how exactly do you put it through the tape deck? is it just line out from the keyboard into the tape deck's headphone jack? could you run that through an amp after the tape deck? any info would be helpful :)
@tristicordX The audio is run from the 'line out' or 'headphone' of the keyboard into the 'line in'/'record in' of the deck. The 'line out' of the deck then goes to an amp. The deck has to be recording for audio to be heard though, or atleast record paused. I don't think this will work with all tape decks, only a separates deck like this one with a manual record level which can be cranked up to distort the inputs. This trick will also work on some mixers and soundcards too. Hope this helps!
my friends dad gave me one of these Casiotone 1000p synths, was in his basement for years.. I run it thru a pre amp to beef up the output and thru an effects pedal.. pretty cool
@scorber23 It must be nice to get given something like that. They really come to life when you put them through fz don't they? I like the programmable arp too. btw, your avatar is the best!
Ha, that makes me vintage too, I'm older than it is I think! Not a bad keyboard at all really, quite a good bit of kit to have as your first keyboard. Glad I brought back some good memories, cheers.
I just cranked up the input on the tape deck all the way so that it went way into the red (it doesn't have auto record levelling) to create an analog distortion sound. You can do this with a mixer too. Sounds warmer on playback from the tape. I don't have a VL-1 though I'm keeping my eyes peeled for one. I do have a PT-30 though which is a cool bit of kit. Must use that in one of my vids.
Thanks man. Only just finished typing the info because I lost it by accident the first time. I'm a sucker for a cheap keyboard, I have too many really. Making these vid could keep me busy for a while.
I really shouldn't keep coming back to listen to this; i end up huming that tune for ages afterwords! Still, great sound.

@svernond Thanks very much. I've started working with a live band recently so hopefully it'll get turned into a proper song at some point.

can you explain the tape deck part? what can you do with a casio vl-1? I assume you have one, no?

Great idea Chris!! The overdrive distortion sounds wicked.

Thanks man. I'm always looking for interesting ways to mangle sound. Who needs distortion pedals eh?

this thing has a really heavy sound!

It sure does, but all the grittiness is thanks to the Akai. I wanted to use something that wasn't meant to be an effect as an effect, just for fun!

it sure was fun!

love them low ends

Yeah the 1000p has a silly ammount of bass. Much more than its tiny little speaker can deal with.

Now that's lo-fi :)
