Yes it was. When LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 he said, and this is fact, that by signing this legislation he was giving Republicans the South for at least a generation. After this became law, Nixon and his scoundrel cronies developed what they called their Southern Strategy, playing the race card to cut white southerns from the Democratic Party. Republicans have consistently used single issues to get people to cut their own economic throats but it's not working as well as it once did.
Interesting how polarized the USA has become... 1989, a country song repping Rosevelt - arguably the most progressive, liberal president in our nations history - now days the majority of country music, listening folks our madly against progressivism and liberalism, albeit The Dixie Chicks.
@its1986davidbowie if you knew anything about the history of the democratic party in the south that wouldnt surprise you in the slightest. it has nothing to do with the nation being more polarized now than in 1989

Southern Democrats are the REAL southerners. Republicans are unconstitutional occupiers of the south and the destroyers of sovereignty.

@secfootballfan94 The south used to be heavily democrat. This stretches back to pre-civil war. The term is "Dixie-Crat"
