That line is brilliant, and the filming is utterly breathtaking and atmospheric! :D all the more astonishing that it's not a line from the novel yet it's perfect.
A sad and beautiful scene with a perfect score to go with it. BTW, I notice that the director for N&S was the same director for Downton Abbey season one and the Christmas special. Go Brian Percival!
@MahaUnissa28 You might like Daniel Deronda or Little Dorrit. I know you said you've seen all the Austen movies but if you haven't seen the 2009 version of Emma I highly recommend it.
I was watching this movie the other night, and when I saw that scene, I got goosebumps. A lot. It send chills running down my spine. I was so in love with that scene. Man, I was starting to think I was crazy! Whoo!
my favourite quote ever. But it's hard to explain to anyone who never watched N&S.
"She talks about a cotton factory... and in that's the industrial revolution time and the working conditions were terrible and the cotton was in the air and it was dangerous for the workers... you know what? just forget it." LOL
This is one of my favourite scenes! It gives me chills everytime I watch it... the slow buildup of the music, the pretty white cotton floating around, and then Richard Armitage's beautiful profile appearing right at the climax of the music. Perfect!
Everything about this scene is executed perfectly. From Margaret's narration, to the cinematography, to the music and of course to finally, John Thornton's epic entrance as the "devil."
My favorite scene, right after the ending when they are kissing.. Every time i watch this series (and i watch it quite a lot :D) i wonder how Margaret was able to refuse his proposal.
This scene is my favorite in the whole film. Margaret's voice-over description of hell, coupled with Mr. Thornton walking purposefully through it, has such an emotional and visual weight. It takes my breath away. Every time.
The brilliant point that the scene makes is not just that Thornton is a devil - "the Lord of Darkness", but that the devil was once a bright angel - "Lucifer" - who doesn't just 'rule' hell, he is also its prime inmate or prisoner: Thornton - the Victorian industrialist - is as much a prisoner of the murderous capitalist system as the workers. (Except with more money, of course.)
thanks for sharing it. this scene was one of my favourites from north and south. how noble Thornton looks as he walks by and how touching are the words of Margaret. i've watched this particular scene so many times by now , but it never seem to loses its charm.
John Thornton is one of the most (if not the most) perfect man ever thinking by an author ! He is half caring and stubborn, he has soft feelings but a strong will ...
But I should tell Mr Edward Rochester remains my most beloved one ^^
Anyway this part of the movie is among my favorites ! Thank you for sharing :)
When Thorton emerged as the "devil," it blew me away. I just love how much this story shows that as individuals, we decide who the villains and heroes are in this world.
This scene brought me to tears on first watching. It is a defining moment for the whole series - it foreshadows the gravity that the Mill and Thornton will be having in Margaret's life... and the music is a killer. Thanks for posting it!
I love this movie and this scene especially! It's so powerful the way she says hell is snow white, and then Thornton strides into view, the unspoken "devil" in the scenario. The way the music rises just at this point is perfect too. Really great! <3
Richard Armitage beats all other British period male actors, every last one of them. I cannot think of anyone else as perfect as him - tall, dark, handsome, and the sexy deep voice! I've probably watched every period movie there is to watch and the only other guy who comes close (but not close enough) is Timothy Dalton as Mr Rochester in an earlier Jane Eyre.
I really adore this series, all scenes are very good with so many best scenes, and yet this one in particular is my favorite. It's so powerful it always gets me.
I love this movie and I love this scene in particular. I'm really beginning to think that John Thornton is my favorite male hero. I feel like he is so real and human. Thank you so much for putting this up!
konecne Sever a Juh v slovneskej produkcii!!! HURA :))) . konecne niekto kto pozna tento film!!! :DDDDD tesiim :) este by nam ho mohli sprostredkovat na dvd tak ako Vives and Daughters a bolo by to dokonale :)
@thheodore Wives and Daughters vyšli pred v lacných DVD v Čechách, dajú sa tam zohnať. Rovnako ako Jane Eyre 2006 alebo spomínaný North&South. Je fajn to sledovať, či nevydajú nejaký zaujímavý historický film do našej filmotéky:)
That was my brother. Made a Youtube account just so I can comment on this video and thank you for posting this incredible scene. Most perfect drama series/man/music/scene. God bless you!
MY sister loves this scene and music and i do not know if i want to agree with her. I wonder why girls love this ......its white its snow white AHHHH KYAAA
I wish I could tell you Edith; how lonely I am, how cold and harsh it is here. Everywhere there is conflict and unkindness. I think God has forsaken this place. I believe I've seen hell, and it's white, it's snowwhite.
This scene haunts me; the bleakness of it. The cotton shreds flying in the air giveth such hellish sense. And, one is left to wonder how to consider Mr. Thornton's entry towards the end. I see it as a good omen for Margaret that there is an angel in the form of Mr. Thornton's love in this uniquely depressing town.
this scene is so beautiful and touching, the music and her voice and the cotton (and richard of course :D), everything just suits perfectly, and i loove these series, the most romantic thing i've seen for a long time
This scene is amazing i 100% agree with you i love how it is filmed and the music and richard and everything about it. It is definetly the best period drama ever !!!!
A beautiful scene from an incredible adaptation. The cast, costumes, soundtrack, sets....all perfectly done. I think Richard Armitage was made for the part. The intensity of the relationship between Thornton and Margaret makes my heart ache in all the right ways!
Siempre me emociona !!!!! Gracias por subirlo!!!!
this scene is absolutely beautiful and breathtaking!! the swell of the music comes in perfectly with the thornton's entrance and oh the cotton being shown as snow and... its just brilliant camera work and direction! BRAVO!
This is probably my favourite scene (well, maybe after the ending!) The combination of the words, the surging music, the eerie beauty of the cotton floating in the air and Mr Thornton's imperious profile - magic.
There's a certain kind of nostalgia that filmmakers add to modern adaptations of classic drama/romances, like this or Austen films and such. In some, they come off as pretty cheesy, but if done right they're memorable and powerful. I think this scene is of the latter quality; it captures Margaret's despair at being in such a distant, unfamiliar place. The representation of Thornton as the "devil" figure in her personal hell is true to the storyline but also undeniably sexy.
goosebumps. i love this music, it's amazing. i love that this movie isn't just the typical period romance, it actually shows the suffering of every day people during that time
I can't get it out of my mind either! It's so beautiful and eerie. It send shivers down my spine and leves me with goosebumps.. I've memorised the quote and even quoted it to my sister who just looked at me strangely as if I were out of my mind . ;) Best scene I have ever seen!!
By the way, I have seen and loved Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre and this by the BBC, does anyone know what else I would enjoy based on my preferences?
The Persuasion movie starring Amanda Root which came out about 1995 I think. I actually think it is Jane Austen's best story and this film version is perfect.
I would also recommend Middlemarch to everyone out there! It is my favourite book and the BBC series with Rufus Sewell is excellent (there are downloads on Youtube worth catching)
It's such a fascinating scene, isn't it? The contrast between Margaret's perception and the hypnotic beauty of the deadly dancing fluff, the concentration of the workers applying just the right amount of tension to the threads, and John Thornton, dark profile cutting through the fluffy whiteness, maybe ominous, definitely masterful, moving with purpose, carried by the swell of the gorgeous N&S music... Sigh... Dreamy, disturbingly beautiful image (scene) I can't get out of my mind. Great choice!
i absolutely love this movie. And i love mr. Thornton...I just saw the movie about a week ago and i cant wait to read the novel. I love the how the movie is not just your typical love story, but a realistic depiction of life at that time.

I've seen this movie on DVD this evening (series was reccommended by a friend) and this is also my favourite scene and I'm happy that somebody uploaded it! Thornton crossing his mill with all the white cotton fluff in the air and the blue filter fitting perfectly to this powerful scene... Yes, the actor was indeed very handsome (same for Margaret) I've got to check out more films with him....
Did you know there is an autor named Margaret Thornton? :D
I love the moment just before Richard enters, the camera goes one way with nothing in focus than he enters and the camera follows him with the music. It's a perfect 10 second, that blows you away somehow. They did a shot similar at the beginning of episode 4, with Higgins leaves the factory, but it doesn't work as well has here. It's one of my favorite shot of all time. This 10 seconds.
This is my fave scene too! I will always remember this scene! It was so enthralling and so memorable with Daniela's words and Richard's walk through the mill! It was heartbreaking and yet beautifully stunning!
The first time I saw this scene and heard that line, I knew I would love this film. Visually stunning and the acting is amazing. Thank you so much for posting.
This is my FAVORITE scene in N&S, I mean bedsides the train lol, but I don't know why I find it so beautiful.. it honestly gave me goosebumps the first time I saw it and I also think it's the first time in the series that we hear the strong and powerful theme, and ofcourse, all of this happens while Richard Armitage is walking in his beautiful way across white fluff while she describes it as white hell so .. yeah I really like it lol thnx for posting!!
thanks, it´s my favourite part too and I had goose bumps too :D. It is such a wonderful and impressing scene! + R.A. ... :D no.. not just because of him of course. :)
The music, mood on the end of the film, fluff - ´white hell´
It's like a scene from a Wong Kar-wai movie. Gives me the chills every time I watch it.

thanks, it´s my favourite part too and I had goose bumps too :D. It is such a wonderful and impressing scene! + R.A. ... :D no.. not just because of him of course. :)
The music, mood on the end of the film, fluff - ´white hell´
