This is amazing, because every time I've looked at Mke Oldfield. in the past, I feel I want to cry. There is a deep loneliness there that I recognise. How amazing that he coped with things so well. Perhaps his mum had similar health problems. Hope they both have had some quality of life. So many musicians have hard lives. Can't wait to read his book.
Mike, I love you so much, you are an amazing human being, so talented and humble, an angel, and you are so right when you say that you were meant to be different. I love your music, it's genius. Blessings to you.
We just are what we are and its those around us who fear us and judge us even when we are respectfully different. I'm not surprised that he seeks hideaways. Everything is relative because he has interracted with more people than most of us, so of course he has to get away from it all at times. Then the media tells him he's weird because that fits the perverted journalistic modus operandi and people around him repeat what they've read...Sheesh!
My God has anyone ever suggested to Mike Oldfield that he might have ADD/ADHD? As an adult diagnosed only after my child was, I can recall always feeling like an "outsider". Many ppl undiagnosed with ADD suffer from depression, panic attacks and isolation brought about by simply processing information differently. Most ppl with ADD also have IQs of genius or better -- he certainly fits the pattern. He might feel a lot more comfortable & at home in his own skin if someone evaluated him for it.
I try and steer clear of Mike Oldfield interviews, because - despite saying he's passed his depressions - he just sounds so morbid when he talks. He looks nervous and awkward in his interviews - perhaps he only gets release through his music.
Mike is the Beethoven of our time. His music will live for a long while. His later stuff, such as Amarok are genius as well, not just the early stuff.
I wonder if he ever realised that the reason he used to feel as an outsider is that he walked up front all the time. I'd say he's a brave man as opposed to 'different'
It's included on the "Elements: Best of Mike Oldfield" DVD, though it's only part 1. I think the DVD is out of print, but I got a copy through Amazon sellers.
Bill Turnbull is so conditioned it's unbelievable. BBC news doesn't care , its so unbiased ..... only the viewers ratings matter.... not really the subject....you can hear it in the way they try to patronise Mike.... And Tubular Bells is not his best Album by the way..... Try Listening to 'Ommadawn' if you really appreciate good music.
There should be more 'Odd ones out' in this country... in fact there probably are.... Every one is expected to fit in with the so- called norm. people are more and more conditioned into the UK 'designer personality' society... and penalized for being different. If you don't like football or stupid pop crap like 'take that' you are weird.... and remember most people cannot achieve what Mike O has simply because there's not much demand for him any more.
I couldn't thank you enough for posting this! I never get to watch telly in the morning as I leave for work early... I'd be gutted if I missed that. Mike's rare TV appearance!
It's a genius thing. That 'child on the sidelines' bit is a reference to autism I believe. As horrible as it sounds, if it wasn't for this condition there'd be no Tubular Bells or other fine albums. Genius.

He speaks like a bank manager.
Proof positive that the most brilliant and gifted individuals on this planet are often those with the smallest mouths and softest voices.

Has he ever had a stroke? One side of his face does not seem to work. Oh well, at least it has not stopped him making wonderful music.

I dont think you can't select depression, it selects you. Oldfield is a musical genius, nothing less.

Mike Oldfield is so down-to-earth, so calm and at the same time fully loaded with energy.
I don't know another famous person in the instrumental music biz who is able to express emotions so good, as it Oldfield does!
