgive me for doubting that a tiny 40-man crew can control damage from multiple ASM hits.
@2IDSGT I mentioned the Laffey because the physical demensions and dispalcement are very close to LCS-1. Also as a example of what smaller ships could take and still keep fighting. The bomb hits were 1,000 lb and the Kamakazi hits were 10,000 lbs of plane, 2,000 lb bomb, with remaining fuel hitting at close to 500mph in dive. The LCS would never sail into harms way with only the base crew. Augmentation package available would take it to full DDG(ASW) with total crew close to 300.
@Robbob9933 Augmentation for 300? Where the hell did you read that? That's almost the complement of a Burke-class. In any case, the LCS is an orphaned concept; it was supposed to be part of a larger system that included a new generation of ships (CG-X, DDG-X). That program has long since collapsed (only building 2-3 Zuwalts), and since we're stuck with Burke for the foreseeable future, a light-frigate that actually has weapons would be better.
@2IDSGT There was a 4 show series on the LCS on National Geographic. Augmentation packages were built for slide in and out. This concept was taken from how cruise ship cabins are installed. Anything aft of the bridge and above the machinery spaces can be reconfigured modularly. Using traditional nomenclature for ship class vs mission, the LSC would ba classsified as a corvette and an under gunned one at that.
Lost a shipmate at the end of July, L. Mark Bareford who served onboard and was a USS Stark Survivor. He was Burn over 20% of his body during this attack. He received a purple heart for it
I was on the Stark. It was my first ship. I traded duty stations 2 days before it went on that deployment. We are in Washington DC and our first stop will be Arlington to pay respects to my lost shipmates.
My dad was on the Stark, luckily not when it was hit but he was supposed to have been. I was born the following day.. He lost a lot of friends on the Stark. It's always a happy/sad time of year. My condolences to all the men and their families affected by this tragedy.
Thanks For This. I was in "C" School for the MK92 FCS for this class of ship when this happen and it hurt like hell. We had one Senior Chief who had just left the Stark. I Knew one of the Fire Controlmen and who died and served with another who was badly injured but return to duty in 1990. I also served with another survivor who was not injured but would not talk about it . All I say is this song was very fitting for all of their memories and I was proud to server with all. Again Thanks
@nicholeari112 im sorry to hear that. i was an airdale stationed over at cecil field and met some stark crew just before they made that deployment. another friend lost his child and gal, from the guy that flipped out when stark made it back home. he was on a 6mo deployment when he got that message. i aint forgot about your dad or the rest of the crew. keep the faith, do good things.
USS Mahan DDG 42 was in the yards when this happened.Later that year,I was going through USS Buttercup DC training & stories about guys crawling underneath the forward magazines to shut off fuel valves were being told. The training works but it sucks when your shipmates don't come home with you from a cruise.
I see my friends name in the right hand column. FC1 Tweady. For some reason I thought he was an FCC at the time. We taught C-school together at Mare Is. Great guy, still hard to believe.
i Remember that day i was sitting in the living room first thing i said i hope noboby i know was on that ship seconds later they put the photo of Christopher DeAngelis, electronics technician, 23, i was in shock we went to boot camp together he was 1st Platoon leader i was ARCPO Nice guy never will be forgotton Co. 252 Div 12 Great Lakes 9/02/82---10/29/82
This was my second ship and I lost 37 shipmates, friends and heros the night of 17 May,1987. Please do not forget that there are young service men and women out there today helping to keep us safe and free. I salute those who have served and those that are serving today. And for those willing to serve I would shake your hand and tell you to always remember those who have gone before you. JD

Tough little ship. I doubt the LCS will be able to survive that kind of damage.

I lost my brother on the U.S.S. Stark FFG-31on that day (May 17, 1987). I will never forget!!!
My brother and three of his shipmates are buried in Arlington Cemetery in Washington D.C., Section 60:
Christopher DeAngelis, John Ciletta, Steven Erwin, Earl "Pat" Ryals.
I still miss him even after 23 years. I love you Pat.
