That's right, they were sent to the future (in both the anime and manga) to find peace and happiness. The reason they were revived to defeat the same evil was because the seal (that encased Queen Metalia) was broken. In the anime it doesn't really explain how this happened, but in the manga, the reason why the seal wasn't complete was because of Queen Serenity's grief over the ruin of Earth, the Moon, and the death of her daughter. Her heart wasn't in it; so the seal wasn't closed completely.
