Karen still has the most striking voice I've ever heard (closely followed by Judith Durham of The Seekers, sorry Judith!) and this is one of her most iconic songs, beautiful.
A "heavenly choir" with a fuzz guitar-- it SHOULDN'T have worked, but by God it did! Whatever else you might think of Richard Carpenter, with this record if not any others he entered the ranks of classic record producer. Of course, having Karen do the song couldn't hurt!
As one who sings and who loves music of various kinds, I recognize Karen's voice as very good and emotionally nuanced. I sort of couldn't see the "voice for the shmaltz" at the time, growing up in the '70s. Now, I truly appreciate her voice, and the music has the sheen of nostalgia.
Btw, I remember an excellent history of the Carpenters which came out in the later 1990's... Very well done, with various interviews, and in it Richard speaks of how this song came into existence.
This was the ironic 'conclusion' to the the Carpenters long series of hits...Some came after, but this was a nice representative to stand for the rest. A synecdoche, iyw.
I agree with from73 who wrote: "Songwriting at it's best! As a guitarist this is my all time favorite guitar solo!"
It was an epiphany that my ex-bf said "Did you listen to the words of that song?!" and I realized that it was accurate for me: hopeful, longing, sad, realistic, striving. And some 30 years later, it's still true and accurate. And what an incredible fuzz guitar, which I wish could go on longer. Sad and beautiful and empathetic. A rare emotional high with an emotional low.
It amazes me how Karen hid such unhappiness and loneliness behind such a beautiful voice, and only when we lost her, we all really start to "listen" xxx God Bless Karen :)
Karen your song speaks to my lonely heart. I hope someday I finally find someone. I'm so lonely. I hurting inside. I hope I'm not saying good bye to love. bless your sweet soul.
@rekoonsghjkl Maybe this new year will bring someone very special into your life! You just can never know what will happen from one day to the next! Greg
I was six years old when I first heard the Carpenters on the radio, in 1970. I've always liked them, but wouldn't admit it, for fear of being made fun of by the other boys. I'm grown up....now I can admit it. Now I don't care what anyone thinks. They're collaboration had great melody, harmony, and emotion, packed into many songs. I didn't care for that "alien" song, but it was great arrangements and a distinctive voice by Karen that made it memorable and listenable. It's yesterday, once more....
@MrChrispy777 I am French.....in 70 i have 14 years.....and first time it's one great émotion....also radio .....it's ok with you.....Carpentres it's SUPER ....bye...
@MrLinoventura Bonjour. In 1970 I was 7 years old. I was very emotional when I listened. My friend and I would sing it and cry. Do you like Emerson Lake and Palmer - "C'est La Vie" ? Beautiful. Listen
Her true life story movie The Karen Carpenter Story (1989) (TV) shown on television a long time ago, I can still remember it. Karen was played by Cynthia Gib, it was very good.
@Lynnianaa Yeah! I am in that club too. Though I live with someone, it's like living alone or worse. So I have made my loneliness my best friend. Like we say in Spain: better alone that in bad company. Cheers to you also, my friend!
@rrdab1 hey!!!!! think about the other side of the coin when karen became sick thru anorexria peter woz always there for his lil sister peter only carried on coz karen would want him to
@eeeeeeclapclap Same here. I'm in my 40s, and women have never wanted to even touch me, so I expect to grow old and die alone. To me, "love", "romance" & such are just B.S....lies. This song sums it up.
@lenf67 Love is very real but some of never find it. Or worse- we find it and screw it up, then live the rest of our lives in grief and regret. I dont know which is worse. There is a lot of pain for us all, whether we are physically attractive or not. Thank god for friends and pets.
@lenf67 I'm a member of the club. In my 40s too and have never been in a relationship. Sucks but I'm almost to the point where I don't pine for it anymore. I've accepted that there's no love me for and I just live the best I can. I do ok in other areas of my life but just can't find anyone to share love with.
@magovenor Mighty big presumption you're making there magovenor. When did I ever mention that I was wrapped up in lust prior to now? Not only is it a mistaken assumption, it's also insulting.
@a32tl tl Keep giving it your all. Don't give up, but focus on what you want, not on your negative feelings. Just a self improvement that can help you, this is not an advertisement, but the Hypnonosis Motivation Institute has a tool called the Mental Bank which possibly could help you. HOLY SHIT, I was playing air guitar to this at 15 and still doing it at 54, just cannot help myself, awesome sound. And of course what a gorgeous voice she had and harmony with her brother, bless her.
To quote Tony Peluso about this recording. When he got the call to play on this song he was floored, as it was Karen herself that called him. Once he got to the studio he didn't have a clue how to play it so he did something "soft" and "easy" and kept in the background. It was Richard that told him. "Follow the melody of the song for 8 bars and then just let it rip... Burn..." and this was the result... One of the best guitar solo's ever recorded..
@boc234 Tony Peluso played the guitar solo, which was known as the fuzz gutiar, but it is such an amazing solo and as you say sends chills down you. RIP Karen
favorite groups in the 1970's were electric light orchestra, queen, elton john band, but for ballads have to include karen carpenter her ballads are outstanding..just a new fan here 40 years too late.
@bungle56 Tony Peluso. This was the first thing he ever did with them, and (as you can imagine) they hired him on permanently after that. He was a record producer after Karen died.
This music was blasted in chicago housing years ago. Those voices were great. We couldn't believe it when Karen died. It's hard to compare the perfect voices of Karen and Ella. Both were so, so good. But i still want to sing with both of them if it were possible, but... Introducing this music to my family and friends wasn't hard, they couldn't help but to love the sound.
KAREN CARPENTER! Like millions of others worldwide, I simply love Karen Carpenter's voice. It is pure, lovely, and natural and truly unique. Karen was a singer who if she had lived a deservedly longer life might have become "The First Lady of American Song," a title that Ella Fitzgerald was given. In my heart, I think of her as being exactly that despite her shortened life. God Bless You Karen!
The fuzzed out guitar solo is the dirtiest rockinest thing since helter skelter. This is rock and roll. Anyone who thinks The Carpenters were not heavy is crazy.
karen carpenter - one of the best females singers ever to grace my generation. i hope everyone can remember where you were when you first heard this song.
The dominating guitar solo makes this song work for me. Beautiful arrangement, but Richard is a genius for taking the risk of allowing a guitar genius to do his thing. This is one of my favorite pop songs.
Boutdonow14 Me too. It's funny because she is either there with her head down or walked off or playing the air guitar during that solo! It is so out of place for the song! Still, I have to listen.
I would like to put this one out there & roll the Dice for the world to read & see what they think of this idea. I would Love more than anything in the world for Richard Carpenter to get the Carpenter band together (including Herb, & Burt who were a Big part) & do a tribute show for Karen &Tony. Why not one more time, for the good old times. Everyones getting older each & every year, I really believe in my heart that this would be special & Karen could be included on a Big Screen with Pictures
that's an interesting tidbit you gave there in the description section about the background of this song. I love the carpenters....I may not have been around yet during their time but I still love them.
Tony Paluso's solo put the 'Power Ballad' on the map. What a great guitarist. He took the pain in those lyrics and tore your heart out with that guitar lead. Tony Paluso is gone now,he passed away June 5, 2010, but he will live forever in this song. And I think that this may have been the greatest guitar solo of all time...because from the time I first heard it in 1972 to the present, I can't listen to it without feeling a lump in my throat. Good job Tony.
This is a haunting song. The emotion could not be captured by any other soul that ever lived other than Karen. Still one of the greatest voices of all time.
Beautiful song and a beautiful voice sung by a beautiful person with a sadly tourturned soul. Would be my favorite song of all time if it weren't for the teeth-chattering, unecessary (for a ballad) screeching guitar interludes.
@HuntingForHumans No , maybe not the greatest solo ever , but you had to be there , This was the beginning of the melodic
heavy guitar solo , to do this in a soft rock Carpenters song was Epic, unheard of at the time , they took a slagging on radio for this solo, yet it is one of the tastiest, most melodic solos of all time , it rates , believe me , it rates
Before I could choose and buy my music, my folks supplied the tunes, and they had this one cassette, I have to say, my earliest music appreciation, it stands the REAL test of time, and testament about how music can cross over and persevere over time, however, it's volume is a bit overmodulating
Interesting anecdote which I heard Karen herself convey; she was in New York City, sitting on a park bench, when someone approached her and only said this before they walked away: "Great voice, love." That someone was John Lennon.
@cosg9531 how do we know that to be true? Was Karen being video taped when she said that? Just wondering. She is my all time favorite singer and she meant so much to me and that is an understatement! Her songs represented my life in words. She meant so much to me!
Don't mean to bum anyone out, but when I listened to this when I was 17 or 18 and realistically knew what my chances for a love life were with double scoliosis and untreated low-active thyroid disease, a dignified life would be the best I could pull off. I'm 57 now, and it's played that way. A dignified life lived without being loved. Well, there was my cat. haha
Lol, I used to have (I think it was two) of those Fuzztones. Everybody did back then. I had a friend (now deceased) who had one of those (I think it is) Gibson 330s. Later he had a 335 just like BB King's, except it wasn't named Lucille.
I don't know why Karen C. quit eating. She really did need to know more about life and just a little less about show business. But of course Burt Bacharach was a backer, and so was a brother. Be careful children. 100 yrs is the appropriate goal. Keep playing!
She would only be 61 now. Even if she retired this year, what amount of work would nearly another 30 years have given to us? The mind can't even imagine.
@cosg9531 With Richard as the driving force of the Carpenters, I'm sure they would have created a lot more music together. If Karen had survived that fatal incident, she would have seen the light and taken better care of herself, mentally and physically. But in the end that is just an "if." Karen is gone. We may never see the likes of a woman with such beauty, grace, and talent for a long, long time.
my 1st exposure to carpenters was sadly thru the todd haynes movie. hard to forget the images/themes when her beautiful voice pipes up now, it's a struggle!
You can hear every single word. Karen was pure class. With Richard's lush arrangements they so entertained us and we miss Karen very much...

Love this song and I miss Karen Carpenter everyday, what a voice ! She will never be forgotten.

that's an interesting tidbit you gave there in the description section about the background of this song.

Tony also did a great job on Please Mr. Postman

The solo is demonstration that their music is not just elevator music. If you don't like the guitar solo go and listen to Kenny G.

Mjollnir1234, ya had to be there. this solo was epic when it came out. unheard of. shocking even.

Buy far the best band and voice of all time!!!

Not even my own death will be as tragic for me as these

HuntingForHumans 8 months ago

When Karen Carpenter sings this song with this arrangement, it reaches in and tears your heart out - it is brilliant -ne of their best!

The guitar solo was Richard's idea. He told the soloist to really "burn".
