I love the vigor and sense of this speech, but Reagen and Republicans fail to remember time and time again the duality that the country lived in for hundreds of years. These same men, the founders of our great country, who wrote in the Consititution that all men are to be created equal, OWNED SLAVES! Jim Crow was in practice 100 years after the passing of the Emancipation Proclamation. And Republicans honor the memory of these things without addressing how wrong some of their actions where.

Rather than apologizing for this country and the founding fathers, it is much better to understand the purpose of this country and the freedoms it has brought to more people than any other country in the world. To start with: It was Republicans, and not Democrats, who predominantly opposed slavery and, in fact, started a civil war to eliminate it.

Further, several founders like Ben Franklin were definitely anti-slavery by the time the US was founded. No, they didn't carry the day.

It is Democrats who supported slavery. Never forget this fact. Robert Byrd anyone?

I do remember Reagan unfortunately I was to young to understand how awesome of a president he was and who it was I was really watching and what this president was actually saying and was about. I have recently come to realize that I slept through the 80s, and did nothing to preserve this vision of national life. Nobody but nobody has the guts to talk like this today in any public office.
