Aw, they were so cute when they were little! After watching this video a second time, the dubbing really isn't that bad. In fact it's actually quite good! The only thing the girls can't say right is Totoro's name but otherwise, I may consider buying this version. Of course, I'll still keep my DVD copy of the original FOX dub (I still prefer this version over any other dub).
Why hate on disney for dubbing a great movie? This dub was just as good as the old one and the only people saying its bad are nostalgia fags. Oh, they didn't pronounce totoro right? Who gives a FUCK. I've only seen the original 1988 english dub once ( I didn't watch for the first time until I was 13.) and I've seen this dub about a dozen times ( I bought the Disney DVD of it) and the only thing I really liked about the 1988 dub was the fact that they said the where the Cat Bus was going to instead of just simply transelating it ( I really enjoyed the dub but that was all that I really remember of it since I saw it 2 years ago), all in all I enjoy both dubs.

I think they got the adult's voices spot on; they're all so warm sounding. But I'm not sure about the kids. They have perfect voices when they say things softly and the more 'emotional' scenes, but when they're screaming and stuff...

I don't get the negative comments on this one. People don't really get the purpose of dubs. It's good to watch it in its original voicing, but the dubs make the adults follow the movie better, and it reaches a wider audience, too.
I don't think they did a horrible job. It's fun to know that actual sisters are voicing these two characters. Yes, the problem with accents is still there, but i think the energy is evident. It's not dry or bland at all.

I hate this dub because 1 the voices did not match the characters at all and 2 people should not do English voiceovers for Japanese movies unless they can pronounce the Japanese R sound correctly when stating names. Seriously, when she said "Totoro" I lost it, and when the mom said "Satsuki," I broke down because she said "Sâtzuhkee"

It's really a matter of preference, but I suggest that if you want the movie, watch it in subs and you might understand that the english dubs cant compete at all with the japanese. The emotions in the japanese is much better. Like 2:54, the dub is so lackluster... In the Japanese one, emotion doesn't sound fake at all
I'm not sure how I feel about the fanning sisters. I think I'll have to by the FX Dub DvD if I can find it. I'll rent this one just to compare. I mean, the actor playing the granny, mother, and father sounded decent enough. But May has that characteristic 'Noooooooo!' that's engraved into my head, and not to mention Satsuki always sounded so much older and more sophisticated. Like her mother.

Apparently it was originally dubbed and released by Fox, who lost the rights to it in 2004. I guess Disney had to redub it to keep it on the American market? :( Still bummed though.

My native lang is pl, but when I heard Laputa english dub it was completely awful. It's Complitly different than in scenario, so maybe it was Fox release. I see that Disney give more heart into it, and it should be good. All the Ghibli movies released in poland is with 1voice lector with original jap soundtrack and voices, and I think I rather subtitles, cause can't feel emotions. But theres some good school that I want to hear... we have some people, so really good dubbing can really be made.
the original totoro is better. pixar messed it up by remaking it. i have nothing against Dakota or elle but the older sister name is sazuki not saki. and mai sounds 8 and shes 4

@derickamundo yes. mainly for money...but also because disney didn't own the rights for the original english dub. and when they acquired the distribution rights for studio ghibli, they decided to start anew.
PERSONALLY, i liked the disney dub better because there weren't awkward japanese to english translations like in the original which made me feel i was missing something. and mei didn't distract me by sounding too much like rugrats' angelica.
@ajordan Yeah what I noticed in the Fox dub some translations were incorrect, particularly Satsuki's name. In the original dub, her name was pronounced "Sat-su-ki" and the Disney dub got it right by prouncing it the correct way, "Sat-ski." I know this because in Japanese language, for names like "Satsuki," or "Mitsuki," the u is silent.
@irisb33 It's by the same director. But this movie is from the 80s, much better, and takes place in post-war Japan. It is at the same time simpler and deeper than Ponyo. However, you should watch the original English release if you want to watch a dub. I do like Disney more than Fox generally, but Fox did a much better job with it. The Japanese version is the best of course. This is my personal favorite movie of all time.
@irisb33 Ponyo is very different. Totoro is much more calm. it's basically about how a small incident is perceived by the two girls as a very serious and big thing. Ponyo is a wonderful fairytale.

This dub's okay. I wish they kept Satsuki's old voice, but Elle's Mei's was ideal. Can't you express yourselves without whining?
And besides, it was the old dub that mispronunced "Satsuki".

the original totoro is better. pixar messed it up by remaking it. i have nothing against Dakota or elle but the older sister name is sazuki not saki. and mai sounds 8 and shes 4

I have to agree with taytay. I watched the new version earlier and was disappointed. I love these two girls in other movies but they don't match the characters here. Why on earth did they change the voices? Original english is way better

@Writtenjustice No, I don't have anything against the two. It's the whole movie. The original english dub was much better (By Fox). When Disney did this redubbing they ruined it. None of the voices match the characters. The original version was much better. The voices matched the characters a lot better. That's all I'm saying. Disney ruined my favorite childhood movie.

I don't know what your beef with these kids is, but it sounds to me like they're bringing just the right kind of energy to play little girls convincingly. They have good chemistry, and their performances are all the more sincere because of it.

You guys are the ones that are annoying and close minded. Only a true fan will have the open mind to accept all aspects of the movie. So shut up. GOD I'm so sick of weaboos. You're nothing but disrespectful immature people. These girls were great. They had every aspect of what a child is like. The original and Japanese versions were good, but this one takes the cake in my opinion. Them being so close really helped the film along. I thought this version was fantastic. Most of you are uneducated.

@derickamundo yes. mainly for money...but also because disney didn't own the rights for the original english dub. and when they acquired the distribution rights for studio ghibli, they decided to start anew.
PERSONALLY, i liked the disney dub better because there weren't awkward japanese to english translations like in the original which made me feel i was missing something. and mei didn't distract me by sounding too much like rugrats' angelica.

@ajordan Yeah what I noticed in the Fox dub some translations were incorrect, particularly Satsuki's name. In the original dub, her name was pronounced "Sat-su-ki" and the Disney dub got it right by prouncing it the correct way, "Sat-ski." I know this because in Japanese language, for names like "Satsuki," or "Mitsuki," the u is silent.

@irisb33 It's by the same director. But this movie is from the 80s, much better, and takes place in post-war Japan. It is at the same time simpler and deeper than Ponyo. However, you should watch the original English release if you want to watch a dub. I do like Disney more than Fox generally, but Fox did a much better job with it. The Japanese version is the best of course. This is my personal favorite movie of all time.
