Yep. Chris nailed it. The people we now refer to as 'birthers' early on tried to deny Obama's presidency.

They said he was not President because of some improper wording during the inauguration. They kept latching on to idea after idea as to why he wasn't REALLY the President. Finally they settled on the birth certificate issue. It sure SEEMED like maybe they were having trouble accepting a black President.
