Hard to believe that, what, about 40% of all flying done in the United States is done by third-party regional airlines that aren't even affiliated with the majors.
I'm actually kind of relieved that my eyesight is just under TC regulations for the CPL/ATR licensing requirements. I'd hate to be stuck flying a CRJ or Dash for 10-12 years. I'll stick to my King Air.
Ah man, watching this video makes me thank my lucky stars for not going into this job. I even briefly attended flight school and left before I spent too much money. All I can say is thank god I quit..... phew
One way to kinda avoid this (at least the "underpaid" part) is to do a boots-on-the-ground hunting for a Lear 35 job somewhere close to home. Air-ambulance etc. They might fly you a lot during one day, but at least, if they're a good company, they'll pay you decent money your first year and give you a fair amount of time off.
@aobt1407 I'm not going to say which one I work for, but most pay close to that. Eagle Med starts at 70k on the King Air, Omniflight close to 60 for the pilatus, captains on the hawker at AirMed make more than 100k. Even the mom and pop places flying piston equipment like 421/402s make close to 50.
Working as a regional airline pilot was the worse days of my life. The time away from my family I will never get back....Oh yeah I made less than $20,000/year and had to rent a 2 bedroom apartment in California with 8 other guys just to have a place to sleep. I was so broke and stressed out about how to pay for my phone bill and kids lunch that I had to quit! Quitting was the best thing I ever did. I am so much happier now and I have a great quality of life since leaving that profession.
Yep, I know how you feel my friend. Guess the FAA and the D.O.T. are best buddies it's no different for us truck drivers. I guess you'd have to call me crazy or in love with flying for coming off the road and trading one for the other long hours, low pay and getting treated like crap. However flying is something i love and will always love. Gonna be Starting Spartan College next year. wheels up....
Great video, I'm flight instructing right now, and was happy to find this video. Showed me some of the "in the life of...." what I might have in a few months. I'm excited but also a bit worried about this next step in my career.
dude, awesome video! well done. hopefully i'll be flying RJ's or corporate in a few years. in the process of my PPL then on to finish with my commercial instrument
@airlinephl2 if you want a good regional airline you have to leave the states they fuck their pilots over, i worked for air georgian in canada and made almost 40G a year
There was a really cool Regional Airline Pilot video, he recorded himself from home to airport and going there with his BMW car I think with a nice music. Don't know where it went. ;(
