I saw COF in '99 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC. It was the first time that I've seen them, so it was a big treat since they didn't pay the U.S. often. Great show, but was bummed that Nick Barker & Robin Graves weren't there. They were out of the band shortly before that tour. They were the ONLY reason why I went to see them.

Cruelty and the Beast was, imo, the last of their great efforts, excelling in feeling, atmosphere and overall musicality, not to mention Dani's vocal range. The rest was just ok.. but even today, I would listen to some of the 94-98 songs and feel exactly the same chills I did back then. Amazing.

Principle felt like a black metal record in 1994 to me, but not so much now. they certainly had more black metal influences in the 90's than in the last decade or so.

anyway, Stuart was their best guitarist by far. when he left, the music went downhill to me.

I don't consider anything after Cruelty and the beast to be black metal anymore. My favorite albums are "from the cradle to enslave" and "dusk and her embrace". This is a solid effort, different style more fantastical and theatrical. I ultimately like it, but every album after this is just not up to par. Much more mainstream.

@Filthonic What I meant when I said the same sort of music is they used to be and still are extreme metal. Obviously over the years they have changed and grown and most of their albums in my opinion all have their own distinctive sound but none that I would call (or members of cradle themselves) would call black metal. Darkthrone, Mayhem, Burzum, Bathory and Emperor, these are all black metal. Cradle have more in common with the likes of saxon and iron maiden than the other bands listed.
