@yotax YouTube (as it currently is in 2012), really sucks on anything less than a 1.25GHz G4 (on Linux or even OS X). Even if you were to pop the video into a scalable, separate window and shrink it to 1/6th the size of the screen and stream the video at 240p, the frame rate is still quite choppy and is badly out of sync with the audio.
I have a maxed-out iMac G3/600 Snow with the full 1GB of ram, and on a wired ethernet connection... and still, YouTube stinks on this machine.
@TranzPink007 startx starts the X Server, and depending on how much RAM you have, you might get a setup screen when you first boot after the install - The iMac G3 I have only has 192 MB, so it didn't run it. If the setup runs it will have you set you up with a username and password so you don't have to login as root.
I am certainly considering this upgrade for my fathers old computer. Right now as I type I am installing the 6 ISO CD SET of Yellow Dog Linux 5.x on an old iMac PowerPC 750 600mhz... Can you get a flash player type to play youtube videos?

Hey, I have a N00B question. Can an iMac G3 boot form a regular Linux boot disc? Do you need to make a different boot disc than you would use on a windows PC or netbook? I'm considering trying out Ubuntu, but an iMac G3 is the only computer I'm not afraid to screw around with.
@natlinxz No, PowerPC Macs require a special version of Linux designed for the processor. Ubuntu, Debian, Yellow Dog and Slackintosh are the ones that work best.
how do you actually install a linux distro onto the imac its-self, i have 1 issue i load the disk into the drive and then reboot, then it just loads Mac OS 9.2 and skips the boot selector (btw i have a mac keyboard but it is faulty and wont type).
@dvdragond2 You need to have a special version of Linux that works on PowerPC processors, the ones I know of are Ubuntu, Yellow Dog, Debian, and Slackintosh. Make sure you have enough RAM in the machine, 192 MB was pushing it in that iMac. Sorry it took me so long to respond! Hope this helps!
I have an old iMac, but it's a tray loader. Would Yellow Dog work on it too? (I was told that xubuntu might be too advanced for the old machine.) I'm looking for something faster than the Mac OS 9.2 that's it's currently running.
This video isn't what the computer has to go through every time you turn it on, right?
@Cricket24 Xubuntu should work fine, but anything over 6.06 (Dapper Drake) will have problems with the video (You'll have to run the xorgwizard to configure the X server.)

You need to get a quieter hard drive for that mac rofl... I resurrected a dead G3 myself with a 200GB IDE drive I found, and it was almost silent

What is the local host login: root ?????
Then after you type your password... I noticed you typed something else in? What will get this OS moving?

BTW: I can't believe that you got past OS 5.x how did you get 6.1 on this system? I thought I read somewhere that only up to 5 was the G3 supported?
