Any Government can claim a huge metro area round its big city and claim it is enormous. NYC is NOT anywhere near as big as Tokyo and is only marginally bigger than London. Remember the Census Bureau claims it has a metro over 30,000 sq kms. With similar size metro Tokyo is up to 40,000,000. Tokyo is nearly twice as big as NYC.
ye this metro area is very complicated, some cities have 10 milion in a an area and 20 in others,. london has 7,5 milion in an area , and 15 milion in other, but they should need to show the area. sao paulo has 11 milion, but the metro area can vary from 18 to 23 milion.
What about Moscow. Unlike the other major cities in the world it has plenty and i mean plennty of room to keep growing outward. It can probably grow bigger than the United Kindom.

I live in Amsterdam, and I consider the city as small.. My school is in a neighbouring city called Amstelveen.. And I live in the downtown of Amsterdam.. With a tram, it only costs me 45 mins to go to my school..
±20 mins waiting for tram.. And 5 mins to walk to my school/house to the station... The rest 20 mins is the time I spend in my tram.. And the tram's speed is only approx. 50-100 km/h I think..
Also, in regard to size, Amsterdam does not have one of the biggest populations in the world..
But it surely is CROWDED.. Since the city is petit and it's the capital of the country and so many people live here.. That's the reasons why the houses are small XD I actually like it this way :):)

So glad I live in Canada, small population although it is growing a bit, very good solid economy, freedom to move around, clean cities for the most part, very pretty countryside, moderate climate with all four seasons. The people on the other hand... hehe, just kidding. LOL To be honest though, if you like where you live, no reason to trash somebody else's little slice of heaven on earth. Every country in the world has a nice patch of ground somewhere. Wow, that sounds almost poetic. Peace.

The bigest city in this planet is Mexico City and the Metropolitan Area. We have about 23 million of people living together. It is just a little less people than whole population of Canada (33 millions).

What area are you including in NY's metro area? The US CSA or MSA? Somewhere the size of Scotland?
Comparing similar areas NY is in fact not all that spectacularly big. It is marginally bigger than London which if CSAed and give a metro of 20,000 sq. kms as the bureau gives NY would have 18,500,000.

In fairness it is no more ridiculous than the US Census Bureau deciding that NY's Metro area includes many thousands of sq. kms of relatively thinly populated land beyond the real metro area and having those figures quoted as truth.

Besides, of the major cities in America, Atlanta has the smallest % of which the hub city represents of the entire metro population. The city only has 500,000+ but the metro is over 5+ million. The metro area as a whole has the most educated and affluent black community in the USA, along with DC- Northern Virginia Metro

I live in Amsterdam, and I consider the city as small.. My school is in a neighbouring city called Amstelveen.. And I live in the downtown of Amsterdam.. With a tram, it only costs me 45 mins to go to my school..
±20 mins waiting for tram.. And 5 mins to walk to my school/house to the station... The rest 20 mins is the time I spend in my tram.. And the tram's speed is only approx. 50-100 km/h I think..

Also, in regard to size, Amsterdam does not have one of the biggest populations in the world..
But it surely is CROWDED.. Since the city is petit and it's the capital of the country and so many people live here.. That's the reasons why the houses are small XD I actually like it this way :):)

and tokyo 's GDP (nominal) is more than 1.5 trillion.
now Yen is more expensive so about 1.8 trillion. of course bigger than New york metrolitan's GDP and almost same to italy's GDP
