Look at it this way; unless you commit an indictable offence, there are no consequences for what you do in high school (in Canada at least, students NEVER get expelled or suspended. I'm also assuming you plan your actions out beforehand). So if anyone gives you a hard time, you can probably strike back and get away with it.

Carl is so right! I finished high school 31 years ago, and only keep in touch (rarely at that) only one guy I knew from high school and earlier years. That's partly because I've moved around a lot, but mainly because after high school I was preoccupied with other pursuits like college, working, and pursuing hobbies and interests with others who are like minded. In summary, during those years in high school concentrate on what's inportant, and that excludes popularity contests.

I've always been a bit of a loner in high school. (I'm still there now.) There's quite a notorious "popular" crowd at my school. Sometimes, I think to myself, "Shouldn't I be out partying now?" Or, "Geez, I have no life." But the thing is, those sorts of gatherings aren't my thing. And I don't want to change myself just so everyone would "love" me. I guess I should feel better with the fact that I can start over once I get into post-secondary. Thanks for the video.

There's merit in not being overly concerned with social tiers, but this advice shouldn't be taken too much to heart. I never socialised in high school, and you know what happened? I was completely screwed over, lacked the groundwork to develop necessary skills for engaging with the real world, and after three years of university was relegated to a pissy little dead end job that I'll probably never escape without having to live on the street.
It's true. Practically no one keeps in touch from high school. In fact, most people move away for college and start entirely new lives. Teens worry way too much about social acceptance and don't realize what a big life change is coming at 18 usually for the better. It's really great that you and your sister are talking about these issues.
Facebook, and myspace before that, put me back in contact with high school friends. Some of them I've re-developed a "real" relationship with, outside of social media, but in general, what you're saying, is absolutely true.
Don't worry about being cool and popular, but care about your social life in high school, be on good terms with everyone. The only reason why this person probably doesn't care was because he was called names all the time.And it does matter if you had a good social life in HS if you decide to have a Facebook. Socially, High School is highly recommended. Not required...but then again if you don't have that social benefit, you won't be prepared for higher learning. If you're just one of those anti-social people who prefers to sit in a corner or the back of the class, then you're an outcast. I was never a popular kid in my school, but I fit in so well with everyone I became friends with all sorts of people.

Concentrating on your studies in school is great advice, but the relationships and the shared activities outside of school with your friends and neighbors are what you are going to talk about and remember for the rest of your adult life. Maybe if you can find a healthy balance of the two somehow.

Even if you don't take the same way for all your life - you can still share a part of it. Because that's what happens if you refuse to care about anybody who won't stay for the rest of your life.

I'm not in touch with most of my former friends from university either - a few years after graduating. And this won't be the last time in my life when certain friendships fade away. Life changes very often, and so do friendships, and people you spend time with and you feel close to change.

Even what i considered my "good" friends, i don't talk to that much.
I was a quick kid, so i never fell for the popularity bull in HS, but i saw so many kids just have no respect for themselves and pander to what everyone thought was "cool" just to get in the "cool" group.
Not worth it.
Study, get good grades, be friends with a small group of kids, don't change yourself. Be you.

Facebook, and myspace before that, put me back in contact with high school friends. Some of them I've re-developed a "real" relationship with, outside of social media, but in general, what you're saying, is absolutely true.

Don't worry about being cool and popular, but care about your social life in high school, be on good terms with everyone. The only reason why this person probably doesn't care was because he was called names all the time.And it does matter if you had a good social life in HS if you decide to have a Facebook. Especially when you go out of your way to Post videos 50 yourself on youtube. These type of people are just hungry for attention. They want to be on TV so badly and have people admire them.

High school is a bubble, its own little world. You become someone else simply to survive the process. I know I did, and I could see other people changing how they acted.

@OhMarGerine Yeah, you're absolutely right. For some reason I'm building fences and street roads and making 50k a year, but you're right I'll be stuck at Burger King, obviously! My life is so pathetic, you opened my eyes...So when will this all begin? Are you saying this cause your life is pathetic and meaningless? I should have expected such talk from some fresh-out-of-school loner. It's alright, you can get out of Burger King, or move up to management. You're going places I promise. ;)

Socially, High School is highly recommended. Not required...but then again if you don't have that social benefit, you won't be prepared for higher learning. If you're just one of those anti-social people who prefers to sit in a corner or the back of the class, then you're an outcast. I was never a popular kid in my school, but I fit in so well with everyone I became friends with all sorts of people.
You remind me of a sad emo kid who got picked on in my High School. <.<

Concentrating on your studies in school is great advice, but the relationships and the shared activities outside of school with your friends and neighbors are what you are going to talk about and remember for the rest of your adult life. Maybe if you can find a healthy balance of the two somehow.

Very, very few people have very, very few friendships that indeed last forever. All that doesn't mean you don't value them now, or they can't rely on you or you on them. Even if you don't take the same way for all your life - you can still share a part of it. Will you spend your entire life without friends, being lonely all your life, never supporting anybody, or geting support by anyone? Because that's what happens if you refuse to care about anybody who won't stay for the rest of your life.

I like that you say it doesn't matter to be cool. I don't agree on your reason: because you don't see the people anymore after a few years. I'm not in touch with most of my former friends from university either - a few years after graduating. And this won't be the last time in my life when certain friendships fade away. Life changes very often, and so do friendships, and people you spend time with and you feel close to change.

i;m a junior, in my first year of legit ib at my school. grades 9 and 10 are pre-ib and 11 and 12 is IB. and it's really stressful, but its only a few years, then we have the rest of our lives to live/do well with the amazing education. :) sooo worth it. :)

i'm friends with the majority of the people in my grade. and i don't drink and smoke and sleep around, people just like me cause i'm aproachable and friendly. i'm not one of those people that hate staying at home and goes partying every weekend with randoms though. i enjoy time alone at home...wait that rhymes. lol
but i spend more time with my closest friends.

high school isnt that important for people, cuz sometimes people are just saying "to be cool and hanging out with us you have to do that and that and that etc..." but im glad its not like that at the high school im at right now...everyone have friends there, cool or not it just dosent matter

Freshmen year at FSU and I rarely talk to ANY of my old friends.
Even what i considered my "good" friends, i don't talk to that much.
I was a quick kid, so i never fell for the popularity bull in HS, but i saw so many kids just have no respect for themselves and pander to what everyone thought was "cool" just to get in the "cool" group.
Not worth it.
Study, get good grades, be friends with a small group of kids, don't change yourself. Be you.

Whoo I SO agree!! I've had a very strange education (won't go into the details) but it's resulted in me being very satisfied with who I am and not who 'they' want me to be. Anyway, I see all the time the social/peer pressure people put themselves under and I think it's pretty stupid - I mean your life hasn't properly even started at 15/16/17 so whats the big deal in the long-term?

I know EXACTLY what you mean, if only I knew it earlier, because I've finished high school this year. I just can't wait for college to begin and make new friends. I see my old classmates on Facebook, but nobody of them respond to my status updates. It's like I'm talking to no-one.
