@exgreloads Last time the Russians overwhelmed their enemies was WW2. Their ground forces is actually considerably smaller than the US Army - just 300,000 as opposed to a little over 500,000, respectively. BTW - the US forces in the 2003 invasion of Iraq was actually much smaller than the Iraqi military.

compounds have been entered with the enemy inside, its always good to have the bayonet fixed incase the soldiers weapon jam's, they are also used to make sure the enemy is actually dead and not just playing dead, Usually the Grenade does the job, but troops cant always go "red" on every compound due to risk of civilian casutalies.
@pimptastic666 I'm in the US Army and we are not even issued bayonets even more... i don't know why. As much as i like being in the US Army it is going to shit. The bayonet is a very effective weapon... its all good blowin the shit out of a compound, but it's always better to go in after and make sure! its clear. and that bayonet is an excellent back up if its needed. it takes a real man to look at your enemy face to face while takin his life

@pimptastic666 Yeah, the bayonets used on the SA80's are effective and all, but I never got why they're so short.. In WWI they had 18 inch bayonets, now they're tiny. The SA80 also has a shorter length than the old Lee Enfield (Because of it's bullpup design) So that decreases the range of the bayonets even more!
@schmoo1507 I think it's because shorter bayonets work better in close-quarters combat? I wouldn't want to carry around a 18-inch bayonet mounted on an assault rifle. Lee Enfields would be appalling to use in CQC, yet alone urban combat unless it's for long-ranged shooting.
@SniffyAndWelly Close quarter battles, I believe. The smaller they are, they're also a lot more maneuverable and less cumbersome to carry around with.

I'm guessing majority of them were unable to use their bayonets in Afghanistan b/c due to far range combat, but im guessing when the U.S./Nato invaded Iraq, there were close combat fighting, like when they go into homes and such, and they were able to use bayonets.
As for the bayonet charges like they did back in WWI, they dont do that anymore.
@SushiSounds Actually I know a bloke that was there in helmand and those taliban are not to underestimated I heard that they got pretty close and they had to fix bayonets and it was intense. It is hell he also learnt that walking in your comrades footsteps is the norm because of the risk of IED's. Afghanistan is real our boys are fighting for real including with bayonets.

@theslothface i watched a documentary recently where British soldiers discussed how they felt about killing and and one guy on there, capt. Doug Beatie described a time where he used his bayonet to kill one of the taliban when he entered a room, so yeah bayonets are used quite regular out in Afghanistan, especially when the men are clearing compounds the fighting can be pretty much 'in your face'
This is a particularly good video. The music and pictures show Afghanistan for what it really is i.e. A bloody dangerous place and that our soldiers are dealing with some very difficult situations.

@pimptastic666 Yeah, the bayonets used on the SA80's are effective and all, but I never got why they're so short.. In WWI they had 18 inch bayonets, now they're tiny. The SA80 also has a shorter length than the old Lee Enfield (Because of it's bullpup design) So that decreases the range of the bayonets even more!

@schmoo1507 I think it's because shorter bayonets work better in close-quarters combat? I wouldn't want to carry around a 18-inch bayonet mounted on an assault rifle. Lee Enfields would be appalling to use in CQC, yet alone urban combat unless it's for long-ranged shooting.

@SniffyAndWelly Close quarter battles, I believe. The smaller they are, they're also a lot more maneuverable and less cumbersome to carry around with.

@SuperBomber01 Exactly, I would not want to carry a long bloody thing in my webbing, the bayonet frog I was forced to use was annoying enough with the bayonet we have. Its a frightening tool, and if you ever have to fix it you know its going to be a bad day.

Yes they do fix bayonets because sometimes the taliban get close too close like coming over the walls at night. Thats real I heard it from a real soldier. See it in the pictures here they wouldnt fix the bayonet for no reason.

I'm guessing majority of them were unable to use their bayonets in Afghanistan b/c due to far range combat, but im guessing when the U.S./Nato invaded Iraq, there were close combat fighting, like when they go into homes and such, and they were able to use bayonets.
As for the bayonet charges like they did back in WWI, they dont do that anymore.

@SushiSounds Actually I know a bloke that was there in helmand and those taliban are not to underestimated I heard that they got pretty close and they had to fix bayonets and it was intense. It is hell he also learnt that walking in your comrades footsteps is the norm because of the risk of IED's. Afghanistan is real our boys are fighting for real including with bayonets.

@theslothface I've been told by guys that serve that Bayonetes have been used alot due to the close quarter fighting within buildings and compounds.
Also nothing scares the enemy more than fixing bayonettes. Getting shot doesn't seem so bad compared to being run through with a knife.

@theslothface i watched a documentary recently where British soldiers discussed how they felt about killing and and one guy on there, capt. Doug Beatie described a time where he used his bayonet to kill one of the taliban when he entered a room, so yeah bayonets are used quite regular out in Afghanistan, especially when the men are clearing compounds the fighting can be pretty much 'in your face'

This is a particularly good video. The music and pictures show Afghanistan for what it really is i.e. A bloody dangerous place and that our soldiers are dealing with some very difficult situations.

@CoffeeBeatsTea just saying to swisstony there's no thing as our soldiers, you are of course aware of the fact that Switzerland was, is and/or will never be involved in whateverstan or that kind of lies and deception (aka bullshit), Switzerland is however involved in many peace keeping mission, but mostly just with observers, except the case of Swisscoy which has an entire "army" company in Kosovo within the KFOR (In my modest opinion we shouldn't even be in the UN moneysucking usless crap)
