Cool to hear this...They did a great job refining this, because this isn't as good as the final version on Moving Pictures. Alex did a lot of refinement with the solo, here it isn't yet perfected, the version on MP is an all-time classic
Damn, I've been to the Allentown Fairgrounds for some concerts. Unfortunately, I was in Louisiana in 1980. Oh well, I managed to see them quite a few times after that. Kind of neat, hearing something that hasn't been released on an album yet.
I don't like this guitar solo as much. Alex Lifeson solos in a penatonic scale and it gives it bluesier feel that I think takes away from the emotion of the song.
yeh, the studio solo is more spacious, less frantic and fits the rest of the album better. alex is good at using space, fewer notes and feeling when it fits the song.
I like this version better. I saw them at Radio City Music Hall for the Grace Under Pressure album, First of 5 nights. they did Red Sector A, Distant early and Kid Gloves. Kid gloves was fucking amazing.
Check out the Tom Sawyer vid from this same show. I said it there: if I'm in the audience while they're performing this brand new song... I am thinking this not only the best rush song I have ever heard- it's the best SONG I have ever heard! - really just amazing stuff!
solo was good but its not as "out there" as i think the studio solo is, its actually a wonderful change up from hearing the other solo especially after me hearing it live... they started with this song and it was fucking amazing
Ahh...back in the good old days (I suppose the band wouldn't agree that they were good) when songs got written on the road during the prior tour and we got a new album pretty much every year!
Really very cool stuff, I must say. I was never one to seek out bootlegs and whatnot, but I may now. Feel free to post others if you have em, or maybe... where can I find more?
You can join the Rush Hub. They basically have every boot in existence. The Digital Rush Experience is a Great database of all the bootlegs out there.
There's a few songs they were able to play live before they hit the studio. Xanadu, Red Sector A, and Tom Sawyer are some of them.
Xanadu was much too fast, and the guitar solos in quite a few of the songs were quite... umm... Balls to the wall.
I think it's amazing how they can completely alter the mood of a song once they're in the studio. Heh. If I write something, and it evolves into something slightly different, it only gets that much closer to being crap.
Yeah, I have all of them, but I think most major Rush fans would have them so I didn't post them, while these would still appeal to other casual fans as well. lol about the Terry Brown!
Some Rush fans just don't know where to get this kind of stuff. It took me forever to get some Pre-Neil stuff, like that Radio concert from 8-26-74. If you aren't in the "know" it doesn't matter how much of a fan you are, you will not be able to get it.
Going to see them tonight I'm CT

Man I love the studio solo on this song. Glad Alex did it that way instead of the mostly jerking off he did in this version
obbus 2 years ago
Thank god they dropped the synth accompaniment to in the intro.
Cool find!
biped19 2 years ago
@biped19 there is still some there in the Moving Pictures version, but it's more subtle.

Not a huge difference really. Neil's drums are busier at times, but it's about 95% the same.

Makes you wonder which hotel they wrote this one. I guess they had enough to bang it out live a few times.

I agree with all the comments about the solo but, the intro guitar effect had a wetter feel to it, i preferred it.

the guy can send me off to heaven with
his note-bends and emotonial playing.
He's great and brings in emotion to Rush's music.
You always hear the audience respond to his live solo on this one... brilliant playing.
Glad he changed this one.
