  • Fabulous. Never was a big fan of electro-pop, but this transcends the genre; Takes me back 30 years to being 16, listening to this in the back room of Michelle D's house and wanting her sooo much.

  • clarinet is real beauty

  • simply spectacular

  • whooo I need one of those every now and again..

  • The extended versions of all these 80’s classics are always better; why? Because they last longer! You can softly get into this deep, elegant and paranoid tune; a delight for all senses; only for sensitive souls who can appreciate of art of this music; it gets better with ages

  • love the keyboard to! great song

  • love the sax

  • There's always 1 dick to every masterpiece here in youtube... there's always this one fucking dick!!!!

  • Gorgeous clarinet

  • I learnt how to play clarinet with my dad to this song. In fact this song was my show off song in 6th grade band. And next weekend, I'm having the first two musical phrases from the clarinet part tattooed on my back. Thank you to Soft Cell for this amazing piece of art that has brought much joy to my dad and I.

  • 1.24 when the keyboards come in, I start to fill with tears-truly beautifiul

  • @RHINOWINOLUNATIC Yeah, i think that is probably my favourite part, i was always partial to songs/bands that used synths in that particular way

  • @RHINOWINOLUNATIC çà me fait la même chose (i have the same thing)

  • First time i,ve heard this version. Brings a lump to my throat. Classis clarinet playing .

  • Cool song, brings back lots of memories :) Dave Tofani was awesome playing clarinet on this track.

  • Iam not a cock sucker but i do like this song

  • life alive again after 25 years it feels like x x x x x x x x x x xx x

  • I have never heard this version before - completely, utterly spellbinding!

  • Happy memories. Sheer class.

  • As good as it gets and then some !!!

  • has to be the best clarinet ive ever heard its fkn awsome when it goes into the first chorus fck its beautiful makes me cry fk im 47

loved it when i was a teenager and still brings me to tears the power of music fuck yeah.

  • oh wow my fourth boyfriend introduced me to this song in 1982. at least i think he was my boyfriend. does one week count? :)

  • Clarinet solos are quite a major finger up in my opinion. Matt Johnson had clarinet on the first version of uncertain smile , probably a connection.

Anyway, brings back a lot of good memories. Thanks.

  • Wow! I haven't heard this one for a long time. A beautiful song. When the clarinet goes into the first chorus, a wonderful shudder goes through me with that gorgeous chord change! Marc's vocals are just right too. Thank you for finding this fabulous version - superb!

  • So achingly beautiful it makes me want to weep.

  • What a terrific song, its so powerful. Thank you so much for posting!

  • One of the best songs of the 80's

  • Takes me back to '82. great memories and this is some tune!!!!!!

  • Damn how lonely & sad I was when first girl friend broke up the relation, back in '82. Brings back the original feelings of true love.

  • was 22 when this came out im now 50 and its STILL bloody brilliant.

  • Beautiful, so beautiful - takes me back to my youth, and brings more than a tear to my eyes - thanks for the upload.

  • I have posted the vinyl version

    check my username

  • The original vinyl runs for 9"14' and has 20 seconds more music after the vocal ends. I tried to upload it but got bumped for copyright bullshit. If anyone has the vinyl and can put it on would be grateful. Those last few seconds round off the song nicely! never thought I would ever say that.

  • absolute beauty and complete heartbreak in less than 9 minutes

  • I just wanna listen to that clarinet all day.. I love this version and I think I have all of them now.

This is my ultimate favourite of the duo, but reliving the 80s is always feel good even tho this is sposed to be sad, its very passion makes it uplifting

  • Didnt like them much at the time, I was more into Depeche and Yazoo but hey as you get older you appreciate classics like this. Absolutely brilliant

  • Thanks so much for this.

I had the original vynyl, now long gone, and had looked for this a few times.

    Simply exquisite intro

    a great song

holds some very special memories for me

    Thanks again

  • Really can't feel the vibe, this is shit

Danny, Mike & Craig (not Jony)

  • 5*****.......Epic

  • Soul music, folk music, spiritual, lullaby, each song is a kiss from heaven.

  • the coolist start to ever any track

  • so cool this song will be cool 4 ever 45 x rocker but still it 80,s will live 4 ever

  • The chorus, with that chord progression and the thick lush synth strings or mellotron and "Take your hands off me....", fucking beautiful! A superb moment in the history of music!

  • At 1:24 it starts to pull at your heartstrings....

  • @JoeSzilagy and again at 2.50.....haha

  • fantastic, i can't tolerate anything else by them but this is a masterpiece. reminds me of my childhood, my mum loves this tune. i don't think anyone could not.

  • Fucking brilliant tune!

  • what a tune...fuck x factor

  • what an era for quality music the 80`s was. not like all that shit they bang out now xxx

  • Two words 'fucking awesome'

  • fantastic song, that clarinet, dave ball a true genius, love this song so much

  • love it, that sax....OMG....the best ever

  • I spent Years searching for this version on vinyl! I was so happy when I found it - Long time deleted now!

I would like this track played at my funeral!

    An Absolute Masterpiece!!!

  • @bignickb so agree this version means so much 2 me, i met a couple that started 2 go down my local working mens club and they were wonderful so 80s , and we started talking music , and soft cell came into it, and he said bet you ent heard this version, blew me away when i heard it, sadly his wife passed away at 39, so this song always reminds me of my pal Shazza.

  • fantastic, you made me happy !! great version thanks!

  • OMG,, i must have played this song 100s if not 1000s of times when i was 16years old,,,, it was, and still is a wonderful piece of music,, it sounds silly, but i used to be a bit dissapionted when the words started,,

    28years have flown by,,,,,,

  • A track of pure artisic alternative creation, minus the vocals. I appreciate the very apt & precise comments from FoolOf Gods, if only we could see more of this kind of content. I believe it is such an infitting statement concluding how some people interpret this track in their own minds with poignant feelings from past or present. It either fortify's or enervates emotions, never failing to target what the individual perceives of it. An insanely beautiful compilation!.

  • This is my new favorite song in the history of the world.

  • Thankyou for posting this...........

  • years since I heard the full version, great song

  • First time I've heard this.

  • played this at my dad funneal xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • I've always only heard the David Gray version. I love that version so much, but I always got so lost in his voice over that guitar that I never even knew what the song was about. Hearing this version and actually paying attention to the lyrics, felt like getting punched in the gut. Definitely some of the best song lyrics ever written.

  • what a blend of instruments and synth..............and it worx too!!

  • love it!!

  • Don't know why, but the brilliant and haunting clarinet makes me quite mournful for those days in 82 when I was 17 and loving life. It brings back the great memories, while at the same time it somehow subtley reminds me that they're permanently in the past. No other tune does this. Complete emotion stirrer, Absolutely Unique!

  • @steelbanktrucker Couldnt have put it better myself, i was about 14 when this came out..

we tend to see the past through rose tinted glasses and perhaps its better that way.

I brought most of soft cells singles when they came out.

This was just the bside and the aside put together on one side, to be honest i felt cheated when i bought the 12inch version many years later

  • this was played at my dad funneal i miss him loads xxxxx

  • Thanks for this! Top, top tune. :)

  • Haunting as well as emotional...

  • This is awesome. Had the 12" single, played it to death. The clarinet solo is superb. Love it.

  • Thanks.

    Greatest thing they ever did.

  • Outstanding - this version is the best thing they ever did

    Thank you!

  • the clarinet is so hauntinly beautiful,i played it over and over when i had the 12 inch vinyl

  • @lisalovesmusic1000 the clarinet makes it for me and the wife , just lay on the bed together and chill ,, the best 12 inch remix ever . soft cell werent my cup of tea when young eighties skinhead but now you realise good music as a 40 year old

  • Soft Cell always ahead ov their time, reintroduced torch songs in an electro mode (though B.E.F. dabbled with that as well) and just like the Beatles with Lucy (when returning from the US) just ask Cindy … This take is topnotch but on vinyl it just sound like it should: magick!

  • @bissia Bang on there, the bass line on vinly, made my skin jump, with the clarinet raising the hairs on my arms, and when marc breaks in,my eyes closed and i sung deep inside,,,this was a song, that woke me up,,,.from being a arrogant skinhead,in the early 80s.trust me on that,,,

  • I had not heard this song for nearly 28 years and the emotional response was overwhelming. It brought back memories of a time when individualism was rife and we were going to change the world. Thank you to all those people at 2 Field Hospital 1981 -1983. We did rule the world. For all those with broken hearts, I hope you found happiness

  • everything in the 80`s was remixed or extended but this really does stand head and shoulders above everything from that era........quite simply a 12 " of absolute genius

  • @jamesjnr67 yes mate agree

  • I left school when this was in the charts. Makes me cry ^^^^

  • thanks for this

  • ....the clarinet sounds as flat as a f--- ! original is always best !

  • My fav Soft Cell song, so intense and sad.

  • never heard this mix be4 brill thanx 4 posting thanx goodness 4 utube so we dont forget these class songs

  • nice, thanks. excellent track

  • just listened to five versions of this song, each one can make me cry if I let it...

  • I bought this extended version in a record store in Calgary, Alberta a long time ago on vinyl. Is it available on any of their CDs without any disco mixes, etc., just like it is here? Man, when the chorus comes in with the synth or mellotron strings- wow! Beautiful! I'm amazed no one else has tried to cover it- maybe the emotion can't be captured.

  • @JoeSzilagy David Gray has done a very beautiful cover of this extended version.

Can't compare the two though. They're both lovely.

  • I haven't heard this version since I was a kid! This is amazing!

  • IMHO This will always be thee best extended version of 'SHWG' there was a remixed version released during the early 90's, but it lacked the ambiguous mixture of utterly heartbreaking pathos and rueful introspectiveness of the original ... Dave Ball, unrecognised 'Synth-Meister'. A beautiful song from a fab duo

  • @FoolOfGods Yeah, i uploaded the 12" mix of the 1990's version as well to YT. I think its a half decent version actually, musically at least, but Marc's vocals, what with him being older I guess, seem more controlled, but as a result less passionate. Regardless, it will never be as good as this original.

  • @FoolOfGods absolutely fantastic! the clarinet is beautiful!.. many years since i heard it....did have the 12 inch record but it got lost over the years..brought back many memories!

  • Agree this is a sublime version....I remember afternoons with mates listening to the 12 inch..now can anyone help? I'm sure the 12 inch B side was pure clarinet instrumental...anyone remember please? Thanks

  • Nice to hear it from vinyl again. Thanks for putting it on utube, enjoyed listening.

  • Excellent, i never listen this Version before.

But i have all the Lp´s at Vynil.

    Thanks for Uploading.

  • Super kawałek , przypomina lata mojej młodości i bardzo miłe wspomnienia

  • my youth 5 star

  • I am Number1

  • This is......BANG YOUR F***IN BRAINS OUT!!!

  • I hear this version for the first time again in 28 years!!! Loved it so much back than - could never find it anywhere (or wasn't looking hard enough?!) Thank you SOOOOOO much for posting!

  • This song is so so good. I heard it for the first time the day it was released, it was a very limitted edition and our record shop(goodness records of caterham surrey)only had two copies, my friend john got one. It was amazing to hear the clarinet then and it still is now. Long live the memories

  • thank god for this song. am going through a terrible break up, and this thing nails the sucker right on the head.

  • Remember the line

"take your hands off me I m much too good for you; you see"

enjoy the rest of your life !:) & be happy

  • almost right but that is the line I used to sing to myself also remember "you' re used to wearing less & now your life's a mess" (your ex)

  • I love this song, it's so full of emotion and heart ache. Marc Almond id practically living this song as he sings it. The lyrics remind me of a relationship I once had and as in the lyrics it never lasted.

  • @clooneyclub The video is great too. :)

  • brings back so many memories, still a great song

  • love 2 know who played the clarinet to this . it really made the 12inch version

  • * Marc Almond: Vocals * Dave Ball: Backing Vocals, Synthesizers, Multi-Instruments, Electronic Sounds * Cindy Ecstasy: Backing Vocals * John Gatchell: Horns * David Tofani: Clarinet, Saxophone * Vicious Pink Phenomena: Backing Vocals

  • Dave Tofani, was on live in Central Park (Simon & Garfunkel) as well.

  • hi, i love simon and garfunkel, how i would have loved 2 hear that, what did Dave Tofani play? and Simon and Garfunkel, thanx 4 that mate Bex

  • @bex01536

    It was Dave Tofani

  • R.IP my pal shazza

  • this is the best Soft Cell EVER

it is one of only a few soings that used a clarinet instead of the normal saxophone and because all the other bands at the time (esp duran duran) were using sax's the clarinet was so specail in the 12inch song

it should also have been used in the single but it wasnt that much

i still have the 12" vynyl and the 7" so i know the difference between the 2 songs

VIVA LA 80'S dont it seriously make you want a time machine to go back and relive the age

  • @MrBaggy69 You are so fucking right. The 80's was something superior. It was the time of art through lyrics, melancholy, feelings and paranoia. A heartrending chant to

    any matter they could suggest!

  • @BlackSkyThunder dont forget that everyone and i do mean every one from duran duran, spandau ballet to ABC were using saxophones and to use a clarinet for me makes this the best love song/ballard of the 80's

  • Surely one of the greatest choruses!!!

  • Marc Almond, WHAT A LEGEND.

  • This version is brilliant!!

Spent hours driving around in the car with this blaring out of the speakers....

    Thanks for the memories

  • Ihr seid einfach sehr gut drauf, dass Ihr diesen Song, nach dem ich schon so lange gesucht habe, für uns alle zur Verfügung stellt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ahcr2ds

  • Fantastic..love it, love it..one of the best songs ever!!

  • lovely song

  • The 80's is the best era of all time so good that most fashion and music is based on it today Marc almonds music is outstanding.

  • Das war echt das ultimative Gefühl nach unerfüllter Liebe, Sehnsucht und das Wissen, daß da mehr ist als man sich vorstellen kann und das alles einmal gut wird. Das waren meine 80er!

  • try bear share limewire has it but wont download

  • hach wie schön!

  • this version was superb. First heard it after going through someones record collection I was babysitting for and then spent 20 years looking for it on vinyl. Thank god for itunes and the like. The clarinet still sends shivers down my spine.

  • Oh. My. Fucking. GOD. I was convinced that the clarinet version was only on the B side of the 7" vinyl single, which I taped once, and couldn't find anywhere. Thanks so much for posting. This is SC's masterpiece.

  • I have also uploaded the B side to the 7" single :-)

  • @Sledge101 Pretty sure that is an oboe...more melancholy and 'nasal'....oftern used by symphony orchestras to impart that gloomy feeling, when a clarinet is too bright.

  • total f *&in bliss.....tuuuune!!!!

  • taaaakeeeeeee yoooouuuurrrrrr haaaannnnndddddssssss offffffff meeeeeeeeeeee, so dramatic lol.....i dooooonnntttt beeeelllooonnnnggggg

  • Superb! Reminds me when I left school.

  • i had this on the original single 7"....b-side of the a-side...funnily enough....always liked this better.....

  • The version to end all........classic

  • thanks for postin this you're a gem!

  • They played a bit of the solo on Football Focus today linked to Harry Rednap going to Spurs, which I thought was a bit odd because how many people would know the title of the song from just the beginning of the clarinet solo? Anyway brilliant version - took me years to track it down because some numbnuts told me the version on the 'Twelve Inch Singles' didn't have the clarinet solo.

  • Fucking love this i do,and i,m a hardened skinhead who likes ska/two tone and all that fucking hard stuff, know wot i mean? I,ve always liked marc almond, and i,m a fucking hard nut as well mind, i,ve liked him ever since i met him in 1979 at a fucking hard skinhead bash in notting hill when i was a fucking rock solid fucking hard as dave courtney fucking hard nut, And our eyes met across a crowded fucking hard glue sniffing do and we kissed and put each others penis,s up each others bottoms. xx
