  • 5.2s are better in my opinion. 5.9s have too much torque and tire spin off the start... a 5.2 with the 3.92 gears is ideal. (it'll beat the 5.9)

  • @Xerolinder R/T package only ever came with the 5.9L, but it came in a Reg Cab/Short Box or a Club Cab/Short Box.

Anyhow I think it is funny everyone giving you shit for putting a R/T decal on there, I mean you obviously have the right with all that extra HP. What kinda HP did you end up with and what are your 1/4mi times?

  • I got 25 MPGs on a 03 Chevy 2500HD with a 454. went to Lebanon, Mount Juliet, Watertown, Back to Mount Juliet, back to lebanon back to watertown and then fianlly back to Mount Juliet Again and still had over 1/2 of tank.. i got about the same in a Dodge Dakota 318 and that was laying on the Gas.. no mods what so ever]

  • I cant believe you got 25 mpg in a 318 dakota, I can barley get 20 mpg if I go 55. I average 14 in mixed driving.

  • @cumminspower2256 No, I double checked and my truck tells you what mileage your getting real time. If I'm going down the highway and take my foot off the gas, the number goes up, if I do the opposite it goes down. If I go full throttle it will read 2 mpg. 318's get shit mileage.

  • I own a quad cab 4.7l (much better engine then the R/Ts got). The 4.7l engines came standard with aluminum heads. But deebodeez2- what do you mean, "or in a quad cab"?

  • you could get the 360 in a quad cab also, the R/T was the first dakota to have the 5.9, but when the quad cab came out it offered that engine. i had the 4.7 in mine. decent little engine.

  • yeah I know. But the 4.7l is better made and engineering than the other engines that were offered. That is why all Dodge offers now on them are the 4.7l just modified differently

  • @burganb323 thats partially true, the 4.7 was praised to get better gas mileage, which is true unless ur towing, mine got just under 12mpg pullin a loaded utility trailer, (800lbs) my dads 5.9 dakota would get 15mpg pulling the same trailer on the same stretch of road. The reason the 4.7 has taken over is mostly due to the 5.2/5.9 being dinosaur engines, btw, mine threw the the #6 rod at 44,000 miles, after having the driver side head gasket replaced, and a new transfer case, so,, 5.9= better.

  • @deebodeez2-- you are true on the MPG for the 4.7L towing on stock settings. You can buy a superchip (which isn't too expensive) and correct that problem. The 4.7l came standard from the factory with aluminum heads. The R/T dakota didn't even have that as an option. Also, the 4.7l was engineered around the time Daimler owned Chrylser,Dodge,Jeep. So the engine is most likely German engineered.

  • The engine was released around 1998-1999. Daimler bought Chrysler in 98, engine design usually takes around 3 years or so, maybe shorter if the design team pushes hard. The likeliness of German engineering in the 4.7 is extremely extremely small.

  • DAIMLER was working in cooperation with DODG well before they bought into them. POWERTECH which is who designed the 4.7L and the 96+ 4.0L JEEP engines was a cooperative effort between DODGE and DAIMLER BENZ, and the first engines came out in 96 from the partnership.

  • deebodeez2-- (finishing my point)-- You must have been running your 4.7l rough if you threw a rod at 44000. My old 01 Dak O2 Sensor went bad about 57,000 miles and my new 03 has been running strong even with 75000+ miles on it. If you do reads on truck groups that analyzed the three offered engines at the time. Most of them like the 4.7l for various factors.

  • god damn right i ran that thing, i bought it with the intent of using it like a truck, the big hype over the 4.7 turned out to be just that, 1) less power than the 5.9- 2) less torque than the 5.9- 3) and less durable.. Personally i think the 5.2 is a puke, owned a couple, solid junk, weak low ends, old motor with the same old problems, if ur 4.7 is holding up, thats great, i'm a die hard dodge boy and love to hear about reliable mopars.

  • I have a 2002 Dakota SLT. I thought they quit making the 318's and went 283's. Anyway i have 205,000 miles on it and have not even changed the sparkplugs. All I do is change the oil every 5K. Very good truck.

  • Someone correct me if im wrong but smaller liter engine needs higher RPM for turbos to work because of pressure. but a larger litre has bigger cylinders so theres more pressure at lower RPMs. if that even makes sence. lol

  • yes thats the theory, sounds like it works well and the turbos dont look too big so it shouldnt have a problem

  • It's the insides of the turbos that count. In theory, you're close, but proper turbo selection will be the final say in what engine is better matched to what turbo.

    This Dakota sounds way cool.
