What a pain YouTube is... I used your guides about two years ago to build my LPG stove for my shack up in Wedge Island in Western Australia - absolutely fantastic using your vids. I now want to build a Smoker using the good old propane bottles again ... & wanted to revisit your instructionals!! But I couldn't find you at all on my iPad search of YouTube. Whew!! now I found via desktop - my "Metal Work" teacher. Your stuff is fantastic and so are your teachings. Keep it up mate. Good stuff!!
@2Bibleppl Hi, I know mos fabricators tack with out a mask, when I started work the instant darkening mask was'nt around, it's not recommended, use a a mask , thanks for comment, dave.
Very nice craftsmanship Dave. You are an artist. Question on the water jackets: are they mild steel also? and if so do you have problems with rust in the hot water?
@DaveAI Ah, ok. Boiler water. Of course. I was thinking potable hot water. I make stoves also, and add water heating coils to some of them for heating the potable hot water tank. Those have to be stainless steel or they'll rust pretty quickly. I use 304 stainless tube or salvaged boiler tubing. Thermosiphon setup usually for circulating the water to a regular hot water tank by convection, no pumps. Lots of off the grid homes use that here in winter heating season. Thanks for the reply.
genius Dave the simplicity is divine. I've been thinking of doing something with an old gas bottle but didnt know how to empty it. Could you tell me what the sockets or studs are that you weld onto the back boiler and how do you connect them to copper pipes?
Talk about Craftsmanship!! This video really shows your creativity, also. I hope you have a long waiting list of folks that want to buy one of your Stoves! RL
a wood burning or gas stove with hot water what more does a guy need this is great you have good craftmanshipe if you lived close to me i would buy one from you 5 stars
@chox2001 Hi chox2001, you need 2 sockets at the top of the jacket, one is the inlet from the header tank, the other is the expansion pipe going back and looping over the header tank, when water gets hot it's expands this pipe releaves the pressure, the other 2 are inlet bottom & outlet, top, as long as you've got a vent pipe going back to the header tank it will be ok, but ask a pumber if you are not shure, thanks dave.
I like your unique functional stoves, the only thing I saw missing from any of them for maximum functionallity is the removable pot and pan plate. You know the plate on the top you remove when you are going to put a cooking pan or pot on so as the flames heat the cookware directly.
Onther then that I think they are awsome, I would enjoy BBQ'ing in the house and getting warm at the same time.
Absolutely brilliant, I imagined that skills like this had been lost in this country. When the time comes that nationally gridded fuels become restricted or rationed, We will all have to feed our families using such devices. I hope we are prepared for the fuel wars to come. With guys like this around we might just get by!!
@welding6013 HI, I paint first with bbq black paint, then I mace a fire in the stove, this will bur off some of the paint, then I brush on grafite grate polish, you can get this from most hardware stores, this also burns off , so you need to polish every now and then, thanks dave.
Nice work Dave!! Thanks for the ideas!!!.Is there a way to make a square box burning stove and how thick of steel do I need to make a Box wood burning stove???I have a welder and Hammer..Darrell
Hi darrell, yes it's up to you what size you make, 3 to 5mm is ok, have the plates cut to size, but shop around for the best price, make the jacket to fit on the back, keep it simple, thanks dave.
hi dave enjoyed your videos m8 very nice work am of to get mi burning gear out got mi self a old gas bottle love the water jacket idea! dave what paint do you use where do you buy it and what is the polish stuf cant find any local thanks dave
Hi , the top plates on all the stoves are 5mm thick, but if you weld stiffeners on the bottom 3mm would do, but it's better if you use thicker plate. thanks dave.
Great set of videos! I would love to have a workshop like yours, unfortunately I work out of a garden shed so my projects are a biy smaller. I am making a smaller version of a stove, from a 17kg bottle. Its almost finished it just needs the flue conector on the top. Do you not need a baffle inside to direct the heat slightly away from the chimney?
Hi rohojamagic, yes you could put a baffle in the stove , the flue from the stove I use in the work shop gets really hot, I place a fan behind it to circulate warm air, I try to get the most from the stove, it's your choice, thanks dave.
Hi anthonyuk, yes the bottle needs to be empty, only then the top unscrewed, then filled with water and left for a few days, lie the bottle on the ground let some water out and start to cut the shape you want, all this will need to be done out side away from any buildings,if after cutting a hole in the bottle you can still smell gas, make a fire in the bottle this should clear the smell, thanks dave.
Hi terranno, I cut 4 half moon shape plates, these are welded level with each other around the inside just above the ash pan, so now I have a circle with a square aperture, I then weld bars across the square aperture, approx 13mm gaps, I think it's in the video, thanks dave.
Hi jstatrck, I've got a supply from an feed tank to the jacket, one inlet and one outlet to rads, and a return to the feed tank, the end of this is looped over, if I don't turn the pump on, when the water gets hot I can hear the water go up this pipe, it will still circulate but slowly, I refill with a bucket full of water once a year, as long as the waters got room to expand it's ok, mine works fine, the expansion go's back into the feed tank, I only lose through evaporation, thanks dave.
G'day David, Rod! This End Of The Paddock!! Bloody Top Presentation... I've watched all 5 of your Clips and Thanks ever so much for doing them... You have helped out so many people who want an affordable Shed heater and hot Plate! well done! for taking the time to put it all together.. for us all.. Thanks once again mate!.. Rod
I used to do blacksmith work. It's a lot of fun if you can take the heat.

When tacking the backing plate you first used your hand to stabilise it then you used the wooden hammer shaft, any reason for the change.

Hi,Im using the the hammer shaft to push the plate again'nt the stove body, it was a bit twisted, thanks dave.

So the open loop system does not require an expansion tank. Do you loose much water this way
