Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey were two of the best, most inspiring actors I have ever seen. This version was and never will be topped by anyone, at anytime. It was miraculous and beautiful, these two were made for one another and this movie.

For me very personally this was an icon of the best decade - the sixties. But where would the film have been without the hypnotic score by Nino Rota ( should have won an Oscar) ? just shows what poor judgement the Academy has.

Will never be bettered this version but Leonard Whiting never fulfilled his early promise. Great shame because he had the charm and the looks but perhaps not quite the acting gravitas needed to take on more mature roles. Still he was my favourite Romeo. Di Caprio was not even in the same league but now is a great actor.,

@rohansrider Leonard and Olivia were fantastic as Romeo & Juliet There is no one now who could possibly compare to him back in the day. Nobody! All of today's pretty boys pale in comparison to Len Whiting and Oliiva.

Whiting is still a very good looking man at 58 years old.  I know less about Olivia. Whiting is a Shakesperean professor. it was this amazing production in 1968 that has inspired my love of Shakespear ever since.
