With the hassle of flying and the cost of kerosene, trains have a bright future particularly when they ll really reach plane speed. I know that the French have a project for a super high speed train that will basically be in magnetic levitation inside of an airproof pipe with commercial speed well over the sound barrier.
from Brussels to Paris on the motorway , you get very close to the track, which is going parallel. ( in the Douai region )I was doing 95-100mph in my Megane , thought I was trucking .Then ther eis a phantom shadow in your rearview mrror and suddenly you are overtaken by this rocket. Plus the passengers on board can order steak frites .
Guys, does this sound like a good idea? Instead of using the old fashioned 2 rails, they should add tube railings instead. One tube on the bottom, and one on each side. Voila. Train can't tip over and can go the experimental speeds for commercial use.
@kzalldaz It's been done, but it turned out to be inferior as it isn't compatible with the conventional rail network obviously, "tipping over" wasn't anywhere near the top 100 problems that they were worried about when making High Speed Trains, and it gathered more friction and thus was less efficient. A German inventor tried it over 100 years ago, it went nowhere.
BTW, on standard conditions, tracks are inspected daily (or so) by half-automatic machines. And the driver must observe the right speed for the right track portion, otherwise the engine shuts down.
The TGV is designed as a one-piece rigid structure thanks to the boogies (one boggie for two cars), so if the train goes out of track, it will jump out as a stick first cars protecting others, and not as a maelstrom of cars collapsed onto each other.
@LuimmR15 it isn't shaking, its just that it isn't always hung at the same horizontal point. It's not always at a straight line, it's more like in zig-zag, and at that speed it is evident. but actually the longitudinal shaking is what stops these trains from going even faster, the train catches up with the oscilation tha pantograph creates on the catenary. besides just tunning the whole train up, whats most complicated is to make a pantograph that can keep up with the oscilations of the catenary
No Fatalities Have Been Recorded Since 26 years. A New Speed Record. TGV = Incredible. Maglev slightly faster but have at least one accident in Shanghai, Berlin & Tokyo.
Amtrak's Acela Express currently operates at 150MPH on the Eastern Corridor. Right now, the average TGV service travels at about 168-170 MPH...Not much faster. The TGV that broke the world record had two engines pulling on three cars. Acela's usually have about 12 cars, still at 150MPH.
you conveniently forgot to mention that on TGV has actual operational AVERAGE SPEED of 170mph(TGV-Est) and OPERATIONAL TOP SPEED of acela is a mere 150MPH...
You're fighting a loosing battle here. Everyone knows the Acela is not a HST by international standards. There was an oppotunity to build a real HST, but no appetite for the investment. Great shame. As a result, the Acela trundles along form Washington to NY at a faster rate on on improved old line. The max speed of 150mph, as you should know, is only maintained for a few kms (15?) on the whole line. The rest is much slow. The TGV operates largely on dedicated track at HST speed (200mph).

(reply to mjkft22)
Actually, the average TGV trains' top speed is 186 MPH (or average; correct me if i'm wrong), and sometimes carry up to 20 cars.
And Acela carries 8 cars, with one rare 9-car set, and just its top speed is 150 MPH.
That makes a difference.

You're fighting a loosing battle here. Everyone knows the Acela is not a HST by international standards. There was an oppotunity to build a real HST, but no appetite for the investment. Great shame.
