It would be pretty simple to take this one step further and make the landscape a 3D PC which you could interact with directly with your hands and not even need any glasses.

i thought of a cool game a few years ago (why I started to program) and augmented reality would be perfect for it.

Inserting real time geographic data, including real imagery like in Google Earth, could enable you to zoom in as far as you wanted and see what the pilot sees and allow commanders to make informed decisions. You could go as far as giving every troop this info and they could make even faster decisions.

Yep, though it will also work with a standard webcam. Look up something called ARToolKit.
