Great video as usual. I think we're going to lose the Internet eventually and now is the time to find a replacement. Look for WIFI network software that allows you to build your own network of computers that share data much like the one laptop per child software was going to be before microsoft sued that organization to death for not using a microsoft operating system.
They call them "distributed networks" or "Mesh Networks". It allows computers (usually laptops) to hook up into a self healing peer to peer network that can share an internet connection as well as their own cyberspace that is hosted on the hard-drives on their collective laptops. Messages boards and email are possible, with data being passed along in many hops to the laptop that requests the data. Freenet works the same way although it uses the internet to form their network.
Freenet works well enough to provide messages boards and email in certain countries where the internet is heavily monitored and censored. It's hard to track the data or where it's going since it's passed through many nodes before it reaches the requesting computer. It's pretty cool and it reminds me of how the internet used to be before it was taken over by corporate America.
Right now Freenet would be a great way to post videos that were removed by you tube. In fact I'm considering backing up my channel on freenet.
If the internet goes down however, freenet goes down. Many peer to peer mesh networks composed of laptops connecting to each other within WIFI range could help fill the gap.
Mobile laptops could catch and deliver messages wirelessly within seconds as they drive by. I think there are villages in china that get their email delivered by bicycle.
Basically I'm saying that if they shutoff the internet or restrict it dramatically, there is an army of geeks out there who will find a way to restore communications and the moment it's needed they will spring into action. Mesh networks aren't quite ready for prime time, yet, but they soon will be. Keep an eye out for some working mesh network software. If you find it let me know. We should have it ready for when the time comes.
Now that I think of it, a simple message board database could be shared and updated with the networks we already have. A bunch of laptops connecting in ad hoc mode could do it, and mobile laptops could carry updates as people commute. It's not as fast as the internet but it's worth looking into since every laptop already has that ability. All it would take would be writing the message board software.

The bill gives the president the power to shut off the internet. they say it's now part of the vital infastructure. The only good thing I have to say about the internet bill introduced by Rockefeller is if it passes and Obama does shut down the internet. Look for WIFI network software that allows you to build your own network of computers that share data much like the one laptop per child software was going to be before microsoft sued that organization to death for not using a microsoft operating system.

They call them "distributed networks" or "Mesh Networks". It allows computers (usually laptops) to hook up into a self healing peer to peer network that can share an internet connection as well as their own cyberspace that is hosted on the hard-drives on their collective laptops. Messages boards and email are possible, with data being passed along in many hops to the laptop that requests the data. Freenet works the same way although it uses the internet to form their network.

It's hard to track the data or where it's going since it's passed through many nodes before it reaches the requesting computer. It's pretty cool and it reminds me of how the internet used to be before it was taken over by corporate America.

Right now Freenet would be a great way to post videos that were removed by you tube. In fact I'm considering backing up my channel on freenet.
If the internet goes down however, freenet goes down. Many peer to peer mesh networks composed of laptops connecting to each other within WIFI range could help fill the gap.
Mobile laptops could catch and deliver messages wirelessly within seconds as they drive by. I think there are villages in china that get their email delivered by bicycle.

Basically I'm saying that if they shutoff the internet or restrict it dramatically, there is an army of geeks out there who will find a way to restore communications and the moment it's needed they will spring into action. Mesh networks aren't quite ready for prime time, yet, but they soon will be. Keep an eye out for some working mesh network software. If you find it let me know. We should have it ready for when the time comes.

Now that I think of it, a simple message board database could be shared and updated with the networks we already have. A bunch of laptops connecting in ad hoc mode could do it, and mobile laptops could carry updates as people commute. It's not as fast as the internet but it's worth looking into since every laptop already has that ability. All it would take would be writing the message board software.

Getting the local DNS might be the problem. What I'm hoping to find is a piece of software that connects any laptop to a mesh network. Any two without help of a central server to connect and then any number of other people to join in, make web pages and read and post to message boards, all hosted on the laptops. Kind of like freenet but using the laptop's own radio to form the network. Something like that will be ideal if internet access is unavailable. I can't write the code though.
