I am a died in the wool, hard head who dat...cut me and I bleed gumbo kind of music nut...anyway..as much as I love all of Dave's work in New Orleans and have had the priviledge of seeing him perform many times here ...check out T-Bone Walkers Imperial recordings from the early 50s. Dave did all of it and he is all over it. Both of these legends were in peak form. Hearing Dave and his arrangements recorded in close to state of the art studios really allows you to hear some truly brilliant stuff.
@hassledguy Very little editing and splicing done back then. Just retakes and they worked there asses off to get it right. Overdubs were about it and they pretty much had to be done in full takes also. Now a days, I don't know what to believe...whether I'm seeing it or hearing it.....I get more and more doubtful!
@lawschoolpro You're welcome. Dave really was instrumental in picking up where Roosevelt Sykes left off and trust me, as I've been commenting on "influences" this morning, Rosy may have been the main man at the top of this musical family tree here in New Orleans.
yah i used to love me some dave, had forgotten about it for awhile, but watched treme on hbo, and they referenced it,and I instantly remembered all this great music. When i came back home to visit my house, iHad to stop and see the damage done to Fats' place on Tupelo. Man some good music came from out of there.
@lawschoolpro You know, I think we all drove by Fat's house after Katrina. Didn't before. None of us "natives" cared much about our brass bands. We do now. There is something to be said about Katrina that we have not said and I have a blog and I'm feelin' inspired. If I could just overcome my laziness, I'd make my point.
Christmas Eve, 2011. He's havin' fun at 91. Happy Birthday, Dave. And I hope that you have a Merry Christmas.

Awesome music. Dave Bartholomew should be held in the same reverance as Duke Ellington!
