They have a Twin Otter at the airport I fly out of. It looks like it's bound to fall apart at any moment but then you realize; oh, wait, it's an Otter :)
Canadair no longer makes the twin, but Transport Canada and FINALLY the FAA (with lips firmly attached to manufactures and airline backside) put a directive out. The CARAVAN in LIGHT ICE could (WILL) lose normal flight regimes.
If I must chose between the two, the Caravan can stay home.
seriously though, I bet you the Red Baron could shoot both these planes down with his crappy old biplane. It's pathetic. A fighter jet like an F22 is so much better than these old fashioned planes. Propellers are world war 1 technology, it's like watching the wright brothers here.
@weversonman If you knew anything about airplanes, you'd know that turboprops have much better takeoff and landing performance than jet thrust. That's why you NEVER see jet thrust planes going into short strips like these.
@edcoondog Jet propulsion could handle a short strip if it were on the right airframe. Manufacturers usually don't waste money developing a jet airplane with straight wings though because it would be too slow. Just ask Dornier (if they were still in business)
@karner ok, i'll elaborate, because yes, you can always burn a shitload of fuel and accomplish what you want with pretty much anything. so yes, you CAN have a jet thrust engine that will accomplish the same task, it will burn significantly more fuel in doing so.
I flew both these aircraft in Africa. They shouldn't be compared. The Twin Otter is THE twin engined turbine STOL Bush plane (sorry LET-410). The Caravan is pretty much THE single engined turbine utility plane. Both do a fantastic job. The Otter will carry a way bigger load into shorter/wetter/rougher/ fields. The Van will carry a pound or person farther for less money. It is not a STOL aircraft. Fit the plane to the job and you will be happy.
I might concede to some of these arguments as I understand that even in Canada, they don't want turbine twotters on BC and on VI...Most ofm y STOL has been in SASK, and NWT
@BushWomanOtter There's plenty of Twotters--float and wheeled--in BC and on VI. I know because I'm in and out of there frequently and often. Not many other planes can endure the rough, rugged and often-unforgiving mountains there...except Cessnas and Beavers.
Hard to be compare an Otter to a Caravan. Good luck taking a Caravan into a very short, rough offstrip site. They are great planes the Caravans but no match in some ways.
If you've seen a twin on real STOL offstrip, you'd never take a caravan. And forget going north in the arctic; single engine and no-ice protection, caravan won't survive.
Ummm.... you might want to try to explain that to Hagelands, Bering Air, and all of the other operators from Bethel to Barrow. Era operated Twatters and, oh yeah they lost their ass and now operate 1900's and Dash-8's in a different market. Taking nothing from the -6. It just doesn't operate in the black as easily. Sorry.
The otter had its day. But in this day and age its the Caravan that gets it done and makes money. Less fuel and its faster. And if you need better STOL call Aero Twin in Anchorage.
I'm not saying they twatters aren't great planes. But you just made my argument for me, "people drop big bucks into Otters to have them in the fleet." Legacy costs like that will eat you up. I've dealt with enough airframes that have no parts availability to understand that is not the way to stay in business unless it is just for a niche.
Getting one with low airframe hours will grab some big bucks. It will take some big bucks to purchase the new ones. I saw a guy in Ontario flip a twin over, and they put the money into it to restore it. I guess it is personal, and probably where you are located as well. Nothing like waiting 3 weeks for an engine...for a single Otter in NWT late Sept... What was I told that people are uing now with Otter engines...had a funky nickname...?
I don't think I made an argument for you. I know of several salvage operations now, and they will be worth it. I can come home on one engine if necessary with a twin. I doubt that anyone would sink the money into such a refurb unless it was a moneymaker.
@BushWomanOtter What do you do for a living? Where do you live? I have spent 10plus years in bush Alaska. The only operator I can think of running a twatter is ConocoPhillips Shared Services on the North Slope. We operate two Gooses. They have one market in the whole state where they can make money-the Aluetian Chain. They, like the twatter don't make sense for 99% of the markets. Twatters are cool-But give me Caravans and I'll be buying you out in short order.
Air Operations in Northern Saskatchewan, NWT, and Manitoba. 17,000 hours on my husband's log book, my right seat time is signifiantly less as I am a fewyears youngr than he is. "Twatter" might notbe good for you, but your extremes are different than ours. Ae you from Indiana, PA by chance?

If a Twin Otter more efficient, why did FedEx choose to build it's fleet with Caravans?

Good luck taking the Caravan into serious off-strip sites. Be calling in a twin Otter after that to haul out the wreckage.

I think the otter got off quicker, but the C is no slouch. Nice video.

Lol damn... Never knew a C208 could be that loud... and when the twin otter took off it was like a sandstorm! So much dust comes from tons of power!
