So beautiful...but I just closed my eyes and listened. I did not watch the video, I confess. I feel only peace and beauty, no desire to critique, no desire to do anything but listen to this over and over....
However, the composition of the video could have been significantly better, IMO.
The pictures of Anna are beautiful, but, for me, the mood of the video somehow is not sufficiently compatible with the mood of the music. I prefer just to hear it without watching. :)
I also love how all who have commented are watching this. And enjoying it. I searched it tonight, not expecting to even find this aria. And there are several versions. How cool. I still play vinyl. I don't even have an ipod, ipad, etc. But I love YouTube for music. And fans like you. XOXOXOXO everybody. God Bless You!
I like this video. It is clearly an attempt to appeal to a wider, mainstream audience, i.e. a music video like rock and country artists do. Don' be such tight asses out there. The music is good. The singing is good. Anna is beautiful. Why not try to share it with a new audience?
Yes, I agree that this video is unintentionally hilarious but I love this piece of music so much (I think I would like it if Elmer Fudd sang it) and I like her voice. Really do. I go to the Met frequently and so have seen her act and sing and she is fabulous at both. Perhaps I am not a purist--I love imperfect but expressive voices. Her voice has a lot of weight, it's not brittle. It toys a bit with the music.
1Victorinus... I understand your statement, but I like both... correct, the sound-mix does not help Dvorak genious... but hey, it is YouTube. :) Cant wait to see Anna in Aix-en-Provence Summer Festival of Classical Music... right, with or without seeing her legs... it is her voice that charms me first. :) Best would be to see Anna do a DVD-box of 16 DVDs... :)
This video is shameful. Not because we are able to check out Ms Netrebko's great legs. I'm a leg man myself, and thoroughly enjoyed looking at them, but because the video ignores the gorgeous music of Dvorak in order to show us Ms Netrebko's physique. Why not make two videos? One of Ms Netrebko's physical attributes, and another one of her singing the aria on a stage with an orchestra. I would watch both and enjoy them both. Joe Carbia, Miami, Fl

The purpose of interpretation is to let it sing or let it play as if the one who is singing or playing wasn't there. Anna Netrebko approached this ideal of all interprets much closer then anyone else before her. No matter how disputable is her czech no matter how stupid the video is she is the best interpret of this song ever. I pray for people like Netrebko or Hilary Hahn. Their interpretation is: ideal. Listen to same piece with any and all others in a row. It will lead you back to this page!
LOL! this completely takes away from what the song is about. Doesn't seem at all like she's singing to the moon. Still, the colorful floaty device adds a nice touch.
@Puppyizzy I agree with you completely. People just seem to have a knee-jerk reaction that Netrebko is a brilliant singer. I think the empress has no clothes and people just don't see that she isn't all that wonderful.

Well, it's a bizarre video idea, but she does a lovely job vocally. Was some of it post-synced and dubbed in? Surely it would be hard to sing lying on one's stomach on an air mattress!
well... probably it was dubbed in afterwards, because it's an album recording and everything, but if you've seen her Traviata, you'd notice how she manages to sing (amazingly beautiful) on here back, or while lying on the floor, or while other people were carrying her in the air. She says it's something you can learn with time, but I think it's also something you eihter have or you don't
I totally agree. It may not be the best video Ever, but Opera is seriously hard to make a music video out of and they did a decent job. It makes me sick that people have no respect for hard work.
I do love the song, and I don't see what's wrong with her assuming her sensuality and beauty in a bathing suit. (I mean, for God's sake, even Maria Callas had such pictures that should have caused a much bigger ''scandal'' back then than today). Besides the whole theme of the opera Rusalka is centered around water and sea creatures, so it only makes sense that she is in the water at the moonlight. And for an opera singer, it would be quite grotesque to sing while splashing around.
@bbcowboy39 Oh yeah, the song is above reproach, as is her singing, but this seems like an excuse to get her in a bathing suit. It looks like it was conceived for a high school music appreciation assignment.
@leowyldemi - I agree, after I heard Anna I can enjoy no other soprano any more. Nobody has such fantastic voice with that marvelous tone, such incredible stage presence and magnificent musicality. She is the best of the best! Take care.
Not bad but Lucia Popp is the reigning queen when it comes to this aria - this version is a bit too thick sounding to my ears and lacks lyricism in some key places in the aria.
OK, folks, eeeeeasy. This odd set of videos ("The Woman, The Voice") was made in San Francisco. It was done for publicity purposes only, but Anna became such a hit the compilation was released to the public. For comparison, look for some of Renée Fleming's EARLY footage, when she was a tad plump...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Netrebko has people trying to elevate her status, by bashing Callas. They pose as a group of Germans, but they are really Russians!! Netrebko is no good. She is cute yes, but a junk soprano!
i really hate netrebko's singing. i think with more practice she could be better. anyways, i happen to have a version of this aria sung by netrebko and its surprisingly acceptable. not as good as popp, but for netrebko-standards, its pretty good.
I say goodbye to these pages of Anna Netrebko. I am not available right now, But I thank you for caring enough to write and reply . I am making some changes in my life. Please leave a message if so you wish it. If I do Not return your message, you are one of those changes.
I love the insults and threat to the ugly baby of Anna Netrebko...
Hammer, in my opinion you are too good. The son of Anna Netrebko deserves all your hate and vulgarity and even more...^^ I'm so excited when you start with the sexual language and you begin to bang her ass...please, more!!!!!
denigrate, insult ruthlessly against Anna Netrebko. This is done in order to demoralize, discourage and impair the performance of ANNA N., and well out of the prominent place ANNAN Now occupied and put in this place to bitch prostitute Natalie Dessay.
HAMMER55292 crazy is to use the MARIA CALLAS. He presents as a defender of Callas, and that is a lie, because who really he , It presents itself as a defender of Ma.Callas, and this is a lie because this fag Hammer55292 who really stands
defendfor is to Natalie Dessay. The MaRIA CALLAS is a pretext to attack,
@Royhorse1 Hey Roy, you fuckin fudge-packer, take the oily broom-stick out of your ass, and seek psychiatric treatment in those hospitals you talk about.
(Natalie Dessay) no one hires her to sing in concerts and also because their disks smelly, dvd nobody wants to buy because she is a horrid sound, horrible singer. So is Natalie Dessay herself or her daughter who is a prostitute, giving her ass and vagina pedophile monster TO THIS Faggot Hammer55292 for ruthlessly attack Anna Netrebko and your baby. The pretext for this fag
sell her daughter to pedophile Hammer55292 ?. This trio has made a deal. The deal is as follows: Dessayfanatic gives the ass and vagina of her daughter to the misogynist and pedophiles HAMMER55292 and pedophile fag attack , insult, denigred, blame to Anna Netrebko. This perverse and criminal treatment or Agree between Pedophile Hammer with NATALIE DESSAY is because her
NEVER do make evil against NATALIE DESSAY or Dessayfanatic ?
These evil and wicked desires can only come from this bitch prostitute, Dessayfanatic or NATALIE DESSAY. Dessayfanatic is the daughter of opera singer Natalie Dessay ?. This singer is an evil bitch who prostituted his daughter
What a stupid video for an opera singer!! Garbage, simply more garbage from Netrebko. When will the critics get rid of her completely? She is ruining oera, get her out!!!!
The pedophile monster will him be with anger spinning in his puddle of mud and shit, when him read and will know the many honors and awards than won Anna Netrebko.
@09avenger Who's the great soprano that I insulted??? La Divina of all Divinas, Maria Callas is gone, and I would NEVER insult her. There is no other GREAT SOPRANO!!!!
@hammer55292 i almost agree with that, although there are other greats, just not quite a divine... eg elisabeth schwarzkopf, and if you want someone still alive kiri te kanawa
@hammer55292 Maria Callas may be gone from this earth but her legacy lives on! this video is ridiculous! since when did the classical world stoop this low to make a music video?
@sweetaztecangel69 Are you sure it's a music video and not some stupid director's "concept"? There are plenty of productions today that look like this. BTW - I don't remember Callas ever singing in La Wally.
@jewelmarkess Im positive....if Anna cared about opera she would have said something....so its pretty obvious where her mind is..and Callas IMO sang the best interpretation of Turandot :]
@sweetaztecangel69 This is not from Turandot, this is from Rusalka by Dvorak (a typo in my post above), a role Callas has never sung in her life, so why compare? Anna does it beautifully. As to "saying something" - are you serious? These directors do what they want, singers today have very little say. Now, I don't know if it's a production or a silly video. But it could well be one of those Eurotrash productions...
@jewelmarkess I know this is Rusalka Im just saying that Maria Callas has done a better performance in many roles Anna will NEVER be able to..actually singers/artists do have input on the videos they create....they are the ones in it therefore they have the say in the direction they take
@sweetaztecangel69 Yes, Callas was great and had unsurpassed artistry, I don't argue with you on that. But Callas is dead and opera is a live experience and some of us actually like to go to opera and not to restrict ourselves to old recordings. As to this - if it's a video, maybe it'll get one person interested in opera and then it's worth it. If it is an opera production, then directors reign today at least in Europe.
@jewelmarkess she isnt dead...her legacy lives on and will continue to live on till the end of time....there isnt a opera singer thats interested me since Callas that I have loved that rich vocal quality from....it wont get any one interested in opera..it will however gain Netrebko another fan if she decides to do a dirty movie
@sweetaztecangel69 Then you are missing on the magical experience of listening to live UNAMPLIFIED voices. Not to mention experiencing a complete opera, with its combination of different voices, story, drama, instrumental music. Callas was great and I love her, but I love going to opera. While not as expressive as Callas, in the right repertory (like this opera) Netrebko is amazing.
@sweetaztecangel69 It helped get me curious about opera a few years back. I can't say that it was the only factor, but it helped. Of course, the video is corny but when I first saw this, the music struck me. And isn't that what's important?
@09avenger You're going to die a worse death, by rotting cancer, for insulting a DEAD, DEFENSELESS WOMAN, who is the greatest soprano of humanity. A soprano that when heard live at La Scala, over ten times, she was considered of MYTHOLOGY, she was so magnificent. Not good, not very good, not great, but in the sphere of inhuman sound.
rinse your ass out. I've been noticing a foul smell lately, when I bang you from behind. Try to be nice, and clean, like Maria Callas. Thank you Annushka.
Alert (open-eyed) to the legal representative or lawyer of Anna Netrebko. Leoperarm and Striker9410 have agreed to conspire against Anna Netrebko. This pair of bastards, whose mothers are cheap street whores, have been committing a series of attacks,
insults, denigrating the honor of Anna Netrebko and her son. These attacks have been directed at the person and honor of Anna and not its interpretation, professional qualities or defects.
The way is open to file Lawsuits against the Trial Court in New England and the
U.S. against this pair of ladybugs and miserable mercenaries paid to attack the women singers. Serious injury, defamation, personal attacks on a woman's honor, slander, and all kinds of insults to denigrate SINGER WOMAN WITH unspeakable ends.
Traviata - Ms. Netrebko displayed ample power, coloratura bravura with a marvelous tone Having recently heard Natalie Dessay sing Sempre Libera at the Met Gala, one was impressed by the legato nature of Netrebko's portray in contrast to Dessay's intentional staccato, fragmented phrasing interpretation. Having also seen photos of Fleming in her current Violetta at the ROH, one can only marvel at Netrebko's resilience, endurance and commitment to bel canto opera.

I see Pavarotti did a great job with bringing opera to masses. This presentation just follows his path. Some people don't like it but I don't have problem with it.

And for an opera singer, it would be quite grotesque to sing while splashing around.

lyrics part1
Silver moon upon the deep dark sky
Through the vast night pierce your rays
This sleeping world you wander by
Smiling on men's homes and ways
Oh moon ere past you glide, tell me
Tell me, oh where does my loved one bide
Tell him, oh tell him, my silver moon
Mine are the arms that shall hold him
doug13708874 1 year ago
lyrics part2
That between waking and sleeping he may
Think of the love that enfolds him
Light his path far away, light his path
Tell him, oh tell him who does for him stay
Human soul, should it dream of me, Let my memory wakened be.
Moon, moon, oh do not wane, do not wane

No you are wrong ; if we really have to use such a vocabulary, the reigning queen when it comes to this aria is called ANNA NETREBKO.
But we're in XXI century and our is not the century of King and Queens, I hope.

@ad80ad it is always the century of queens and kings, regardless of what reigning name you give them

Not bad but Lucia Popp is the reigning queen when it comes to this aria - this version is a bit too thick sounding to my ears and lacks lyricism in some key places in the aria.

@sweetaztecangel69 Are you sure it's a music video and not some stupid director's "concept"? There are plenty of productions today that look like this. BTW - I don't remember Callas ever singing in La Wally.
jewelmarkess 1 year ago
@jewelmarkess Im positive....if Anna cared about opera she would have said something....so its pretty obvious where her mind is..and Callas IMO sang the best interpretation of Turandot :]
sweetaztecangel69 1 year ago
@sweetaztecangel69 This is not from Turandot, this is from Rusalka by Dvorak (a typo in my post above), a role Callas has never sung in her life, so why compare? Anna does it beautifully. As to "saying something" - are you serious? These directors do what they want, singers today have very little say. Now, I don't know if it's a production or a silly video. But it could well be one of those Eurotrash productions...
jewelmarkess 1 year ago
@jewelmarkess I know this is Rusalka Im just saying that Maria Callas has done a better performance in many roles Anna will NEVER be able to..actually singers/artists do have input on the videos they create....they are the ones in it therefore they have the say in the direction they take
sweetaztecangel69 1 year ago
@sweetaztecangel69 Yes, Callas was great and had unsurpassed artistry, I don't argue with you on that. But Callas is dead and opera is a live experience and some of us actually like to go to opera and not to restrict ourselves to old recordings. As to this - if it's a video, maybe it'll get one person interested in opera and then it's worth it. If it is an opera production, then directors reign today at least in Europe.
jewelmarkess 1 year ago
@jewelmarkess she isnt dead...her legacy lives on and will continue to live on till the end of time....there isnt a opera singer thats interested me since Callas that I have loved that rich vocal quality from....it wont get any one interested in opera..it will however gain Netrebko another fan if she decides to do a dirty movie
sweetaztecangel69 1 year ago
@sweetaztecangel69 Then you are missing on the magical experience of listening to live UNAMPLIFIED voices. Not to mention experiencing a complete opera, with its combination of different voices, story, drama, instrumental music. Callas was great and I love her, but I love going to opera. While not as expressive as Callas, in the right repertory (like this opera) Netrebko is amazing.
jewelmarkess 1 year ago
@sweetaztecangel69 It helped get me curious about opera a few years back. I can't say that it was the only factor, but it helped. Of course, the video is corny but when I first saw this, the music struck me. And isn't that what's important?
