Guys, Im one of the biggest 80's metal fans out there. Favourite artists of mine are Paul gilbert, Yngwie malmsteen, Racer x, Ratt, Winger, Dokken, Marty friedman, Cacophony, Wasp.. e.t.c I can honestly say Savatage is one of the most Unique bands ever formed, there music has something to it that no other band has.. they cannot be defined and will always be one of my favourites. RIP cris.
I've always loved part 2 and Rob Evan's voice. I looked this up out of pure curiosity, while admittedly hearing Rob sing it first ruins this version for me, I love it all the same because what kind of TSO fan would I be if I don't give credit to Savatage?
I just had a little debate with a friend the other day. I showed her some Savatage. She's a big TSO but she just told me that Savatage was crap but I told her that you should know history of one band to appreciate the other. I mean, if it wasn't for Savatage I don't think we would have TSO. I mean it's like the Chicken and egg thing. Personally, I prefer Savatage. I just get angry sometimes when people fail to acknowledge this great band.
@Guitarmattms2010 I agree, the two songs and bands make insightful, inseparable contrasts.
One represents a world where the sole means of salvation are escape and death; the other one depicts people still grasping and searching for hope.
Renounce pain and evil or persevere doing good against all odds; you decide which world you live in. The two manifestations of the band just give you a taste of each.
@DeadMansHandFilms ,,When TSO does these songs...its always lacking one thing...Jons emotion...he delivers what supposed to be there...I am tired of TSO vocalist hacking up these great songs..
This is Jon Oliva at his finest. This man is one of the most underrated singer/songwriters in rock history. To come back and make an album this good after everything that has happened in his past is amazing. This is my favorite Savatage album with Jon singing the lead vocals. My other favorite is Edge Of Thorns. Both are masterpieces.
Unbelievable! One of the greatest bands ever! Very few bands have undergone an evolution as profound as Savatage and fewer still have been able to do so without alienating its legion of fans...
This song is wonderful, so multilayered and dynamic! I love it so much!
This could easily be one of the greatest records and stories of all time. Criss has his spirit all over it and all the rythm guitars sound like he wrote them. Incredible! Dig It!
Savatage is the one band that transcends metal. Some call them power metal, some call them progressive metal, some call them symphonic metal.
Personally I just call them one freaking amazing rock and roll band that has pure emotion and energy oozing from their music. Whether a ballad or a rip your throat out metal jam, all of their music is just timeless and unique.
From the time I accidentally discovered them on Power of the Night, i have been a HUGE fan
@phantomeagle The record company asked Paul to write a Christmas album, not Jon. Christmas Eve/Sarajevo was written in the 80's by Paul and was originally slated for a Heaven album(a band that Chris Caffery once played in). Paul wrote a great majority of the substance in TSO. Jon and Savatage definitely and obviously had and have a huge role in the project. But really if it wasn't for that song TSO might not exist. Jon helped Paul create TSO not the other way around.
Whenever I heard this song I thought when Jon sung "Like desert rain" I thought he said "Like Deseree". So when he was talking about falling in vain it also made sense. Then I looked at the lyrics and saw my mistake-whoops :D
time, standin all alone, i bled for u I wanted to, each drop my own..... ive been listening to savatage almost all my life, since i was 10 or something.. no other band is better than savatage for me...
Yeah, this is probably one of my top 3 albums from them... Streets is at #1, and then it's a pretty tough choice between Poets and Madmen or Gutter Ballet. The album just has such a strong sense of darkness and a hint of maliciousness in some of the songs... The epitome of good metal, as far as I'm concerned.
This late in the season this song is like the sun peeking throught the clouds after rain.
